Didn't see any obvious evidence of two technologies but I sort of assume they are there---
1) "Bubblers" under the bow to put air under the ice before the weight of the ship cracks it and pushes it aside (ice with air under it is easier to break)
2) bow design that take the weight of the ship up above and onto the ice to crush from above (complements #1)...

Vancouver ports never need icebreakers. It gets roughly the same winter temperatures as Seattle, WA. Is the OP suggesting it's frozen 6 months of the year? That is utterly false. Check a map!

Arctic container ship sails through ice
I like how near the end the guy says "whoa" and backs up a bit as the ice beneath him moves, like it suddenly dawns on him that I'M STANDING ON FROZEN OCEAN AND THERE IS A FRIGGIN ICEBREAKER FREIGHTER MOVING THROUGH LESS THAN 50 YARDS FROM ME!
Arctic container ship sails through ice
Christ that's amazing. The bow is completely out of the water. It must take so much fuel to do that. And it seems like it would tear the hull to shreds. I didn't know that any regular shipping routes went through ice like this.
edit: wikipedia has a good article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icebreaker
