Richard Dawkins interview on "The Enemies of Reason"

johnald128 says...

richard and judy are kind of like rabbits caught in headlights, why are they so damn jittery?! they seem to have problems forming sentences and have absolutely no depth. they're just the types of people that make richard dawkins feel the need to go about teaching people how to understand basic reality.
wasnt too impressed with the first part of dawkins' new prog 'The Enemies of Reason', no way near as good as 'The root of all evil', there just wasnt enough said.

BicycleRepairMan says...

It is oversimplification to say that this or any other conflict is purely the result of religious dogma. The root of all evil, so to speak.

So, because its only responsible for like half of all the misery in this world, its wrong to point it out? Nobody is sayin every murder or crime is done in the name of, or because of religion, you are the one doing the simplification there.

I believe a single life, or twin tower, or country, taken away by religion is one to many, and there happens to be many of them. Two wrongs dont make a right. There isnt a single "good deed" out there, done or said by the religious, that could not be "justified" using secular motives alone. No superstition required. conversely, there happens to be alot of crimes out there done, and opinions held, by the religious, you would have a very hard time justifying, without having some extremely wierd opinions on how the world works.

In fact, with the mind and will of God conveniently contained in a single little black book, it is hard, if not impossible to imagine a crime so absurd or horrific that it could not be justified with the help of some obscure, self-contradicting scripture, in this way, God really does perform miracles with our minds.

There are a lot of sad things that happen to children and adults throughout the world. It is oversimplification to say that this or any other conflict is purely the result of religious dogma. The root of all evil, so to speak.

How about corrupt govts, inhumane cultural practices, racist beliefs, long histories of conflict based on land ownership disputes, cultural beliefs like you'll be cured of AIDS if you sleep with a virgin, classist views, egotistical behaviour, addictive behaviour, domestic violence?

These conflicts come from plain ol' dysfunction and man's inhumanity to man, which every single person on this planet is capable of, regardless of whether they believe in dogma or not.

Verbal abuse stemming from feelings of intellectual superiority is a form of inhumanity to man. Are you free from this one?

Richard Dawkin's The Root Of All Evil (God Delusion & Virus)

benjee says...

This is by far Dawkin's best documentary (and he's done some seminal works here in the UK). I appreciate that some Sifters don't like it (even those like yourself, who possibly share some of his views). But there's new people who haven't seen it, and neither of your comments put me off posting more.

I think this is the best anti-religion documentary I've ever seen - of which there's multiple parts of on here. It was previously posted by HAMFIST back here: The Root of All Evil with Richard Dawkins - pt 1 - but was pulled from YouTube a few months ago. And there's always the 'Hidden From My View' playlist - so your Sifting sessions can be spent happily ignoring them all, Goofball...

You don't make any sense, and could not be any more wrong Chang:

Athiest's lives are more meaningfull, as we know this is it. There's no heaven or hell...we have just a few decades to understand ourselves and each other before nothingness. We have to take responsibility for ourselves, exactly because there is no 'higher power' to "forgive us of our sins"...just our own conscious and society!

Because we're not constrained by millenias old ideology; we can think for ourselves and realise the true value of people, honesty, history & science. Not the indoctrinated political creations of various empires and movements over a comparatively more recent time. Instead of me attempting to understand grammatically void comments of no meaning, can you guys just watch either of my above two linked vids, or any of the below before posting (will save me plenty of futile typing):

The Mohammed Scene Comedy Central Never Showed

Videosiftpal says...

My arse. There are plenty of depictions of Mohammad, by Muslims, going back centuries. This fatwa against depicting Mohammod in any form, is an entirely modern, conservative trend, promoted by only certain Mullahs. Any quick look at the history books, in museums and so forth, will prove that to be the case.

As for the veil, I wouldn't care whether they wore one or not, but I think if a muslim woman wants to work in a school with young western children, then she can expect to be asked to abstain from using the veil. It's not an unreasonable request when it is the children's degree of comfort at school that is paramount. Moreover, is muslim when are allowed wear the veil in the West, why aren't Western women allowed wear knee high to short skirts in places such as Saudi Arabia or in Kuwait, where women only recently won the right to vote.

There is a class of civilisations, and while islam is as far from the root of all evil as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism, it does nonetheless have an obligation to address its believers who feel very comfortable in dragging human civilisation back to the dark ages because they think they were more pious times.

Enough already!

Why do Atheists Care? One man's thoughts

InvaderSil says...

I know at least one christian fundie that "espew" idiocy. You must of missed Richard Dawkins piece "The Root of all Evil" where he points out christian mobs, or which I sometimes refer to as Mass on Sunday. If that "mass" term is wrong, please let me know. Being ignorant isn't a cornerstone of atheism.

Posting Guidelines: Rule 4 Definition? (Sift Talk Post)

benjee says...

So - in summary (to make sure I / no-one else makes the same mistake again): no multi-episode series are allowed at all on VideoSift. Any feature length film / single-episode specials are exempt from the wrath of rule 4 - and therefore will not be removed.

To take this point to its natural conclusion: if all multi-episode (more than one seperate broadcast) series are not allowed...When are the others to be removed? (IE Richard Dawkin's The Root of All Evil - a shame as it's a great 2 part series; and the rest which have escaped the queue...)
