Thanks for the counter-point, but we're definitely not going to dial it back a bit. We recognise that you have a choice where you spend your time - and there is a plethora of websites that don't have a dial at all.

Why does VideoSift have to (also) be a place where anything goes - and everyone gets to be as nasty as they want to be? Isn't that the status quo for most platforms on the Internet? I give you any Youtube video comment stream as exhibit A.



We have chosen to differentiate ourselves as a community by not being like that. For people that don't care for this - I give you the dial-less sites.

A message like this sounds good on "paper" but I see it as a threat to those who would challenge the establishment. From my experience on this site the comments considered to be "awful" are fairly tame.
What you have done is put us passionate people under a constant state of fear that some random admin will take the "my poop doesn't smell" route and damage your account status.
Try dialing it back a notch. Allow users to express the natural anger and disagreement that exists in all humans. Apply the warning/suspension/ban when its actually warranted. I feel that any user on the receiving end of this punishment should be allowed to explain himself to an UNBIASED moderator.
I capitalized unbiased because I feel those in power do not fairly represent the community as a whole. The best governing party should have those who share a common goal but disagree on the method to obtain it.
If what we say really does "matter" then as a sociopath shouldn't I be able to express what is in my mind (within reason)? Or should I bottle it up and release these feelings on a scapegoat instead? By denying the outlet we end up more hurt.

I support this, though most people won't see their accomplishments. People need to go with the hype and at least it will bring most awareness to the Deep Web. 4chan is like some dork dada experiment - the deep dark web is deep, dark & stank. Complete anonymity is awesome when people are just & righteous, it unfortunately goes both ways though and there are plenty of Child Porn sites on the deep web that are fucking huge. More than likely your Republican senator or your priest at church are the gross fucks posting this shit.

I don't want Tor to be reverse engineered but I hope Anonymous can take down those sites and bring attention to Tor. You're either a political activist seeking refuge, a paranoid weirdo, buying drugs or uploading/downloading child porn. People should know.

As a person who has a lot of footwork focus when I dance, I can explain this.
From a stand he leans forward and slings one leg back very quickly. While the momentum is still carrying him backwards, he has to immediately bring the back leg forward, and the front leg back to keep himself moving. From that point he is pretty much in a constant falling state where the foot coming forward catching himself since the other foot must be thrown back to maintain momentum. Notice his back foot is barely getting underneath in time while the other foot has already started to be flung out. His timing is just cray good. This is also why you see him stumble at the end. His foot-speed countered momentum stopped so he ended up falling forward from his counter balance.
Hope this helps the blown brains.

Definitely wheels...You can even see him winding them up at the start before suddenly taking off. And watch again, because his "stumble" at the end is not just his momentum, you can clearly see him skating. I'm surprised people cannot see it.

I wouldn't say they all don't give a shit as much as that's the atmosphere, and many people -- teenagers especially -- just follow whatever other people are doing without thinking of the consequences for others. But they're also given no social cues that what they're doing is wrong. If there were even a vocal minority, it would be less comfortable for them, and they would have to consider their actions. Like when I was a teenager, there were all sorts of things that I did that (to me now) were obviously wrong and victimizing, but it wasn't until someone made me focus on the consequences that I really consdiered them, and after that, I couldn't enjoy doing it anymore.

All the idiots on 4chan certainly aren't like me, but I'm sure a lot of them are, and it takes very little to turn them, considering that being mean isn't really in their personalities to begin with, just as it was never really in mine -- I was just a sheep in the herd.

That said, places like 4chan specifically attract douchebags, so it's a self-selecting group of low-empathy jackasses who will never change. IMO, this will be more effective in places like Reddit where mysogynist behaviour pops up from time to time, and there isn't already a culture built around being a shithead.

Even then though, if someone says something about inappropriate talk against women at 4chan and there's a strong reaction to it, at least they're talking about it, engaging with the idea, and spreading the meme (that's "meme" in the original sense of a transferred piece of cultural information, not in the "internet meme" sense).>> ^sixshot:

I'll upvote for the point that he's making. But given most mindset of 'net trolls everywhere, I highly doubt they'll care enough to bother doing less or stopping it. Because the impression I get from randomly browsing through forums, mediums, and the likes, trolls don't give a rats ass about anyone's opinions because they don't give a damn 'bout anyone else.
In other words, I can't be bothered to waste my time arguing against trolls when the trolls themselves have no intellectual capacity to think about what they are saying or what they are arguing about.

I understand your position. There's not a lot of nuance to it. You seem to view the world in shades of black and white. To you, I'm either enabling a free-speech utopia or "banning everyone I don't like".

Reality is a bit more complicated. I'm attempting to fairly enforce the guidelines of a community with many voices. I've said before that unlike many communities, what you say on VideoSift matters, for better or worse. Commenting is not pissing into the wind here. When a comment seems to squarely fall outside of the community guidelines we take notice.



You sound like someone who has some strong ideas about how online communities should work - I'm intrigued by them - and invite you to start your own community with your own set of guidelines (or lack thereof). Until GorillamanSift launches, please adhere to our guidelines or expect us to enforce them.

Can you even name a single place left in the world, online or otherwise, that allows real freedom of speech? No, not even 4chan.

This is a really important tool we're using right now, which represents a colossal step forward for our species. Consider whether my ideas are so terrible that you're willing to drag that step back a little.

I'm in more or less in the same boat, @BoneRemake. I get very mixed vibes about Anonymous...the arrogance of some of their diatribe is a bit hard to take, and I've seen no real evidence of any real influence. OTOH, I rather like some of the points they make.

I still think most of them are little more than 4chan script kiddies...no ethics and no real talent except running their mouths. But I guess I could be wrong. Just have to wait and see.
