Two GPT-4os interacting and singing
Painful.
Not out of the uncanny valley yet.
ThunderCats Opening Remade with CGI
Uncanny Valley Cats
Ctrl+Shift+Face: Bill Hader is Tom Cruise
This didn't have the usual level of uncanny valley I get from most Deep Fakes, but I didn't really get Tom Cruise either. First off, Bill Hader looks a lot like TC to begin with, and the facial expressions and some facial features clearly appeared like Hader's and not TC's.
If they're going to fool competent people into believing it's real they'll have to do better.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu Trailer
HA! Well, I didn't mean literally this guy, but just i've seen some fan art that looks uncanny valley like this.
It sure does!
Pokémon Detective Pikachu Trailer
This is very very deep in the uncanny valley territory.
It looks just weird.
It feels like those fan art drawings and clips of "realistic" pokemon.
It also has a feeling of that supposedly horrible DBZ live-action movie.
Alita: Battle Angel - Official Trailer
Seems like there is a little too much impossible camera work going on. I suppose you could argue that's an artistic choice, and maybe the nature of trailers exaggerates it, but I definitely agree with the impression that it's got that video-gamy, early 2000's CGI vibe to it.
And bug eyes is definitely just creepy. The anime thing doesn't work on this side of the uncanny valley.
All the same... big-budget action, sci-fi kung-fu fighting future-cyborgs... meh, I'll see it more or less by default.
The whole thing has that "bad cgi" vibe where everything feels weightless.
Not for me.
You Will Not Believe What Obama Says About Trump
Will be a while before they get rid of uncanny valley issues. They haven't got the movements right yet, let alone mannerisms.
Easy Tray - Horrible Translation! Hilarity ensues!!
Honestly I hadn't realized it but I think you're right. I mean how could anyone who speaks english record that VO with a straight face?! The uncanny valley is a lot less deep on the voice side I guess.
Are you sure the voice isn't computer generated? I thought that accent was unique to computer voices.
The robot-proof job men aren't taking
We had better hope they are dead wrong, and that they aren't robot proof jobs, because millennials aren't flocking to nursing, it's hard. If robots can't take over most of the work load (they can) then elder abuse will be the norm due to neglect. There will still be a need for human interaction (until the uncanny valley is bridged) but the grunt work can be automated.
Funny that they make this assumption about men's percieved ability to empathize, and ignore historical professional gender rolls that are only recently being challenged. Most of their points became culturally outdated in the 70's imo.
It's sad that the last woman, asking if nursing or men should change (implying men should) clearly still thinks "manly" men can't be empathetic and caring...should she be countered with the equally insulting "pretty" women can't be smart or strong? That thinking belongs back in the 1960's.
Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal
To be overly anal about it, uncanny valley concerns more the eeriness or revulsion 'peak' of a near lifelike replica. Think dead eyes in Polar Express or the plastic faces of Japan's android models.
This to me at least is beyond that trough on the uncanny valley chart, I do not sense any revulsion personally. I can of course detect it is still not real but no particular facet triggers that doppelganger reaction.
Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal
Sorry, not quite there yet. There is no way anyone would actually look at that and think "oh, it's a video of a human".
The uncanny valley is one of those instances where the closer you get to perfection, the more obvious the flaws are.
But in terms of a video game character, this is very, very good.
I would love to know a few more details about it:
- how expensive is the rendering? We're just seeing a face on its own. If we drop it into an actual scene, will it still run?
- how well does it animate/lip sync?
Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal
I would say this one is definitely crawling out of the uncanny valley.
Photo realism in video games
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Yeah, but I mean without people complaining about how uncanny valley Grand Moff and young Leia look. This will be undetectable.
Will be? See the last Star Wars...they're doing it.
4K 60fps Photo Realism With Unreal 4 Engine
I mostly agree, but I did think the static interior shots were photo realistic, but I don't have a 4k screen.
If you smoothed out the jerky camera motion, the last scene had climbed out of the uncanny valley, imo....except the flame.
This is a really good example of showing what video game graphics are really good at (static scenes with hard materials) and what they're not so good at but getting better (natural organic materials, humans with complex animations).
That said, as impressive as it is, we are still a long way off "photo realism".

Just WTF
Ooo! You found a comfy spot in the uncanny valley!
