Amish response to covid

robdot says...

New research from West Virginia University sociologists suggests this face-to-face interaction, coupled with a distrust in preventative medicine, led to “excess deaths” among the Amish population in 2020.

The death rate for that year soared above the baseline average from 2015 to 2019, with the largest spike – 125% - occurring in November..

I just wanted to say thanks for the updates. I hope you don't forget that there are plenty of people out here - online and off - whose lives you make better in small ways whether or not you know it, and we care about you for one reason or another.

i.e. as I'd say any of my friends face-to-face, get well soon you old bastard, we're counting on you.

I got the MRI, which changed things for the worse. I had a large tumor which they determined to be cancer. I also had to get a CT to see if it had spread to the lungs and it showed some small nodules in my lower right lung. They can't be sure it is cancer or not yet. If they shrink during the treatment, then it is cancer.

The treatment I am undergoing is called Immunotherapy, a targeted drug which adheres to the chemical that cancers put out to trick the body into thinking they are normal tissue. Once it binds, the body sees it as foreign tissue and tries to kill it.

Obviously, all the other issues have taken a back seat. If the treatment works, I could live for some time. If it doesn't, I am looking at an estimated 4-6 mos.

I don't know when or if I will be mentally recovered enough to start posting again. No matter what, though, I appreciate all of you.

Portland's Rapid Response Team Quits Over Accountability

Mordhaus says...

In this case, I sympathize because Portland has refused to assist or back any of their police in the riots there. The DA has refused to charge anyone who resists arrest or refuses to disperse after police have been given orders to remove rioters (they are rioters. even the Mayor is now saying to stop calling them protesters and to call them anarchists instead).

Why would anyone want to go out, night after night, and face the same people you arrested the night before doing the same stuff?

The fact also exists that Portland has made massive cuts to the police budget. That has led to time off being cancelled for police, no rotations to move fresh police into the riot situations so the same ones have to deal with the face to face confrontations with no break, and the alternative policing option which was hands off was tabled. "A paramedic and a social worker would drive up offering water, a high-protein snack and, always and especially, conversation, aiming to defuse a situation that could otherwise lead to confrontation and violence. No power to arrest. No coercion."

There are a lot of problems with police, for sure. Portland's government is the driver behind these issues, though. Until they start taking a stand against these anarchist, violent protesters (who are PREDOMINANTLY white), the situation will not get better.

Kid Abuses Grocers, Dad Makes Abusive Son Apologize

Digitalfiend says...

It really makes you wonder how a kid gets like that, so angry and saying crazy shit like, "I'll cut you up with an axe." Wtf!
Clearly the dad cares enough to teach his son a lesson but still. ...and yeah I get it raging hormones and all, I'm sure I was a little angry at that age too, but I never disrespected my elders or people in authority. I see this more and more with the kids in our neighbourhood too (not all obviously) - so many seem so angry. Is it because they spend less time socialising with people face to face and/or the influence of unchecked internet access, etc. Crazy.

#MAGACHALLENGE TRUMP SUPPORTERS

newtboy says...

He stupidly admitted there was a stenographer on the phone call, so unless they destroy it, there is a word for word transcript of the entire call that's already been subpoenaed, including the missing majority of the call not included in the summary they produced.

Also we now have confirmation of the quid quo pro in the form of emails directing the ambassador to set up a face to face meeting only if the Ukrainian president agrees to publicly investigate Biden.

Also, today Rick Perry resigned and declared his intention to cooperate fully with the investigation. That does not bode well for Trump.

Sadly, since the Senate majority doesn't care about the law or country, only protecting themselves from Trump's wrath and his terroristic followers, there's not a chance he will be removed, but not a chance he won't be exposed as a treasonous traitor either.

I believe his phone call WAS perfect. Best thing he's done so far!

Last nail in the coffin so to speak.

No fight

Just two Indian (i think) video clips

No clue what this is...a political commercial?

Likely a self link, but I can't prove it.
Downvote for misleading title and tags...where's my fight?

SpaceX - BFR - Anywhere on Earth in an Hour

newtboy says...

Do you think people only travel for face to face meetings that could be done remotely? No one would waste that kind of money for nothing.

What's been missed is it's a time machine. Leaving Australia for LA, you can arrive almost a day before you left, reminding me of another hypersonic plane's slogan...."when it absolutely, positively had to be there yesterday."

anyone care to compute the carbon footprint of that capability as compared to a skype conference???

VICE covers Charlottesville. Excellent

MilkmanDan says...

@Jinx -- Whether in "meatspace" or on the internet, I think the difference is engaging with others vs being in the echo chamber.

A lot of "engaging" with others is going to be negative. Picket line meets picket line has about as much chance of being productive as reading the comments on a controversial YouTube video.

But even if the majority of the "engagement" is that, there are going to be some patient people who connect in a positive enough way to actually enlighten and persuade. Like the former-WBC lady's new husband.

And while that positive engagement seems to have the best shot at redeeming those that can be redeemed, it also might be the best way to show the true colors of those beyond redemption. The skinhead leader guy got maced by counter-protesters twice. That gives him a semi-legitimate provocation to respond in kind or with escalating violence (bloody knuckles, broken bones, whatever). But if he isn't provided with any such provocation and still resorts to violence, people can truly see his "idealogy" for what it is.

Hence Rosa Parks responding to the bus driver in Montgomery:
Driver - "If you don't stand up, I'm going to have to call the police and have you arrested."
Parks - "You may do that."

If I was there in Charlottesville in the heat of the moment, face to face with that kind of hate and bigotry, I'd have been one of the people chanting "fuck off nazis". I'd have cheered when somebody on "my side" maced chief-skinhead in the face, if I hadn't done it myself. ...But I recognize that we could sure use more people that react like Rosa Parks did, and less like I would have.

Constituent Rips Into Congressman Over Health Care

have you noticed how many congressmen are now trying to video chat their town halls now?

it is because they do not want to face americans like this face to face.

Japanese people take their calculators very seriously.

SDGundamX says...

Japan is full of these kinds of paradoxes. It's like when you wander around Tokyo and find a Shinto shrine that is hundreds of years old squeezed between two skyscrapers. There are tons of things here that could be done more efficiently or effectively but aren't done that way because of tradition or social values.

Just to give one example at my own job, people nearly always come to see me face-to-face for even the most trivial of things that could be easily resolved with a one-line email. Most workplaces in Japan still very much appreciate the "personal touch" of interacting with another human being and value the relationship between co-workers over the efficiency technology can provide.

What they need to do is figure out how to put their facts and figures in electronic form. Maybe using a "computer" running a "program" that adds figures up in columns and rows like a "spreadsheet".

Actual Sexts to a young woman. Set to music.

bareboards2 says...

I wouldn't be so sure.

I have been appalled by the unsolicited sexual talk I have gotten on the internet. Nothing like this, but still, unsolicited and unwelcome.

The number of times I have typed something like -- you wouldn't say that to me if we were face to face -- well, more than enough, let me tell you.

Believe me, I did nothing to prompt it. I was just a woman.

newtboy said:

Well, I say there's nothing wrong with watching gonzo porn in itself, unless you are so dumb you think that's how one should act in real life.
There's also nothing wrong with saying disgusting sexual things to your partner...if they're into it and in the heat of the moment, but not in regular everyday conversation, not even when trying to set up a booty call IMO.
The thing here is they omitted what the women were saying to the men to illicit those 'sexts'. I'm sure there were some that were egging the men on with similarly disgusting 'pillow talk', not all, but likely some. Being crude is not gender specific.

brutally honest interview with ex baltimore cop

artician says...

I've had this conversation, face to face, with at least 3 cops who I knew personally outside of their profession. It's these experiences that make my head nearly explode every time people say something to the contrary when it relates to what takes place in these institutions around the US.

So here it is, assholes. What kind of excuses are people are going to come up with to gloss over this particular vector of truth?

Homeless Hero Sacrifies

artician says...

Maybe, (suggestion for @dag?), there should be another channel /tag for this that allows for us to post thoughtful-but-offensive clips (that won't just pave the way for a slew of porn or violence).

RE: the 'educational' value-- maybe a "human condition" or "humanity" tag would be good? I know there's already 'humanitarian' but the difference in meaning is probably clear. There must be a term to categorize videos like this under exclusively... "Graphic Content"? Some way to respectfully post videos that encourage sincere, humble thoughtfulness about our world and lives, that can show content like this in that light for the sake of seeing the gravity of our existence face to face. These events, actions and consequences are all reflective of all of us.

I also have certain content that I refuse to put my eyeballs on, and would get extremely offended if I opened the Sift one day and found it at the top of the page, but I'm more in favor of giving videos like that a proper place rather than censoring it entirely.

Lawdeedaw said:

So are other sift videos that only add anger in our community. As @artician says, we are better for having seen it. It adds life to a perception that others have wrongly. It is educational, but I didn't put the tag on it because it is not educational in a certain sense.
