Volcanic Eruption in Iceland
I got to ð before my brain borked. >> ^thegrimsleeper:
This video is actually not from the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, this is from the eruption on Fimmvörðuháls that was before the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull.
Fimmvörðuháls is located between two glaciers called Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The eruption on Fimmvörðuháls started on 20th of March and ended on 13th of April, the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull started the night after on the 14th of April.
Here's a map of the area: http://en.ja.is/kort/#x=477014&y=347335&z=4
The small glacier on the left is Eyjafjallajökull, the bigger glacier on the right is Mýrdalsjökull and right in the middle is Fimmvörðuháls where this video was taken.

So this isn't Eyjafjallajökull, but actually Fimmvörðuháls, which is near Mýrdalsjökull.
Right, got it.

Yep, there are eruptions every 3 or 4 years. It's parked on the mid-atlantic ridge AND a hot-spot so there's a lot going on in the subsurface. It's still neat though, especially when they have a live webcam on it

Iceland is a volcanic island. This is normal, I thought.

Americanface, Part One
Always have said that this cat's particular early sensation on youtube (..."for more information on the Crack Spider's Bitch, contact the Canadian Wildlife Service, in Ottawa.") was one of the best that has ever been produced-Cheers to the plastiquemonkey whose own sense of high art and eye for the incredible super ultra unmundane, was one of the reasons I joined this sideshow in the first place...
Then, as the site became more and more filled with farts, cats, newsclips, and all manner of Hieronymus Bleggh, she and he disassociated, got hornier once they dragged themselves away from the puter went and had a cute little Japanadian baby, and the rest is history...cute history.
She's still around, but that bundle of volcanic island cuteness has her being more of a mommer than a sifter...thak god she still finds time to paint and draw!!
Thank you Ms. Yamaguchi. You are one twisted, fineart, puppy!...and I would love for you to introduce me to all your single Japanese girlfriends-I hear the ladies of Japan love us sensitive American boys-who treat them like queens instead of servants and chattel....and who enjoy cunnilingus and tip good at restaurants and can sing karaoke and play electric guitar and who ride Harleys' and love tube amplification and tiny electronics and ....(man I need to get my ass to Japan before it sinks!)
Penn Says: Agnostic vs. Atheist
>> ^Jesus_Freak:
The order and certainty, which I thank Science for demonstrating, in the laws of physics and gravity...you can honestly say "gee, neat that it all just came together like that?" Our planet alone would have had to have been to result of 10,000,000 lottery odds occurrences all happening in concert. Nothing was behind that?
You science guys have far more faith than I!
This is the laziest argument based out of complete lack of understanding of science. A Judeo-Christian God is the ONLY explanation for a carbon-based watery sacks of organic lifeforms that depend on oxygen and a specific temperature region.. It must have been God!
Did you ever think there is a 100% chance that we live on a planet that happens to support liquid water and an oxygen rich gaseous atmosphere? And that it isn't a random fluke our planet just happens to inhabit a narrow band of distance from a certain size star? And that the moon provides tidal forces on a mostly water planet? The reasonable explanation is that life developed to suit its environment and NOT that some mystical being created a world for us to inhabit.
You do realize there is life that developed at the bottom of the oceans in high pressure, high temperature thermal vents that uses methane for energy?! Or even silicon based thingys in some volcanic places.
Why would a horrible, inconsistent, editted, poorly translated, politicized book like the Bible be the best (or even good) explanation of anything?
You do realize half of your Bible is a bunch of oral traditions from hunter gather tribes that were adopted and put into writing to make a book that is more akin to a Boyscout Manual then anything else.
If there was a God that inspired a book, why is the Bible so flawed? Why are there so many contradictions and even what we now consider nonsense? Why do you pick and choose what parts of this holy scripture to follow? Why are you not out there stoning people to death as your God commands you to?

Technically Central America does not include any part of Mexico
My understanding is that it is customary to use either the Isthmus of Tehuantepec or the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt is the northerly inland border of north/central America, which, either way, makes a good chunk of Mexico part of central. While Mexico is not considered a "Central American country" since most of it is in North America, everyone I know who lives or grow up in Mexico is of the very clear impression that their country is in both north and central. While I was living in Mexico I flipped through some of the standard elementary curricula, and was surprised that they used the Volcanic Belt as the geographic border, which actually puts DF pretty close to the line.
NASA to Announce Life On Mars @ 2PM EST?? (Science Talk Post)
We're past 2pm EST now, right? So what was announced, life on Mars or just volcanic activity?
Bad Astronomy: Hubbles Hotties
IMO: The best image is Eta Carinae. (the second to last image) It amazes me that the expanding cloud looks like that ash that comes from a volcanic eruption... only each side is the sive of our solar system and is moving at incredible speeds. Love it.

Having an opinion is above Obama's pay grade
Well, in regards to global warming, yes they can. Especially since the global warming side has taken some serious blows recently. Being faced with evidence that contradicts warming trends, the retraction of the IPCC report that started the whole thing by some of its authors, record increases in Arctic sea ice, discovery of deep sea volcanic vents causing ice melting in the caps, and an increasing number of climatologists bailing on the idea, global warming has hit the back burner. It also no longer seems to be proper to call it global warming since we stopped warming about a decade ago. So, now it's proper to refer to it as climate change to cover all your bases. I sat on the fence reading up on global warming for a few years. I've come to the conclusion that it is false, although we should definitely still strive to clean up after ourselves since it is entirely possible to make your immediate area an absolute crap hole. I see the constant pushing of global warming and climate change in the face of contradictory evidence to be another excuse for extensions of government control and regulation. People can buy as many hybrids as they want for all I care, as long as we don't hit lows of government intereference like in England where people are being fined for having too much garbage. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1041098/Families-break-bin-rules-overfill-110-fine--drunken-yob-receive.html Although the forced change to the mercury filled bulbs are a start towards making an unnecessary shift just for the sake of feeling environmentally responsible.
Also, I agree it was a completely avoidable situation, but probably not for the same reasons as you. If we never started blocking domestic oil expansion in the first place we could already of had many of these areas up and producing already.
Roast IX: Who the f**k is this guy? (Parody Talk Post)
obsidian (n): a volcanic glass which is one of the finest raw materials for the chipping of stone tools.
obsidianfire (n, vt): a burning venereal disease caused by taking too many big black peckers up the wazoo.
Real reason for melting ice caps
No, it doesn't. However, this all began with them dropping buoys beneath the ice to discover the source of warming waters and melting arctic ice. Now they've uncovered volcanic activity on the sea floor. Research is still continuing, but what do you think would happen to the ice if there were volcanic eruptions beneath it?
