The thing is, when you play those five first matches, you get matched against players that are almost certainly better than you, so you get your ass handed to you. After that you get placed in what the system believes is a league where you'll do about 50-50, so it's relatively fair.

Every few months I end up watching a bunch of sc replays (when/will cheese fail is awesome) and resolve to give it a go again. Then I get my ass handed to me, again.
I'm an average player at most games, but sc2 just defeats me for some reason....

I'll bite.

1. Online-only: Yup.

2. Overly-monetized: So was Diablo 2. Now those who want to spend money don't have to go to sketchy websites.

3. Dumbed down: nope. With the skill rune system and the crafting, as well as the new skill bar, there's going to be more depth in D3.

4. Linear: nope. Still randomized dungeons and quests.

5. Cartoony: Nope. The beta is anything but cartoony. I'd say D2 was way more cartoony with its rainbow pantheon of monsters.

Yeah, the original Mario Kart is/has been one of the most crazy expensive SNES games for awhile now.

If you want value, I'd go with the GBA version, Super Circuit. It has all the tracks from the SNES version (Retro Cup) plus 16 new ones, plays and looks near identically (mode 7 goodness), and has one or two of the newer items introduced in the 64 version (the jump Feather has been removed though). Also, portable!

A pre-owned Gameboy Advance SP or Micro is dirt cheap. You could grab one and 15-20ish (couple bucks a pop, depending on the property) GBA games for the price of one copy of Mario Kart SNES.
