Fair comment Empire, it's definitely one of those "two way street" situations, ain't it? She had the choice of risking the child's life with chemo, or refusing it so the child would have a better chance of survival, I guess she figured the latter being the better choice. Either which way, it can't have been an easy one to make.

I feel somewhat divided about this...

Now not only does her daughter have to go through life as an orphan (i'm sure her uncle and aunt are nice people, but i doubt that it's the exact same thing), she will also go through life knowing her mother died to try and avoid hurting her.

I dunno.. it's just sad.

Tbh if I ever saw/met this guy in Van, I would punch him as hard as I could in the face for every spoken line he had in Indy IV. I don't apologize if that makes me seem like a bad person. He voluntarily helped ruin and rape Indiana Jones.
Keep this man (Tingles) away from Jar Jar Binks, Scrappy Doo, The Great Gazoo, Wesly Crusher, and every orphaned kid added to a sit-com family in it's final year.

Stephen Fry's Mormon Encounter

bareboards2 says...

Funny. But his conclusion that MOSTLY childless orphaned women of a certain age can be seduced by the idea of a family support system, being the only target audience for the Mormons, is pretty down right silly.

The world is made up of an array of different people, with different needs.

My brother was "seduced" into the church at age 20 with all the family stuff. He certainly wasn't alone.

Having said that, a friend of a friend fits his imagined demographic perfectly. Except she hid the fact she thought the whole religion was hogwash -- she just needed help as an older woman with no family, and she joined the church to get it.

It's all fascinating, however you slice it.

i was fascinated with this video.i thought this young orca was imitating the sound of a boat motor.
turns out he was an orphan and did indeed love motor boats.

Unfortunately, Luna died tragically as a result of accident. Once he played racing with a motor boat, its captain was also carried away by a play with the orca and he made an unexpected manoeuvre. Luna collided with the vanes and got split to pieces. The man sincerely blamed himself because of this accident but this mistake can't be corrected - Luna died. The motors that he loved so much became the result of his death...

A friend sent me this video, and I thought it was cute, but didn't make the connection.

Bill Nye Explaining Science on Fox is "Confusing Viewers"

BicycleRepairMan says...

The point about global warming is that all the available evidence shows that:
1. It is happening
2. It is man-made.

Why is that a problem? well, because we dont know what the consequences could be, we dont know how to stop the rising temperature or if theres a limit or if or when we can reverse the trend.

All of the above could happen, or it might not, some of it may not be due to GW and some of it may be. The fact is that we are messing with earths ecosystem, which is the very reason we are here in the first place. We grew up and evolved as a species on this planet, under these conditions, how will a rapid(geologically rapid 100-200 years) change in climate affect us as a species? how will it affect millions of other species? How will it affect weather? viruses? diseases? deserts? forests?

We don't know

Thats the point. some of the above are possible consequences of global warming*.

*or some denialist pulled it out of their ass and put it on the web so that other denialists could impress us all with their extensive lists.

You're not dealing with reality...you're thinking idyllically. You can't tell people "Don't have kids unless you have enough money" it won't work. So instead the society has to do something to make the situation better for all involved if it considers having children a positive thing for the society.
You can tell people exactly that, in the same way you can tell them, "Don't buy a sports car unless you have enough money." Some idiots will do it anyway, and provoke the consequences. What you won't have is society paying billions to redeem their irresponsibility.

http://www.ehow.com/facts_5391105_average-cost-child-birth.html

sorta ranges from 7-10 thousand for just child birth

http://usgovinfo.about.com/b/2010/06/16/cost-to-raise-a-child-in-us-tops-220000.htm

so lets say 225k to raise a child as a ward of the state (this is probably a HIGHER cost that the state would actually pay as the above estimate is for a middle class upbringing but whatever)

i mean in poorer parts of the world, it only takes 400/yr to raise a child in an orphanage with the BAREST of necessities... and then see where the cost to raise 40 million orphans compares to other expenditures http://www.stand4kids.org/the-cost-of-providing-for-40-million-orphans-vs-the-cost-of-sin/

i mean seriously, they are only part of your society, why treat them any different than someone from a 3rd world nation?

now I'm sure there aren't 40 million orphans currently in the US

In the US there are approximately 500,000 children in foster care (Based on data submitted by states as of January 16, 2008) * http://abbafund.wordpress.com/2009/10/16/orphan-statistics/

according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orphanage thats alittle over 1/2 the number of orphans (according to state of New York statistics), another 1/4 is with family, and about 1/6 is in state ward care... my math may be off, but lets say, 100,000 children on tax dollars

~ 225,000,000,000 cost per year for orphans
311,954,380 current USA population http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html

or $721.26 in taxes per person per year, roughly $60/month in taxes

obviously this isn't taking into account money foster parents receive to aid with their fostering... but again, the 225,000$ estimate for the cost a state facility in regards of cost to raise a child for life is HIGH... both in regards to the fact that not all children will be in the orphanage from day 1 to adult hood, some don't become orphans until later... and how the facility itself will not be spending the same amount and a middle class family to raise the child... on the other hand, not every citizen pays their taxes or is taxable

but it is very safe to assume <$60/month as the cost to each tax paying citizen in regards to this
not $60/kid... $60/month for ALL of them

its about GREED

oh man, what a burden!

The Most Aggressive Defense Of Teachers You’ll Hear

packo says...

>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:

I love to see a person who is passionate about what they believe in. That kind of thing always gets mad props from me. Kudos guy. Golf clap.
But the sad reality is that there are precious few in the teaching profession that have this kind of passion. And even the rare teacher who DOES have the passion has a heckuva time working in a system that is more concerned about the welfare of the teacher's union than the education of students. I could go on for hours about screwed up teachers, regulations, and all the other garbage that cumbers our educational system. It’s all well and good to stick up for the good things, but it ends up ringing pretty hollow when you know there’s a mile of manure beneath the pretty green-grass rhetoric.
For example… I’m no fan of lawyers. But if I was a lawyer, you how I could respond to his last question?
“You what to know what kind of difference I make? I make drunk drivers go to jail when they kill kids, but walk away from the accident. I make teachers who have sex with their students tremble when I’m on the other end of the phone. I make laws that protect widows, the elderly, and orphans. I make companies clean up their messes, and pay the people they hurt with their negligence. I make government officials talk about the laws they try to sneak through the system. I make rapists and murderers go to the electric chair. I stare right in the face at all the scum, sleaze, and filth in society that YOU’RE too scared to even talk about. I hold the powerful accountable. I make the guilty pay. I defend the innocent guy who society never gave a chance. That’s the difference I make, pal…”
See – it isn’t too hard to list all the GOOD things done by a profession while desperately ignoring the slime, crap, and bologna. Golf-clapping his passion, but not impressed with his method.

lawyers don't make laws
defense lawyers make ALOT more than prosecution
and they are just as likely to deny someone their just dues, and protect those in the wrong... probably more likely, because thats where the money is at

trying to put law and education in the same boat has 1 major flaw
there's no money in teaching...
its much more likely to find corruption where there is money
its much more likely to find character where this isn't
