The Most Popular Programming Languages - 1965/2020

vil says...

This is funny. Had to learn Cobol at school - lab still had a punch card machine and that was late 1980s.
Basic, obviously.
ZX Spectrum (Z80 assembly) - dissassembled and adapted a word processor for Czech - drew the extra characters and made up a printer spooler - that was the most fun with a computer ever, also I was young and had time. Also hated re-typing on a typewriter.
First thing (literally the first thing) after the iron curtain dropped got a PC and tried Pascal, databases and web-development but dropped out of all that in early 90s.
Doom, Quake, Civ, Sim City. Mostly scripts with some disassembly and poking around. Various scripts are the only programming I do now.

Sky Brown the 12 year old girl and her mega ramp

newtboy says...

I had a friend in high school that had a 15' vertical ramp. He liked to climb to the roof of his 3 story Victorian to drop in, around 40'. Another friend's ramp had a big tree next to it, he liked to grab it >30' up and sit down to rest, then drop back in from the branch. He never looked scared at all.

When you're doing what you love, the fear of failure dissolves.

That's how I was able to drive 140 over unknown uneven terrain with +- 3% traction and feel good about it. It was horrifically unsafe, but some of the best times of my life I would repeat in a heartbeat if I was still able. Thanks to various broken parts including my back, that's a pipedream now. (Hilariously, maybe ironically, I broke it working on my house, not off road racing, not downhill biking, not whitewater kayaking, just removing a cast iron bathtub.)
At least there are some decent off-road video games now to keep me out of the buggy.

SFOGuy said:

It's---frankly terrifying? Even if you were supremely confident in your physical body's skills, to be any age and launch down that ramp---my imagination (and several previously broken body parts) would not let me do it. I hope she is somehow never really hurt badly...

WHAT IN THE FUCK IS A "POLICE JURY"?

The police jury is the governing authority for each parish that operates under the police jury system provided by the general laws of the state.

The police jury is both a legislative and administrative body. Its legislative and administrative functions include enacting ordinances and resolutions, establishing programs and setting policy. As an administrative body, it prepares the budget, hires personnel, spends money, negotiates contracts and, in general, directs the activities under its supervision.

Police juries carry out their administrative responsibilities in various ways. Some parishes, for example, have made their secretaries responsible for over-all administration. In others, this responsibility has been delegated to the police jury president, who is selected from among the jurors. Some parishes have hired a parish manager as permited by LRS 33:1236.1. The law sets no qualifications for the position other than being a registered voter of the parish. Act 85 of 2006 repealed the provision that allowed a police juror to serve as the parish manager, but did allow for a police juror already serving as a parish manager to continue doing so. In still other parishes, there is no principlal administrative official, and all parish employees report directly to the entire jury or to committees.

War On USPS

newtboy says...

He's giving you the (fake) reasoning he was given to excuse the dismantling of the USPS and all the collateral harm that does.

Too bad for him it's utter bullshit, something he proved himself in his post the day before which complained about too many mail in votes being disqualified when they were checked and failed to pass various regulations....checks and regulations he now claims don't exist.

Also too bad for him Trump, who told him mail in votes are all fraudulent except his, agreed to not veto funding for mail in voting if he gets a payoff in the form of another huge tax cut for himself....this one designed to defund and end social security and save his businesses tens of millions yearly.

Insanely Big Explosion in Beirut, Lebanon (compilation)

wtfcaniuse says...

Various bomb experts have mentioned that the plume would be black if it was ANFO or similar meaning it wasn't mixed.

Buttle said:

Ammonimum nitrate does require a sensitizer in order to be explosive, however this stuff was intended for blasting, so it presumably already had something mixed in with it. The other requirement is a low explosive detonator, eg blasting caps. In this case it was probably a random accident, so not as efficient as a deliberate blasting setup.

Whataboutism...the refuge of the desperate.

As far as I know, neither visited the island, but Trump is more likely to have based on their respective relationships. Clinton rode in Epstein's plane a few times, Trump rode in Epstein's plane a few times, partied with him for decades during his pedophilia spree, hosted multiple parties for Epstein including those attended only by Trump, Epstein, and underage girls, and Epstein had 14 phone numbers for Trump.

Clinton has not been accused of any specific sexual misconduct connected to Epstein. As for Trump: During the 2016 campaign, Trump was sued by an anonymous woman who claimed he raped her at an Epstein party when she was 13 years old among various other accusations of sexual assault now numbering >25. However, several journalists who dug into this allegation back then came away voicing caution or downright skepticism, and the accuser withdrew her lawsuit shortly before the election.

So there hasn’t yet been corroboration of Epstein-related wrongdoing on Trump’s part by media outlets, or any accusation against Clinton at all.

Lol....He only finally kicked him out in 2011, >4 years after he pleaded guilty to multiple child rapes and being accused of dozens upon dozens of others, and we now know his abuses never stopped....but that didn't bother or surprise Trump one bit until >4 years later when Epstein started being publicly accused of recruiting multiple young girls at Maralago to be sex slaves while he was visiting Trump and assaulting them on the premises. Did you even read what you linked?! Holy crap!

What "defund the police" really means

bcglorf says...

The cause isn't united either.

Another part of the problem is you have a lot of people like @newtboy who really DO mean defund the police by the dictionary definition. Those folks are mixed in with the protesters who mean 'reform' when they say 'defund'.

That's all to be expected though when you see the systematic failure of the national police force that is out there. When the number of bad actors in the force becomes too many, includes sheriffs and their deputies, and sees various police chiefs and police union leaders(not toe mention Presidents) defending the bad actors, the people that rise up in anger aren't going to be a uniform centrally organized entity.

As Dave Chapelle refers to it, these are the streets speaking for themselves. The public can't be expected to hold a single, uniform and documented solution that they are marching for. It is unfair to the point of dishonesty to try and discredit the protestors as a 'mob' because their calls for reform aren't consistent enough or well messaged enough. The presumably better educated, smarter professionals running the country(from the bottom to the top) are the one's whose job it is to find a good solution. More importantly, it's also their fault for failing to enact solutions to the problem before the public outrage hit the levels it has.

The problem with "Defund the Police" is right there in the name, and its name only. It's understandable that those who lost hope on reforms felt the need to escalate into using the term "Defund."

But uninformed people that don't understand nuance nor care about policies and enforcement would likely judge that's extreme and leads to anarchy immediately, and dismiss its merits. And let's be honest, would you bet there're more informed people in the USA or uninformed ones? If there's ONE thing that USA does better than any other countries, it's politicizing the hell out of complex issues into sound bites. Pushing people into all-or-nothing For or Against camps. In the end, little gets done, but even more divisions & hate.

I watched on the news here in Canada (with its fair share of racial injustices in its policing not that far behind the USA, ) that the mayor of Toronto (our largest city in the country) picked up and used the term "Detask the Police"... I think that's a much better term to advance the cause.

Crazy Football Commentary, Animated! (Part 14)

Equally, I regarded the various protestations of my parents growing up in similar lights, often amplifying my troubles due to “inappropriate laughing”.

Black Man Gets Pulled Over For Doing 65 in a 70

timtoner says...

I live in Chicago and I moved to a part of the city abutting the suburbs. This is generally where police and firefighters live, as they have to live within the city limits. Within a week, I got a phone call from a telemarketer asking if I wanted to contribute to the Fraternal Order of Police. As I hate cold calling and I do give charitably to causes I think genuinely need the help, I told him I was not interested. What followed was 20 minutes of various forms of cajoling and abuse, as the marketer could not fathom why I, a white male in his late 20s, wouldn't want to donate to the FOP. Didn't I know I'd get a sticker for my rear window? "Why would I need that?" I asked. Dead silence on the other end. Why didn't I hang up? Because, honestly, I didn't get it. I was naive as hell, and I just didn't hear the dog whistle he was blowing in my ear.

Discretion in police action (other than speed cameras)---is all about people with privilege getting a chance to get let go--because of a special license plate frame that recognizes a contribution to a widow and orphans fund for dead patrol officers...because of ethnicity...because (from college) a cute friend who was girl undid another blouse button and smiled a lot...And in this case, to allow them to pull over some for driving while black. Ugh.

Did You Ever Imagine The President Could Act Like This?

newtboy says...

"Like that"? Explain....if you can. You mean fact checking? How dare they?!

Fox has acted hyper partisan, divisive, and vitriolic for decades. Where have you been? I guess you've forgotten Trump's fake news birther movement.
Trump has tried multiple times on the record to have various agencies and even other countries spy on Biden, just like he invited Russia to spy on Clinton. Obama had nothing to do with Carter Page being caught acting as an undeclared foreign agent or lying about his Russian contacts....nothing....proven repeatedly. Derp.
What?! I guess you don't recall the 90's at all. It's all the Republicans did for 8 years....and again with Obama for 8 years.

Fight back? By shitting on the constitution and flushing? Jebus, you are so unAmerican and delusional it's astonishing. He wants to fight perceived censorship (fact checking isn't even related to censorship btw) by private companies on their private platforms by using the government to censor them.

*facepalm.

Coronavirus:The Lost 6 Weeks America Wasted

vil says...

A good medium works for all viruses, when Trump was the virus, the media helped spread it.

Now fear of Covid is the virus, the media helps spread it.

There is not a lack of information about cancer. Its just not news.

People die for various reasons but that is not a valid excuse for killing people. Everyone dies eventually and no one wants to die sooner just for economic reasons. Bad sci-fi that is.

Proposing to kill 1 in 5 grandparents because they were sick anyway (and throw in a few random young people, mostly doctors and medical personel for good measure) to help the economy is very Ayn Randish but I bet on humanity as always. Even the chinese eventually decided to fight the virus rather than "keep the economy open" and just let some people die.

And it comes out....Trump, his family, and various republican mega donors have large stakes in the French company that makes hydroxychloroquine, as well as pharmaceutical companies (also mega donors to Republicans) who stand to make billions if the drug sees wide use.
It's unproven, it's dangerous, studies indicate it's not actually useful, but it makes Trump money. Of course your ilk are supporting it's use.

You know, because he downplayed this so much along with Fox news, americans are dying.

Blah blah blah china, blockade, yeah he did that while he was calling the virus a democrat hoax. because he did that and kept slashing funding for various gov programs designed to protect us from this --- AMERICANS ARE DYING - more than would have died otherwise.

Cant get much more anti-american than killing a bunch of americans. but I always thought you were a traitor.

Thump has a good team in place to fight this. Can it be stopped? only in a Communist country can lock down 100%. America cant do that with out bitching and lawsuits and state / local opposing, not to mention the media jumping piling on even more for Anti Trump Slant.

What are the most devastating pandemics in human history?

moonsammy says...

Interesting info, but whoever produced the video made some really questionable editorial decisions. Commas separated values over 1000, except for periods used in #1. What's with the "big stuff" in the background? How do the heights of various buildings compared to things like mountains and the size of Halley's comet relate to these mortality figures?

Just... weird. Good video though, in spite of that
