Huckabee is Not a Homophobe, but...

newtboy says...

Ahhhh...I see now. You misunderstood your own quote...AND it's wrong...I'm now wondering where you got it from.

Quantum theory is not the theoretical basis of modern physics, it is a mostly theoretical part of sub-atomic physics, and could be called a 'base' for understanding much of that subject, but is not a catch all explanation for even all sub atomic physics, certainly not physics in total.
Modern physics explains the nature and behaviors of matter and energy on the atomic and sub-atomic level, not quantum theory. Quantum theory does NOT explain atomic physics at all, it's only about sub atomic physics. Quantum theory is a sub set of physics, not the other way around as you implied.
Sub atomic physics and 'atomic' physics don't seem to jibe with each other... yet, and the rules of one do not work in the other. It's all counter intuitive and difficult for scientists to understand, the lay person has a snowball's chance in hell of understanding what we even think we know, even less if they get bad info to start with.
That means your understanding is completely wrong. Even sub atomic particles can't really be in two places at once in the way you understand it...it's all insanely difficult math that suggest something that, in lay man's terms, is close to being in two places, but is not actually that, because it's also in neither place (and in some equations, everywhere at once, and nowhere)! It's impossible to state fully in normal English, it's math...and screwy math at that.
Matter simply can't really be in 2 places at once, not even sub atomic parts of it. Certainly not a person. Some experiments may SEEM to show that certain particles/waves may be, but they aren't really...it's wierd. No actual quantum physics scientist has made such an insane claim (that YOU are in 2 places at once) that I know of....it's just plain wrong and displays a complete lack of understanding of the basic principles involved and the difference between sub atomic and non-sub atomic. If someone said that, you can be certain they were either not a physicist, or were trying to over simplify and explain through a poor, un-explained analogy as poor teachers have a tendency to do when explaining difficult subjects to those with no grasp of the basics.
And I don't own any scientists, gawd believing or no. ;-)
...and none of that has a thing to do with evolution beyond being the basic 'rules' for matter.
...and none of that has a thing to do with moral superiority or morality at all.
...and it all has nothing to do with religion based homophobia/bigotry....the topic of this video....so now that another thread has been hijacked, I'm taking this thread to Cuba!

I say Yes Quantum physics is part of evolution "Quantum theory is the theoretical basis of modern physics that explains the nature and behavior of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic level." But from that understanding it is theorized that you are in multiple places at once. That point of thought has been well stated by your non god believing scientist.

In theory you are in many places at once. So what part of evolution does that serve? From an evolution point of view quantum physics should not be needed and should not exist.

Fmr MI5 Analyst: Wars on Terror/Drugs just Means to an End

radx says...

I have experienced enormous difficulties trying to keep people engaged.

It was particularly obvious to me when I returned from the 30C3 and talked to my friends about the most important shit I learned over the weekend. They are techies, the lot of 'em, and everyone is keenly aware of the Snowden revelations and their implications.

Yet after 6 months of this, the only ones still paying attention for more than 2 minutes at a time are the folks who don't blank out when I mention ephemeral elliptic curve Diffie–Hellman, aka wierd people.

In order to keep all my non-wierd friends, colleagues and acquaintances engaged, I started to discard any non-encrypted email sent to my private address as well as any calls to my cell without RedPhone after three months of warnings. People can still leave a message on my landline if they can't get their shit together.

But the point is: if even my friends (nearly all in IT) have a hard time dealing with the ongoing and ever more depressing revelations, how can I blame the family down the street for not being indignant about it...

Just because many people don't care doesn't mean that they can't, however. I know I never used to care, it takes time to learn what's going on and what the real issues are.

OH my its DISASTER THEY'LL FKN DIE!

Wake up mr city paranoid Hypochondriac man, we carry live animals all the time and in maybe 0.001% of times: that wierd shit happens. Please

Handling wild animals, especially skunks, is top-shelf premium stupid. Rabies can up to a year to incubate in humans and that dude will never know what hit him. That's only the worst thing that can happen to him from a long list of other pretty bad stuff, too.

Slow moving car take a biker out

Jinx says...

Its a glitch in the matrix!

I figured it was some wierd effect caused by vibrations.

artician said:

Ehhh... I'm going to side with the car-driver. That guy was either not watching where he was going, or badly estimated his and their trajectories and behavior. Biker was going pretty fast right up until the crash. If he tried to stop at all I didn't see it.

Also, is it my internet connection, or did just that car have a terrible framerate?

BANNED TED Talks Graham Hancock on Consciousness Emergence

BicycleRepairMan says...

I have no reason to doubt your sincerety, I'm willing to believe you've had really wierd and powerful experiences on this drug, experiences that might seem more real than the shared experience we refer to as reality. But however powerful and convincing such experiences might be, they are stil trips and hallucinations. they might be so powerful that you cant believe they are, but there is no reason to think otherwise. Our brains are fallible machines that are rather easily tricked, and this can be done by everything from chemicals to religion to a simple optical illusion. And just because it is a "trick" iow our brains being manipulated to experience things that arent happening in reality, doesnt mean it cant have a major effect on peoples life, ie: give people a new perspective on things. But it is not an "astounding mystery" as such, but of course it would be interesting to research the exact interactions that it causes in our brains, and how exactly it works.

One big tell that these trips are trips, is that they almost always include pop-sciency/cultural stuff of the time. In earlier times it involved exotic or mythical animals, in the 50s or 60s or 70s it was aliens and UFOs and stuff like that, and now its quantum physics and speed of light etc. This is a pretty solid sign that we are dealing with references from our own brain, it is in other words not external or new knowledge that's being obtained or discovered in the trip.

These are comments from someone who clearly has not given this plant a chance. No, it is not quantum physics. I stay in the same room, it is evident by someone observing that I am in fact in the room. But, what I have seen and felt was on a quantum level. I was in fact for some reason flying at the speed of light. It sounds absolutely crazy because it is, that is why it should be studied. Why are so many so afraid to accept that whatever this is, is an astounding mystery?

I say give it a shot and find out for yourself. I was the same way, I thought it was hoopla too, then I found out. I doubt Science, bless its soul, will ever unlock this mystery.

Also, I do not condone the use of this by kids or young adults. This should stay far out of reach of them. Actually, now that I think about it, lol, it is probably not a good idea to promote this thing for this very reason.

Also, I am sorry for getting crazy at you BPM.

Haha, The radio thing is really funny, as a non-american, I dont think I've ever hear a real speed-disclaimer after an ad, to me its the stuff I've heard on Simpsons or south park and arrested development stuff like that, so its really wierd to actually hear a real one.

Ruby Rhod's Evening Show - The Fifth Element

Jinx says...

Agree completely on that whole not having to explain itself. Apparently it was written by a teenage Luc Besson and thinking about it does sort of reflect the kind of story you make up as a kid. A lot of imagination, not much direction and completely carefree.

My intepretation was always that Leeloo was the fifth element. She represents life in its purest most innocent form as a counterpart to that wierd ball of death/evil that calls Zorg up on the phone (wat.). Leeloo learns of all the atrocities humanity commits, she loses sight of the point of life until Gorban gives her a reason. Love is the key but not the element imo. I just threw up a little. But here we are analysing a film which defies it. It just wants to show us something fantastical and doesn't care if we understand or not.

ps. That Gorban - Leeloo relationship is still wierd. I was getting a father daughter vibe until they touch lips at the end. Meanwhile in Leon...

It's great to watch a film that doesn't feel it has to explain itself all the time. So much stuf was just a given in this film. I wish more directors would do this.

Oh yeah, fifth element is love. It doesn't have to make sense, it's just cute

Can we Predict Everything?

Jinx says...

I was gonna say how can we prove that which way the cat "flips" isn't also somehow also determined by a factor we can't measure. I suppose its kind of irrelavent. If we can't measure it then to all intents and purposes it may as well be random.

Anyway, I remember as a kid thinking that if we could build a machine with enough inputs then we could predict the future perfectly. I then got to thinking about the kind of paradox this would cause - getting a prediction of the future would change the future unless the machine also somehow could account for this. Anyway, I was quite disappointed when I learnt about quantum, although I thought perhaps it was the universe's failsafe against the sort of paradox i imagined this machine would create

Anyway. Reality is fucking wierd.
