Absolutely STUNNING nature timelapses

arvana says...

From the artist:

"This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide. Spain’s highest mountain (@3715m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world’s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32."

Fireworks fail

Living in Beijing, the spring festival is like the 4th of July on steroids. Every night for at least a week, people buy the most powerful explosives they can (which are well past any potency limits we set in the US) and blow them up well into the night. In the first nights of the festival, from 7PM to 3AM, I heard nothing but powerful "BOOM"'s and car alarms going off.

On the other hand, the view is impressive, with stunning showers of light seen all over the cityscape.

What If: God was aliens and not supernatural? (Religion Talk Post)

peggedbea says...

hehehe my high school boyfriend had schizophrenia. that beautiful beautiful brilliant twisted little boy believed .. in kind of a stargate scenario. like aliens just dropped us off here and all the religious artifacts left behind were just reminents of them. he painted amazing pictures of it. and spent hours and hours and hours and hours obsessively pouring over the bible and relating almost to accounts of alien sightings. there was some show he used to watch at 3am on a religious channel with some fat scholarly man going over bizarre shit from like the book of enoch and jubilees and things that never made it into the bible. he was obsessed with the giza plateau and "fallen angels". it made for a very interesting few years. and when we finally broke up i was fairly convinced of all kinds of alternative theories of ancient egypt. .

Police Brutality: Cops Taser Senior Citizen In Own Home

Lawdeedaw says...

Blame it on America's unyelding sense of justice. All must be punished. We are like the borg and we raise borg police officers. Our society (and many like ours) dole out punishment to placate everyone's need for hypocritical retribution.

Pot? Go to jail! Fight? Go to jail. Accident? Go to jail. Have to pee, public? Go to jail. Accidentally kick a paramedic in the face due to medical condition, which is still agaianst the law? Go to jail. Sick.

About five years ago I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my groin and lower back/abdomen. I had my wife call an ambulance because I was afraid my appendix was about too burst or something. Fast forward 30 minutes later. The ambulance has arrived and I am on the gurney behind the ambulance in my yard. thats when the cops rolled in. In a case such as this it is common for the paramedic to do a test to see if it is indeed appendicitis or something less severe such as a kidney stone. The test is that they lift one leg (the affected side) and bend the kne, raising the knee as close to the torso as possible...if it is your appendix you will feel an intense but brief shock of pain and instinctively kick hard to straighten your leg. it was indeed my appendix and when he bent my leg I kicked, the paramedic lost control of my leg and I ended up bloodying the paramedics lip. he laughed it off since it is common (I learned later)
The two county sheriff deputies drew their tasers and commanded me to stand down. I was writing in pain strapped to a gurney. there was alot of shouting, one of the officers starting chanting his mantra of "lay still or I will tase you!" I couldn't lay still, I was in agony. the paramedic actually put himself between the sheriff and myself saving me from getting tased. Off we went to the hospital, My wife had to stay home because we have small children and couldn't get anyone to stay with them at 3am. later I learned that the officers had entered my home and performed a search without my wifes consent. she finally relented when they threatened to tase her and charge her with obstruction...this would have led to her arrest and the children being placed into police care shudder The police left when they couldnt find anything damning.
a few days later as I was recovering in the hospital from the surgery I received a notice that assault charges had been filed on me ON BEHALF of the paramedic I had "Assaulted" after getting home from the hospital I contacted the EMS service and was notified that the paramedic had refused to file charges even after being threatened by the two officers...so they went and filed charges on his behalf (perfectly legal for them to do I guess)
three court appearances and almost a year later I was finally cleared of this charge of assaulting an emergency responder (a felony) when the paramedic took the stand and explained to the judge just how everything had went down. since I had obviously plead not guilty I was liable for all the court fees on the defense. a few grand.
I have never had a criminal record, and a well established successful member of my community and I was almost raped by the people who are supposedly there to serve and protect...so yeah..cops can go suck a dick, every last one of them.

That's insane, acoustic monitors? what the hell. I've only complained about another resident once and it was because they played their music from 11pm to 3am loud enough that I could hear it clearly almost every night. I think there are a lot of people that aren't used to apartment life, they're either completely oblivious that other people live around them or they're far too sensitive and selfish to even tolerate reasonable amounts of noise by neighbors.

"Awake. Shake dreams from your hair my pretty child, my sweet one. Choose the day and choose the sign of your day; the day's divinity. First thing you see.
A vast radiant beach and cooled jeweled moon. Couples, naked, race down by it's quiet side. And we laugh like soft, mad children, snug in the wooly, cotton brains of infancy.
The music and voices are all around us."

He truly was an avant-garde poet.

Well I suspect he is largely regarded as a decent poet, backed up by music that was in harmony with his lyrics.

Great sift OP.

From ages of 10 to about 16 I did about 3-4 8.5hr trips a year to a family property: the music that made the trip most bearable at 3am was the doors.

Obama is weak

NetRunner says...

To me, this all feels familiar.

Remember how Hillary was saying Obama wasn't ready for the 3am phone call, and Obama pretty much didn't say anything about it for a week? I thought Obama was gonna lose.

Remember how Obama kicked the snot out of Hillary on Super Tuesday, and for a month solid afterwards, but the press acted like all that mattered were the primaries in Ohio and Texas? I thought Obama was gonna lose.

Remember how Hillary didn't concede after all the primaries were over, even though she'd lost, and Obama didn't say anything about it? I thought Obama was gonna lose.

Remember how the polls did a total reversal when McCain picked Palin? I thought Obama was gonna lose.

Remember how liberals were worried Bush was going to rig the election for McCain? I thought Obama was gonna lose, even if he won.

Remember how the stimulus package was being blocked by Republicans, who demanded that the entire bill be turned into tax cuts or made half the size? I thought Obama was gonna lose.

So now, here we are, with every currently published draft of the bill containing a public option, and the Republicans lying, yelling, and screaming, thinking Obama is going to lose.

Why?

Because that's what the pundits on the corporate-run TV networks are saying? Because Obama isn't firing back at them with both barrels like FDR or Truman might have?

By all means, get mobilized. Get angry. Get worried about the fate of the bill. Follow slinkerwink's diaries, and follow the calls to action. Sign up for Democracy for America's mailing list. If you aren't already on the list, go to Organizing for America and sign up, then look for events in your area. Visit FireDogLake's action page for the public option, and call your Rep and push them to sign the pledge.

Don't expect Obama to just make this happen on his own. He needs his supporters to drown out the morons who would rather see people go sick than see taxes on people who make more than $250,000/yr go up by 1%, because they're worried about socialism or death panels.

But most of all, don't count him out. He does this. He lets the other side get ahead. He scares the living crap out of us, and makes us doubt whether we'll win. Then, when you're sure he's lost, he does something that reminds you why you supported him in the first place, the tide turns, and before you know it he's won, handily.

So don't let your concern turn to despair. Just keep fighting. The pieces are already in place, all we need to do is remind these people who they work for.

When we win, we're gonna feel silly about how worried we are right now.
