Where in the world are you? (Travel Talk Post)

longde says...

I live between Beijing and Cupertino, CA.

I grew up in the deep South of the US. I went to schools up and down the east coast.

I have traveled to every continent but Antarctica.

I love living in Asia.

Trayvon Martin 911 Call -- "F***ng Coons" -- TYT

jonny says...

I grew up and am living again in the deep south, and even here (where "coon" was first used as a racial slur) it would probably be considered old-timey. I definitely heard it when I was a kid, but I doubt I've heard the word used in anything but a facetious manner in 20+ years.

I have trouble imagining an under-30 Hispanic-man using that word. Isn't it kind of... really really outdated?

No.

Admittedly I live in the Midwest, and there's going to be a lot of regional variation in the pejoratives of choice, but I've never heard anyone born in the second half of the 20th century use that word.
Edit: Okay, that's an exaggeration, and I really mean people being born after like... 1960 or so. But still. The Oldentimes called, Mr. Zimmerman. They want their word back.

Who owns the police? OWS CITI BANK ARRESTS

bamdrew says...

hmmm... you can always OPEN an account in another bank by essentially writing all of your money from your previous bank on a check to the next bank account.

Maybe watch that you keep the minimum amount in that previous account until you're able to close it, but closing an account with $50 in it should take but a minute.

>> ^cito:

Yea in my town the local news reported last night that local banks are all changing the policy you must give 3 days minimum notice before closing out an account here.
it's crazy what this is sparking around the world, and I live far deep south. On the evening local news they had interviews with 2 of the 6 banks whose policy has now changed 4 refused to be interviewed but they said due to the protesting and state of the economy they can no longer allow people to close their accounts without proper notice.
shit is getting wild...

Gordon Ramsay Eats Shark Fin Soup for the First Time

cito says...

I've had sharkfin soup several times, and he's right there isn't much flavor in the fin by itself if you get the expensive one.

the cheaper ones have more fishy type flavor...

the same idea is similar to bird's nest soup. The cheaper ones have a funky gamey little bitter flavor while the more expensive ones are sorta neutral taking on the flavor of the broth and surroundings.

I've only had cheap bird's nest soup cause that is one dish that can reach thousands of dollars in different areas.

The best sharkfin soup I've had was actually in Iceland, but I've also ate Puffins in Iceland also which are a delicacy.

Those are really the only 3 "controversial" items I've ate, but being from south I eat many things people would frown upon.

From baby deer, to gators in the deep south, we'd eat just about anything or at least try it once

Tribe Meets White Man for the First Time

cito says...

There is another cool documentary called Cargo Cults

tribes in deep south america who to this very day believe the whites are gods.

and we fly in to bring supplies they line up the runways worshipping and praying to the white people.

the whites never stopped it cause last time they did it really messed a few of them up mentally, so they let the cargo cults continue to believe that whites are gods.

it's wild watching videos of them prostrating themself on the ground worshipping anyone who is white, even the young children are worshipped

Miss USA 2011 Interviews - Should Evolution Be Taught

bareboards2 says...

"The highest level"?

I beg to differ.

How about the sex in the shower, currently in the Top 15? That, my friend, is objectification.

Let's agree to disagree. I don't want to argue about this.

>> ^rottenseed:

They don't have a Mr. USA competition...at least a mainstream one. This is objectification at the highest level and what makes it worse is that they're opening their mouths to either safely pander to the lowest common denominator or to vomit the contents of their professional-beauty-pageant-contestant sized brains.>> ^bareboards2:
Thanks for pointing this out to me, rottenseed.
My mind is just churning now -- I would LOVE to see a map of the US colored in the different "beliefs." The sense I got was the deep South women were the most heavily invested in teaching "the other side."
These were also the women who were chosen to represent their state -- as @NetRunner said, these women gave "safe" answers. I loved the honesty of the one who said "wow, I just made someone mad." Extra points for honesty.
Although I don't see what this has to do with the women's movement, rotty baby. Give me a good looking man from each of these states, I'm betting you would get the same range of answers.
Anybody else reminded of the Scopes "monkey trial"? Why the hell did the pageant officials even ask this question? WHY THE HOLY HECK IS THIS QUESTION EVEN BEING ASKED???

>> ^rottenseed:
I call on @bareboards2
She needs to see the real enemies of the women's movement...

Should I feel bad for laughing at this???

bcglorf says...

>> ^westy:

Lol this is pritty funny ,
I do however think its strange how culturally its ok to laff and beliitel fat people but it would be socially unacceptable to mock sum one that is anorexic.
Im pritty sure most people would rather not be fat/obise ( to the exstent that its crippling) and its due to phisoligy , depresoin , lack of education or other factors largely outside of the individuals control as to why they end up super fat.

I think it's the powered wheelchairs that get people past their inhibitions and gets them laughing. For some reason picturing it as taking place in a deep south state adds something too...

Obama Mocks Coming Health-Care Armageddon

Abel_Prisc says...

Yesterday I heard two of my co-workers talking about this. Sort of.

Co-worker #1: "Did you hear what Obama said? He was mocking Armageddon, can you believe that?!"
Co-worker #1: "Isn't that something? How do people NOT think this man is God-less?!"
Me: /Facepalm

They then continued to talk about how our now God-less country is going right down the toilet. Then they said something about Socialism. Then something about Satan. You know the routine.
And yes, this actually happened. and yes, I live in the deep south...
