Portland's Rapid Response Team Quits Over Accountability

newtboy says...

Those are decent points, but have absolutely zero to do with the mass abandoning of their positions. It was 100% due to one of their own being charged after beating nonviolent protesters. They originally admitted exactly that, and now that they aren't being supported in their walkout, they are coming up with excuses that didn't matter to them the day before the officer was charged.

I think they should have to pay for the training and equipment they now refuse to use.

What are you talking about? You think budget cuts caused time off to be cancelled?! It costs double to not rotate in other officers, because you pay those on duty overtime, it doesn't make it cheaper. Budget cuts were not the issue when these cops were doing crowd control, only now that they're suddenly called to account for their own actions. No time off temporarily, because of extreme circumstances, was not an issue until one of their own was charged. It's certainly not abnormal, and absolutely not because of budget cuts, it costs more.

No prosecutions is the norm, if I recall, over 98% of charges levied at protesters have been dismissed nation wide, mostly because police had no evidence to back the charges they brought. You might note, as described in the article, "Mr. Schmidt immediately announced that he would focus on prosecuting cases of violence or vandalism; protesters who simply resisted arrest or refused to disperse after a police order would not necessarily be charged." They are taking a stand against anarchic violent protesters, but not the peaceful protesters with a legitimate gripe about violent, racist, deadly police acting as an anarchist gang that believes rules only apply to you, not them.

There are few prosecutions in large part because police declare riots when all participants are peaceful and not causing damage, and police are almost always the one's giving the orders to remove the people they declared "rioters", and in most cases they have zero evidence to back up their declarations, and are as violent as possible, beating peaceful videographers and reporters who were trapped and could not disperse, then charging them with refusal to disperse and resisting arrest, even violence against police for attacking police batons with their faces.
(Edit: remember the freeway shutdown when they marched on the freeway, and police blocked them from exiting or continuing while a second group of police came from behind, forcing them into a small fenced in area with no exit, then charged them all with refusal to disperse and the few that tried to disperse were charged with attacking police officers who blocked every escape route, violently attacking anyone trying to leave...all on live tv?)
Many peaceful protests became riots only after police moved in to violently disperse protests, fully 1/2 were riots because counter protesters and bad right wing actors like proud and boogaloo boys were planting bombs, shooting crowds, starting fires, driving through crowds, and murdering police in an effort to paint protesters as violent anarchists. That is verified fact directly from the DOJ investigation.

It's not a Portland only thing, police abandoning their communities because, as they indicated to the DA, "“It was like, ‘There’s our team and there’s their team, and you are on their team and you’re not on our team. And we’ve never had a D.A. not be on our team before,’” Police assume they are on a team against citizens, and won't do their jobs if, by doing them wrong with bias and malice, they might be prosecuted. They are used to immunity, and don't know how to do their jobs without it because they are abusers of power.

One day after charges were levied they quit in solidarity with the criminal abusive cop, and came up with fake excuses later.

You seem to have missed "the Justice Department said that the city’s Police Bureau was violating its own use-of-force policies during crowd-control operations, and that supervisors were not properly investigating complaints." part.

Mordhaus said:

In this case, I sympathize because Portland has refused to assist or back any of their police in the riots there. The DA has refused to charge anyone who resists arrest or refuses to disperse after police have been given orders to remove rioters (they are rioters. even the Mayor is now saying to stop calling them protesters and to call them anarchists instead).

Why would anyone want to go out, night after night, and face the same people you arrested the night before doing the same stuff?

The fact also exists that Portland has made massive cuts to the police budget. That has led to time off being cancelled for police, no rotations to move fresh police into the riot situations so the same ones have to deal with the face to face confrontations with no break, and the alternative policing option which was hands off was tabled. "A paramedic and a social worker would drive up offering water, a high-protein snack and, always and especially, conversation, aiming to defuse a situation that could otherwise lead to confrontation and violence. No power to arrest. No coercion."

There are a lot of problems with police, for sure. Portland's government is the driver behind these issues, though. Until they start taking a stand against these anarchist, violent protesters (who are PREDOMINANTLY white), the situation will not get better.

Cop Lying To Obstruct Newsman From Filming

newtboy says...

With the constant flow of proof that cops lie, cheat, and steal daily, and the complicit nature of their superiors allowing them to hide the proof of their crimes, they have forced society into requiring douche reporters chasing the douche cops to capture independent proof of their criminal behavior....proof they can't erase or deny exists.
Notice how easily this douche cop comes up with multiple lies to detain the videographer, intentionally interfering with his job, to protect his cohorts ability to lie to citizens without a record, because undoubtedly all their body cams are turned off.
Also notice how, when those body cams are replaced secretly with cams that only appear to turn off, but keep recording, they consistently capture abuse of power if not outright falsification of charges, like the one just caught framing over 120 for drug possession in a single year.

Cops have made their own job tougher by insisting on being able to legally lie, and being a cadre of criminal liars who think they're above the law, and are all too often right about that thanks to apologists and those willing to turn a blind eye.

Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

dannym3141 says...

I don't remember him saying one was right and the other was wrong, but hey maybe i'm mistaken.

What i don't understand is why it's ok for you to express your opinion about his youtube video without becoming a respected youtube videographer yourself, but it's not ok for him to express his opinion about the colours in Marvel films without becoming a Marvel film maker.

Are people not allowed to express their opinions on things? And if that's the case, why did you express yours?

Khufu said:

This opinion that color grading can be 'right' or 'wrong' is pretty ridiculous. It's just a creative decision, if you don't like it get a job in vfx and work your way up over many years until people respect your opinion enough to allow you to make the calls, then you can tell them to make everything really saturated and contrasty.

Man exposes pedophile and is being sued

newtboy says...

I think his lawyer should countersue for slander and libel. The child sex mentor has now said publicly, and also claimed publicly in writing that the videographer falsified evidence to make money. If, as he claims, that's provably false, he should counter sue for the price of a high cost attorney to defend himself, a few million for loss of future earnings as a reporter, and 3X that in punitive damages.
I hope the 'child mentor' gets put in gen pop while awaiting trial...maybe they'll save us the time and money and won't ever make it to court.

Homeless Man Does Breathtaking Act Social Experiment

newtboy says...

As much as I want this to be real, I'm pretty sure it's fake.
I was incredibly suspicious with the way the man woke up right after the videographer left the frame, extremely suspicious with the man instantly noticing the money and his really odd over reaction about it, but what put me over the edge is the obvious microphone clipped to the man's collar that is completely ignored by the homeless man. That's why the audio is so clear.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this sure SEEMS to be another of the multitude of fake 'social experiments' that's really nothing but a terribly written and acted morality play.

Icelandic horses are super friendly

Payback says...

I don't think they're particular friendly, they seem to be interested in the bag of Klenät (kleinur?) the videographer has in their lap.

Dumb Bike Thief

*promote some awesome reporting.
Also good job on the videographer's part getting the return on camera so he can't claim it's a setup and he never had it when the cops show up later.
I'm thinking 200 hours community service and a $2000 restitution fine seem in order, pay society back double what you were caught trying to steal from it.

one of the many faces of racism in america

newtboy says...

All mistaken assumption...sorry.

He was MIS-identified by the videographer/poster as an anonymous Rex Energy employee.
He was properly identified by his ex employer, MMC.
No one threatened (or apparently even informed) the 'unsuspecting company', according to the info given, you're making that up, they seem to have found it themselves, or maybe been informed by another disgusted employee that recognized him.
No one blackmailed anyone.
You're seemingly just simply making stuff up again to give yourself a reason to be angry. WHY?

VoodooV said:

Someone on the internet targeted him, judged him guilty all by themselves, sent the video to an otherwise unsuspecting company and said that we'll judge this company based on what this guy does in his off hours.

It's internet blackmail.

Smarter Every Day - You won't believe your eyes

dannym3141 says...

I've always said the word genius is bandied around way too much, and this video is a fine example. CRT screens/tvs follow the same idea - individual lights illuminate in sequence quickly enough to form a static picture, each pixel changes very slightly 100 times per second (refresh rate) to give the illusion of the original picture in motion. The CRT beam scans ("rasters") from top left to bottom right (for example) in exactly the same way that the device in the video spins (it rasters in a circle) and however many times it spins per second is the refresh rate.

It's a cool project and his PCB work is nice, and he's done a good job of translating a picture into a timed set of lights. The videographer uses the term genius because he was not previously aware of the long history of rasters. This would be a useful tool for teaching children about the process - CRTs might not be popular anymore, but CCDs are fundamental to (astro)physics, and the principles behind both cover a huge range of potential teaching topics.

You have no right to remain silent in Henrico County.

newtboy says...

When you say things like 'he's being a tool, and got what he was looking for' you're seeming to be making excuses for the cops. Maybe you don't MEAN to be, but you are. If you say he's a provocative tool (which I disagree with 100%) you are telling us why you think the officers had reason to go overboard. The reaction is the ONLY reason his being a tool MIGHT be relevant.
My argument is, not answering a cop's questions NEVER MAKES A PERSON A TOOL. (capatailzed because you keep missing that point).
I explained clearly and reasonably why this behavior is the only thing safeguarding your rights, and without people doing this, you've lost the rights already, because cops don't respect the law or your rights, as happened here.
The cops are the only assholes here, and not even within their legal rights. Get it straight. The videographer is so respectful he even calmly explains why he won't answer questions, for the cops' benefit since they seem confused about the law.
You brought up the 'watch list' for nothing, I explained how your example shows the uselessness of the 'watch list' because people who make a cop upset get put on it.
OK, once again, the cops were 100% in the wrong, the videographer is a hero 100% in the right who is NOT an asshole for standing on his legal rights, not an asshole for filming adults in public, and not an asshole for not engaging in conversation with a tool (pun intended) of the state. I think people who would say someone safely, reasonably, and respectfully standing up for their, and your, rights is an asshole are the EDIT: one's who are mistaken, the ones with a serious case of cranial rectosis...and one's that don't think things through very well.

EDIT: Do you realize that your position is 'it's these assholes that force the police to recognize their rights by exercising them that cause laws removing your rights to be written'....yet you ignore that those rights are already gone if no one can exercise them?

Babymech said:

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed by the unnecessary misquotes and 'making up arguments' myself, sort of kills the debate. I never made excuses for the cops, and I always agreed they were in the wrong. I never said Hammond was a threat to anyone, or that I felt threatened by filming.

What I have been saying, again and again, is that he can be a tool for intentionally trying to provoke this reaction, even if the cops are completely wrong. It's not a discussion about whether or not his action was legal, but you keep on bringing up the cops reaction as though that is relevant. Which makes it sound as though your arguing: "as long as what he did was legal, he can't be a tool for doing it." Which I disagree with; see also 'open carry' protests etc.

As for what effect the first amendment audits will have on legislation, I imagine it'll be a similar scenario as when corporations exploit tax loopholes. Once somebody comes up with a clever way to remain within their legal rights but still act like an asshole, the system tries to evolve to close those loopholes. I'm all for trying to steer the system in the right direction, but I'm not going to applaud those exploiting loopholes to act like assholes.

As for the strange argument about the watch list, I don't know what you're trying to say - I already told you he's on the list and that I don't think that necessarily means anything. What more did you want to say about that?

Are you going to get back to, again, the fact that the cops were in the wrong? I think we haven't explored that angle yet, let's try going over it three or four times more.

Raw Video of Metrolink Beating

newtboy says...

I'm thinking red was acting loud and crazy, getting in people's faces, and the videographer expected something video worthy to happen, and was not disappointed.

Where's Bernard Goetz when someone need him? I can't believe not a single person moved an inch to help. I find that much worse than the beating itself.
(I hope that's not tagged as the 'first overtly racist comment', I bring him up because he shot 'thugs on the subway', not because of anyone's race).
