Lake Oroville Drought, California

luxintenebris jokingly says...

know and agree with that feeling. did a quick search and the story is remarkably similar to this article...

https://www.kqed.org/news/11882312/lake-oroville-shows-the-shocking-face-of-californias-drought

...and is not Oroville is also the same damn dam that had a problem w/their spillway structure collapsing recently?

[at least this link is 'human' generated]

So not a fun job, i.e. Oroville OverLord. Just think of he/she when you're getting Kind of Blue. Miles of problems for them. Whether the weather goes all rain or no rain, there's no 'So What' for them. Only hope for it to go Blue to Green so it isn't All Blues.

Upside: while it's dry the spillway is being repaired.
Downside: it may not be necessary

[...and the job could lead to empty hours of boredom, only to fall to the temptation of getting the drawing crayons out to do Flamenco Sketches; dreaming where they could be, and what they could be doing.]

What is with these weird generated news stories using text-to-speech? It feels icky taking them at face value. The images could be total bunk since there are no attributions or anything.

I'm not suggesting the drought is fake, I'm just saying this is one of the worst sources that can be posted.

When did Indonesia annex Australia?

Australia is fine. 50c in the summer, no rain for months, millions of fresh water fish dying, towns running out of water, farms turning into dustbowls. Massive bushfires at the end of winter. No wuckin furries.

Asmo says...

Heh, no, I said we are capped at 5 KW/h input, our product midsummer is around 35-40 KW/h @ 8 cents per, or $2.80 paid to us (assuming no rain/clouds, winter is closer to 5-12 KW/h per day). Then from 5pm-about 6am, we buy energy back at 36 cents an hour. And as the wife and I are both working during the day, we use the bulk of our energy between 5-12pm, meaning any profit we make during the day is completely overwhelmed (eg. 20 KW/h @ 36 cents = $7.20). I live in Australia where the days of 45 cent feed in tariff are long gone (and further, it's a false economy where non solar users are subsidising that tariff for the few fortunate enough to take advantage of it).

Even with the 4 grand gov. rebate (my system ended up costing ~$12,000 AUD for 6KW), it's not likely to make the money back prior to the end of life for the panels (25 years) if electricity prices keep rising without the feed in keeping pace. Add a battery system so you can load shift from daily production to cover nightly usage (where the real cost kicks in) means that you'll be running at a significant loss over the same period, as you'll probably have to replace lead batteries at least twice over the life time of the panels. Even if hydrogen fuel cells or some form of Li Ion battery becomes far cheaper, it's still loss making for the owner, subsidised to boot and the cheap manufacturing is because the panels are produced in China where even the most efficient of factories are utilising enormous amounts of carbon resourced energy, materials that are carbon intensive to make and manufacture etc.

I'm not saying solar is bad because I want it to be, I'm saying it's very easy to sell to people to make them feel better, but like any "too good to be true" story, there's a hell of a lot more beneath the surface than most people realise.

As for nuke and hydro, yep, they have downsides, but they are the most effective sources of energy in terms of return on energy invested that we have available to us at the moment. And the damage of hydro, if it replaces coal burning facilities, might be significantly less than the damage from allowing GW to continue to run unabated.

I don't understand. If you are selling at 5kw/h during daylight, why are you seeing only slight decline in your bill? It should be near zero, if not a check written to you if you are careful to not use much at night. I went from $4-500 per month electric bills (we have an electric hot tub that sucks major juice) to $30 bills in summer, and under $100 in winter. My system cost around $40K, and I got back around $5K (and lost out on tons more because when I bought it the tax rebates didn't roll over and I didn't use them all). I live in N California, where it's incredibly foggy, and it still took under 9 years to pay for itself in savings. Had I been able to use all the rebate (like you can now, it rolls over until you use it up) it would have been a year earlier paying itself off. Since the system should last 20 years, that's a great deal, even for you at 11-15 years to pay itself off, that's still 5-9 years of free juice, and 20 years of never losing power (if you have batteries).
Another benefit is from decentralizing power production. That makes you immune from most failures or any possible attacks on the system.
I do agree, it's not a perfect solution, and not 100% pollution free, but it's a great solution for most, if done right. The carbon costs are relatively small, and a one time event.

I'm all for nuke if done responsibly, which means not on coastlines, built with failsafe design features that don't require power to halt the reaction and store the fuel, and not experimented with to get a bit more power out (which caused Chernobyl and 3 mile island as I understand it).

Hydro, on the other hand, is always incredibly damaging to rivers, which along with providing the water we need, feed what little wildlife we have left. I am against any new hydro projects and advocate removing the failing one's we have now. They are short lived under the best of circumstances, but the damage they do is often permanent.

This man, fox news, and all his "scientists" are fucking lunatics.
CO2 concentrations have only breached normal nominal ranges from nature alone within the past 20 years.

How can he say stuff like this ? Hes a fucking climatologist, youd think the guy would bloody well know better.

Australia is facing the LARGEST drought we have ever seen, and it is persisting.
That is to say, that previous lakes and river/estuary systems that went close to being dry, still had recoveries due to late rain seasons, and the ecosystems would survive...thats not happening now, the rivers and estuaries are literally dieing, and have no chance of recovery if it continues along this path.

Our farming industry has been decimated, they have been forced to sell off all their cattle / sheep, and destroy all non-essential plants, and trim back to the stalks those that arnt in flower / spawn cycles. If this was the US, and we had a similar system with FEMA, this would of been declared a national emergency and been ongoing for the past 10 years.

I honestly can't remember the last time it rained here, theres this huge water resivour that was built behind my house estate about 70 years back to prevent flooding, because this area was prone to it back then...and now, no rain.

Global warming is a crock ?

What about the berring straight being OPEN for the first time, EVER during the summer months!! ?

Or the perma-frost in the outer rim of the atlantic region (norway, iceland, greenland etc.) thawing out ?

This isnt fairytale shit made up just to scare people, it is actually fucking happening. That this guy has the audacity to pool together 30000 willing idiots with pHD's is a scorn on his curriculm vitae`, im amazed he even manages to keep the weather channel running.

Australia is having to invest in massive scale water infrastructure upgrades, billions and billions of dollars is being pumped into desalination plants and new pipelines to help prevent the death of this country. It is serious, and it has nothing to do with population, the country has had a steady population for quite some time, and increases due to immigration do nothing to dint the overall size of the populus.

Mr. President, Distinguished delegates...

[H.I.M. Haile Selassie I dialect]

[Bunny Wailer dialogue]
Since the beginning of modern civilization
Generations have witnessed and inherited the only conflicts of world wars
But behold the marriage supper of the lamb and the bridegroom onto his bride
Then shall the earth's children know the true expression of ONE LOVE
Then mother earth shall honeymoon in peace.
Forever eliminating the aspirations, lust and anguish of wars and rumors of wars...SELAH!

If you cannot do it, if you are not prepared to do it...then you will die.
You race of cowards, you race of imbosiles, you race of good for nothings
If you cannot do what other men have done
What other nations have done, what other races have done
Then you yourself shall die.

Global Warming? Coulda fooled me. (Blog Entry by MarineGunrock)

joedirt says...

Are you serious?! Hello? You're a smart guy. Look at it this way, on average across a whole year, there is an average temperature. It doesn't vary by much and even in global warming scenarios, it is a few degrees.

So, even not talking about actual year-year warming. Let's assume the average global yearly temp is constant.

So, on average when you start having hotter and hotter weather (from sun output or CO2 etc) guess what? It means even colder extremes as well. Once you start pulling one part of the system to extremes, the whole thing becomes more extreme. More wind, more hurricanes, more rain, longer periods of no rain. The hotter the summers are average across summer months means you have to make up for that in the winter. (On average).

It's like playing slot machines over a very long time. Hot streaks on average will lead to long cold streaks. (Of course in this example slot machines are not truely random, but rather have a preset payout scale and actually manipulate winning percentages to come out with average payouts of 95% or whatever.
