Ron Paul: Drug war killed more people than drugs
The irony of Ron Paul is: I like the underlying idea VERY VERY much.
However I'd absolutely love to actually see him get down to details. HOW would he actually reduce the American military withdrawal as a World Police Force with doing as little additional damage as possible (You can't just stop the machines of the Military Compelx dead in their tracks- that would have absolutely horrible results- both economically and on a world-scape (Israel, Colombia, South Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Pakistan, Iraq...).
How does his ideology of ptotecting other's lives extend into the right of abortion (Something I remember him being kinda ...meh).
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: How can he implement this without breaking a system which has by now become VERY MUCH accustomed to all the shady deals he so much despises and WITHOUT breaking the world economy and creating an ugly power vaccuum.
This guy unfortunately is not young enough anymore to become a pioneer. He seems more like someone we'd very much be disillusioned with once he runs into the actual political roadblocks that exist.
The irony of bush and the neoconservatives is that they aspired to achieve a situation like it is now happening in the middle east (albeit a very warped version of) something which IS ACTUALLY happening NOW (though probably without any causes lying in the US).
This will NEED the American military complex and extroverted American foreign policies to work.
Ron Paul would need at least 3 terms to push what he works for. It's just that difficult. And I can't see a second Ron Paul behind him who'd continue once he is worn down (if you know more than me please PM me)
Harry Reid: Save federal funding for the cowboy poets!
Well peeps, I'm not a fan of huge military spending either, but we live on a planet where, as nations go, America is the only moral force. We're the World Police whether we want to be or not. And that's on top of having the same legitimate interests--and therefore commitments-- around the world as other nations.
These other First World nations that barely step up with resources to solve international problems can go fk themselves, IMO.
The US should absolutley reduce the military presence in some theaters but not for the same reasons as the anti-war crowd. If you're going to fight a war, FIGHT IT. Level cities. Starve the enemy, cut his balls off. Otherwise, get out.
Unfortunately, because this world is insane: false morality, a refusal to accept collateral damage and timidity at the sight of blood has made us unable to properly kill, and the result is more good people than necessary get killed.
The money "saved" on wars belongs to the people, not government. The trillions for the wars do not belong to government schools or cowboy poets. They should never be returned to the federal trough for "local" politicians to hand out to buy votes, though that's what happens.
I agree with Obama that fiscally-speaking, earmarks are a drop in the bucket (especially with 60 BILLION being lost to Medicare waste, fraud and abuse every year). Yet I challenge anyone to look your unemployed neighbor in the eye and tell them why the cowboy poets are short on cash, or why a university needs a half-million dollar grant to study why men don't like wearing condoms<a rel="nofollow" href=" <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/19/nih-funds-study-men-dont-like-use-condoms/">http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/19/nih-funds-study-men-dont-like-use-condoms/"> (yes, that happened).
Trey Parker and Matt Stone on Problems with the MPAA
I remember them relating a story with how they got around the MPAA when making Team America: World Police by beating them at their own game. They knew the MPAA would scoff at their puppet sex scene, so their originally submitted cut had the much more graphic sex scene (which incidentally is now the Director's cut). That way, when the MPAA rejected it with an NC-17 rating, they could cut it back to what they originally wanted and re-submit. Sure enough, they got their R rating.
Michael Moore on Afghanistan: Get Out and Apologize
What are we supposed to do? Play world police with sovereign nations?
When it comes to genocide, yes! The US is a signatory to the UN Convention on Genocide. It's leading article 1 reads: The Contracting Parties confirm that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or in time of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and to punish.
The US and all other signatories to this convention are obligated to act prevent acts of genocide.
What about the innocents the US has murdered in cold blood during the war in Iraq?
I thought we were talking about Afghanistan. Though for argument sake, removing Saddam has still saved more lives than the incompetently mismanaged occupation has cost.
Should that be considered an expected casualty during some elusive quest for peace?
You think war can be fought without spilling innocent blood? The question is what costs more innocent lives, American 'peace' with Saddam while he remains in power, or American war to remove him. The benefit of hindsight already answered that question before the invasion began.
You have the power of hindsight that allows you the self-assured ability to judge historic military scrimmages that lead to the winner's version of 'peace'.
I declared the inaction in Rwanda to be intolerable, no hindsight was needed for that observation. All external powers saw the genocide coming, and had their troops on the ground removing their citizens from the country within hours of the violence breaking out, and had their troops and civilians safely away never to return immediately after. The UN force on the ground knew the genocide was happening too, they used that knowledge to withdraw all but 400 peace keepers from the region as well. The blood on Clinton's hands for failing to stop the genocide has NOTHING to do with hindsight and everything to do with the decision to mind his own business and choosing 'peace' over war.
Michael Moore on Afghanistan: Get Out and Apologize
@NetRunner, it's not that Obama just inherited the war; it's that he's not ending it and, worse, extending it. I don't care if he says he has a plan to end the war, because that's all talk. Reagan talked about smaller government, but he his actions proved otherwise. Lincoln spoke favorably of the Constitution, but his actions illustrated a disregard for constitutional rights.
I don't know how many people or states would get behind a peace movement. Maybe very little. Maybe a lot. I have no basis for an accurate assessment, just speculation. I don't like to speculate.
@bcglorf, there are travesties all over the world. What are we supposed to do? Play world police with sovereign nations? What about the innocents the US has murdered in cold blood during the war in Iraq? Should that be considered an expected casualty during some elusive quest for peace? Come on.
You have the power of hindsight that allows you the self-assured ability to judge historic military scrimmages that lead to the winner's version of 'peace'. But I'd like to see people like you use your powers of perception to look into the future and tell me how some of those are going to turn out: Afghanistan, Iraq... Iran? Will peace be the verdict? Do tell.

The USA's "Defense Budget" plus a lot of other Iraq related stuff that doesn't get counted in the defense budget, is larger than the deficit. If the USA stops playing world police, then the deficit will be much less.
