Alone In The Dark's First Scene/Level Walkthrough

New Rule: The Lesser of Two Evils

enoch says...

@newtboy
i like the 'failing liver" analogy.
appropriate and easily understood.

and i can understand where milkmandan is coming from, but my perspective is more aligned with yours newt.

what consistently baffles me,is how so many people are willing to simply accept this short term strategy from our politicians.

there is no surprise when corporations push for this, they are just focusing on their own interests and bottom line, which is short term profit.

or the politicians who bow to their neoliberal masters to receive those tasty campaign contributions.

or even the banks, who again focus on their short term gains.

these players are all behaving as they always have:for their own self interest.so there should be no shock or surprise when they act exactly as they have always acted.

but when i see everyday, normal people defend the behavior and actions of oliticians, financial institutions and multi-national corporations.it baffles me as to why they would choose to do such a thing.

we can understand why those players seek to retain a system which benefits them, their shareholders and their bottom line, but that system no longer serves the interests of the people, community and society as a whole.

so why make arguments defending it?

it is,quite frankly, killing us slowly as a species.

look at germany.
that country has slowly been recruiting, educating and now poised to corner the market in:new energy, renewable energy and are leading the world in breakthrough technologies in all energy fields.

germany has long played the long game.
they now dominate the entire EU in finance, and are now focusing on dominating the globe with new energy technology.

and what are we doing here in america?
pushing through more and more neoliberal policies that immiserate the working poor, both here and abroad.desperately continuing our destruction of entire ecosystems to exploit our natural resources for:oil and gas.military conflicts, which only make this country less safe, all to exploit other nations and extract THEIR oil and gas,and the cost in human lives is absolutely indefensible.

all of it.
every single bit of it for short term gains for an extremely small minority.

and here we are, with trump opening the flood gates to further exploit and destroy our natural resources with no thought or plan for the future.no investment in our communities, nor our society as a whole.

and for those who wish to make an argument that hillary would be better.i will only concede that on a domestic level this may have been true, but hillary is a neoliberal corporatist, and she would have pushed for even MORE military intervention in the middle east.MORE sanctions against countries unwilling to play ball,in order to politically squeeze them out,and even MORE of this countries policy of "regime change" to exploit and extract from those countries their precious resources.

i strongly suspect Iran would have been next on her agenda.

so when are some of these people going to step up,and realize that both trump AND clinton are (or would have been) disasterous for us as a community,a nation and as a species?

because they both only offer short term solutions to long term problems.and those short term solutions only benefit a minority of the population.

we could turn this ship around TODAY,right now,if we so choose.
we need more politicians like elizabeth warren and tulsi gabbard.we need more integrity in our media and journalists willing to do their job and criticize power, not bow to it just for access.we need the people to become engaged and confront their representatives, and make them uncomfortable, not treat them as celebrities.

and we need to reject the system where rich people choose who we get to vote for,and begin to dismantle this two party duopoly.

because trump vs hillary?
this election cycle has just revealed that both these candidates are not the disease, but rather the symptom of a very broken, and dysfunctional political system.

we need to begin to invest in the future.
and reject the status quo as no longer being viable for the continued existence of the human species.

and with the newly energized american public, who are growing in numbers daily, and is a direct response to the unmitigated disaster that is trump.there may be hope for us yet.

because if we stay on this trajectory,we are fucking doomed.

How Sony's Betamax lost to JVS' VHS Cassette Recorder

SquidCap says...

He forgot the most important blow to the betamax: JVC licensed VHS, SONY refused to do it and wanted to take the whole video market as a monopoly. So VHS was available, in cheaper prices from multiple manufacturers and with ever increasing options while SONY and BetaMax had couple of models.. Not the first time SONY has lost something over greed, BluRay almost went with the same route (allthou there were several companies developing it from the start).

BetaMax cassette was 1h with the short play (and better quality), 2h with long play (later over 3h). Even on that machine he demonstrated.. The real reason for video cassette wars going for JVC was licensing and price dropped obviously with competition. But BetaMax was around almost for the entirety of video cassette history, collectors often wanted theirs in BetaMax for better sound and slightly better picture quality. Sound difference was noticeable, picture,, naah, not so much (i was there when this war happened...)

Sony was offered to join JVC before either had come out...

World of Warcraft - Cataclysm Cinematic Intro

westy says...

>> ^Yogi:

It actually annoys me how after 6 years I'd still rather play WoW than other games coming out. They're just never as good.

Realy ? , the Core Interactoins and game play in wow are terrable ( quests , combat , delivery of story )

( although i do recognize the technical achivment and aspects of the visual design and the internal ballencing of items)

the thing wow does well is the illisoin it gives the player of Progress and time well spent.
I think wow is allso good as a socail game a 3d chat room with actoins and events taking place.

In the end people might realy enjoy wow which is fine , but I Would allso bet that the main motivatoin for people to play wow is The stat horing and levaling up.

Personaly I dont play wow I gave it ago for 5 hours and allso watched a friend play it over 4 years.

People spend way to long playing wow and not recognizing how piontless building a charactor is when what u can do with that charactor is so week and unimaginative.

granted there are plenty of games with stat bassed mechanics as the core motivator , but at the same time these games often can be finished in 50 hours or so.

Maby In 15 years or so we will have the technoligy to make an MMO with Deep content and storng charactor devlopment and the abality for people to truly have an affect in the world. something that allowed for creativity and dosent dumb the minds of players that take part in the game.

when i play wow it feals like some unforfilled promis , just like the CGI introes , if the game was like how they portray it then wow would be amazing , if u truly were an indervidual charactor with actions that actualy have a cusal affect on the world and the people in it.

.............................
allot of my negativity towards wow comes from the affect i have seen it take on people that have become adicted to it , its realy simular to gambaling adiction.

I belive people are more likely to be intrestign and understand the world and develop themslefs if they intake multiple forms of art , play manny games and do manny activities , lots of people only have time for wow and nothing else because everything else would detract from there levaling of there charactor , and getting Item x.

Theft by Deception - a history of tax law

cryptographrix says...

Apologies for such a late reply - I've actually been trying to find references to Vernice Kuglin's "demonstrating successfully that she was not aware of the relevant (case) law." I just noticed that you stated "illegal" as opposed to "legal," above.

As for what makes it illegal for her to pay Federal Income Taxes - well, that's quite evident in the Constitution - the Federal government was given no power of taxation over the people. That is what her lawyer argued for her during the case that she won, at least.

In your second paragraph, you note that "The Supreme Court changes the Constitution by offering new ways to interpret it," but just by this statement, you are negating the ninth amendment - that the Supreme Court does not have the power, either, to deny or disparage rights retained by the people - therefore, according to that one amendment, they can only interpret it two ways - in favor of giving people more rights, or of not interpreting it at all.

I want to thank you, actually - and at some point, I need to buy you a drink. You've helped at least myself see a lot of historical relevance in what is about to happen in the United States quite soon - a relevance that otherwise I would have overlooked - that the American people are not going to simply sit back and let happen what will, but will hold debates, in very much the same manner that you and I have now, and will learn what there is to learn about these issues.

I think you minimize the value of the strive for independence of the United States that began with the memes created by the founders of this country, and I don't think you understand just how long of a duration these challenges have lasted. This game has been in play since prior to the founding of this country, and prior to the founding of most every country currently in existence today. Those in opposition to it(the inherent slavery of 70+% of the population) vastly outweigh those that actually favor it - I think people know, now, that this game has been played for too long - far too many see the correlation between the past and the present now.

I also hold the opinion that you have not paid much study to the reason for the independence of this country - "taxation without representation" is the commonly referred term, but, in effect, the founders of this country created it to be independent from the corporatization that was occurring in Britain, as a result of the rise of the Bank of England.

At this point, it's a very long-played game of Chess, and it'll be interesting to see what "checkmate" is.

Again, you point to societal mores that have changed in the past 200 years as evidence that one should not trust or abide by the general theme or the Constitution, nor the basis for which it was created. Fact of the matter is, through legal methods, all people are now counted as onw whole person, and no longer 2/3rds. Why you would bring the same irrelevant statement up again is beyond me.(also, if you haven't noticed, the "President" has been elected by the select few for centuries, as originally, the founders of this country did not have a way to count each and every vote. Nowadays, the popular vote usually guides the electoral, but not always[as in the case of the last 2 Presidential elections])

The Constitution is as much as, if not more, relevant now than it was when it was written. It needs to be updated to account for new developments and technologies made/acquired over the centuries, but it's message has not, and will not, lose "relevance."

But like I said, I owe you a drink.
