All Your History: id Software Part 5: Silent Decade (S3E11)

shagen454 says...

The last decade for id was definitely lacking. I'm looking forward to them releasing something that is somewhat good. RAGE looks pretty awesome and teaming up with Zenimax seems like a pretty good idea. I bought DOOM 3 right when it came out and it creeped me out initially; in the end I thought it was a pretty shallow game. I bet it'd be more fun to play now that not many people are releasing 3D shooters that aren't tactical - or completely brain-dead Call of Duty ripoffs.

Doom had a great thing going back in the day - you'd have to kill waves and waves of monsters but you'd be working your way towards an arch-vile or some other powerful nasty ; there actually was an objective to the mindless slaughter. Serious Sam had it down in a goofy way.

It's strange to think that out of all the great developers of my time (late eighties, early nineties) that the only developer still around that I play games from is Blizzard. How the hell have they pulled it off?! Back then my money would have been on Origin, Black Isle and id for future success. Black Isle released some of my favorite games ever but I really do miss Origin.

Never saw Blizzard being the company that would become a beacon of creativity & polish that would make oodles upon oodles of money.

Awesome stuff.
I hate with a passion those who espouse not giving their kids vaccinations, especially those who do so based on here-say or what a 'friend told them' without ever looking into it.
Vaccines keep us safe, they have eradicated many diseases that would otherwise be killing us by the thousands or millions.
So while it's good to keep a sceptical eye on things at all times stopping things like vaccines without having any fricken idea why you are other than some uninformed dicks told you it was dangerous is just horrendous.
It's the same people who take homoeopathic medicines instead of actually doing anything to get cured of life threatening illnesses.

Eradicated diseases? No, the vaccines have suppressed many diseases, but have not eradicated them. If vaccines "Utterly destroyed" the maladies then the vaccines would no longer be needed and you would be advocating their uselessness.
The diseases are still around, and will continue to be around. Vaccines, no matter how good, will always be weaker than nature's wrath.
I blame this on the community of health and science for one reason. Autism is spiking, as are so many other diseases, and the answer to the question of why is pretty much an "I don't know the answer. But I will fail to give a possible answer that is believable, and additionally I will sell our opinion without any fanfare or exictement at all. It will be like a box of shit, but then, we don't know if it is manmade shit or not, but enjoy the shit nevertheless."
Also, if someone doesn't have the answers, people will temporarily fill in the blanks for them. It is our nature, it has been the way of man for 30 thousand years. It is how science advances (Temporary thoughts or theories.) Even the smartest, liberal minds do this everyday... So you cannot really hate people who guessed vaccines were bad.
You can however hate them now that the evidence contradicts their guesses.

The way of science isn't to fill in the blanks with wild speculation. Ok, every hypothesis starts with a guess, but the blank isn't truly filled in until its been tested. Your right though, humanities curious nature seems to be born out of a fundamental fear of the unknown, and we'll make up any fairy tale to help us sleep. I honestly wish we could embrace our ignorance without shame, after all, ignorance is really only damaging when you delude yourself into thinking you know the answers you don't. Do I hate the people that jumped to the wrong conclusion, not really, but I can't say I think much of the people who propogated the lie.

Small pox is gone. So yes, eradication is possible given persistence and commitment.

Weaker than natures wrath? That is some mighty fine grandstanding there, going for the nomination of best dramatic comment . Frankly, medicine and food are the two most important areas science has advanced. For instance, mortality rates for mothers giving birth is less than 1%, down from nearly 10% so many years ago. And this malevolent force of nature to which you refer hasn't struck every first born yet.

I agree with the jist of your comment mostly, though. If my child just got diagnosed with autism, I would be looking for answers, and vaccines would seem to be a smart place to look, strange men in lab coats poking children with needles is an easy target.

@ Dr. Phil's behest, 'golden-voiced' man to check into rehab

sixshot says...

I detest Dr. Ph(a)il. I don't know why he does the thing he does and why he's still around doing it still. What right does he have to bring in Ted and then bring the rest of his family over when Ted's life has been on high speed for with all the media attention? There's a time and place and family matters are always a delicate and tricky process to tackle. Let things settle down first. Then let him approach his family at will. It is up to him and his family on when it is the right time. And they all should know that.

This is shit judgment on Dr. Phil's part and I sure hope that idiot regrets it. I guess that "Dr." is nothing more than a fake label for him.

Christmas Carols With GWAR!!!!

LordOderus says...

Super Upvote! I love Gwar

>> ^Drax:

Though I love that they're still around.. I saw them live in like, 1990 (and they'd been around for a good while before then). Is it even the same people under the costumes??

They have replaced 2 members from the original band. They plan on systematically replacing members over time as they get older and don't want to tour anymore so that GWAR will be around forever.

Honestly, how many people can recognize them without the costumes, or knows their real names?

He'll I'm a die hard fan from the early 90s and I can only recognize, name a few of them.

This woman wins WORST PARENT award

Asmo says...

>> ^Ydaani:

I can tell you as a Mormon (non-practicing but still around it daily here in Idaho) that this is just not normal. I showed it to my mom(as active a Mormon as can be) who couldn't take more than about a minute of it. This is one of those cases of "there are some in every religion". I drink, party and generally do everything the church advises against but I would be shocked if I could find many active Mormons that I have ever met in my 30 years that would ever condone this type of parenting.

Yeah, I think the religious angle was overdone. There are plenty of bad parents from every walk of life, belief system (or lack thereof), colour and creed.

Side note, I have some ultra hot habenaro sauce at my place I'd like her to hold in her mouth for a minute... One drop had my wife crying for about 30 minutes (she did eat it voluntarily I might add ; )

Asia's growing economic power

Mashiki says...

I noticed that they're only using asia as a single indicator. While I suppose that's good for pie charts and happy graphs. A single country(US) is still around 1/4 of the worlds GDP, dominating the entire AP region.

Christine O'Donnell: Evolution is a Myth

hPOD says...

I just wanted to say -- FINALLY -- someone gets it.

As for the "joke", it wasn't very funny. While I don't find O'Donnell particularly intelligent, or amusing, he took what she said out of context.

Not to defend her, what she actually meant to get across was this:
If monkeys evolved into Humans, why are monkey's still around? She messed up when she asked this, and Maher made an equally dumb comment on what she said, but everyone gave him a pass. As you said, we didn't, in fact, evolve from monkeys. And Maher is an imbecile in his own right for alluding to that we did.

As for the other guys comment about tea baggers and sanity, he/she needs to understand that just because someone has a different view of life/set of opinions than he/she does, doesn't make them insane, retarded, stupid, or otherwise. I'm so sick of this kind of crap on Sift and other such boards. Not for nothing, but the media loves to sensationalize the idiocy of society. You almost never see a regular democrat/liberal, republican/neocon or tea bagger in the news...you always see the extreme idiot that makes them all look stupid.

>> ^BicycleRepairMan:

>> ^Fantomas:
She makes an excellent point. Really! If evolution is real, why aren't teabaggers evolving into sane people?

Actually both are invalid points, and Maher isnt really making sense in the video either. As I never tire of mentioning:

1. We did not evolve from monkeys (or from chimps or bonobos or gorillas) we evolved alongside them. They evolved, we evolved, fruit evolved, and so on. Its not a matter of time as Maher implies, because monkeys would never, even if you could watch them evolve and reproduce for a billion years, then turn back time and replay the tape a billion times, evolve into humans. Which brings me to...
2: Evolution is not directed towards a specific goal or goals. if that was true, there are something like 10 million separate "goals" on this planet, species that undoubtably will, in the fullness of time, join in death the 99.9% of all "goals" that are now extinct, either by outright extinction, or by evolving into subspecies that look nothing like them.
EDIT: thats not to say I didn't understand the joke, btw
