Chaser's War On Everything: Westboro Baptist Church

rebuilder says...

These are the people who, when Finland elected the current (female) President, Tarja Halonen, said they would come to Helsinki and protest by burning the Finnish flag as a metaphor for how nations that embrace sin, like Sodom and Gomorrah did, will burn in flames. Presumably this was because Halonen had previously served as the president of SETA, the largest gay, lesbian and trans- rights group in Finland. (A fact, by the way, I don't recall anyone making an issue of in Finland itself.) They never showed up though.

You quoted some statistics, and this makes his argument invalid? Then you say, "Ive had this argument before". Appealing to past arguments as though they make you right, appealing to false authority.

Link to sources, bibliography. Until then your argument is unsustainable.

Your argument, is a very gentle Non Sequitur. It has no context, other than you had this discussion with another member. Also, linking to research does nothing unless you have good thoughts to go along with your quotes. Hence the confusion I have here.

Before you attack an argument make sure that you have your sources posted. Here is what I have from a Lt. Col. Dave Grossman Army Ret. Quoted from his book, titled On killing. "Lt. Col. Grossman a former army ranger and paratrooper taught psychology at west point is currently professor of Military Science at Arkansas State University."

The statistics are in here, and found by Interpol.

EDIT: I do realize that your comment is flame bait.

By the way, this was really a long drawn out appeal to authority. And also a plug for the book because I think it is good!

Lyrics "Do The Whirlwind":

She said you'd given up,
Your folks told me you should be left alone,
On a mountain top knocking the aeroplanes down with stones.
Do the whirlwind and carry the hope that stings all night long,
Don't abandon him 'cause he quivers when he hears your song,

Believe me, it's safe to see.
At least be confused about right and wrong,
Plan to settle down,
Over the moon under the sun.
Do the whirlwind and shotgun the seat that beats that beats
Hanging on to the one you love
To keep keepin', sleepin', dreamin' on.

Folks given up under the quivers and lines,
You do the whirlwind,
Don't abandon,
Get a handle of yourself, son.

Thanks for all the replies =) They made me feel better, and I I got a lot of good suggestions. The audio book idea sounded great, I never thought of that! I think I'll bring either an ipod, or maybe even try to see if I can snatch Net's DS, or whatever portable he has (obviously I have never touched it myself since I don't even know wich one it is, duh..)

I'll think about the Dramanine/Xanax thing.. I'll have 2 very quick plane changes in Stockholm and Helsinki, I don't want to be too stoned/sleepy/drunk to figure out where to go for the next leg =)

Though I have to mention: the only time I was not afraid during a whole flight was one December flight from NY to Cincinnati. We took off at right after sunset, and all the lights of NY were fantastic. Then, it was a totally clear night and it looked like the whole country was lit up with Christmas lights, and I could just watch them the whole flight.

When we approached Cincinnati, we had to circle a bit, and we flew over Downtown Cincinnati. TWICE! I could even see where the Zoo was with its huge light display. I was actually disappointed when we started to head towards the airport and landing.. I wanted yell 'Keep going! This is fantastic!' =)

So, I guess if I just get distracted enough, I'll forget the fear and enjoy the ride.. It should be fun... =)

Again, thanks for the replies, and for making me feel better.

Russian Red Army Choir - Kalinka Kalinka

Abducted says...

Agreed with Octopussy, it was Leningrad Cowboys with the Red Army choir.
This concert was held right in the heart of Helsinki, the other one was held in Berlin. The same Red Army had marched into Finland in the second world war.

The band is from Finland and they are sort of making parody of the Soviet Union! This and the choir singing with them in Sweet Home Alabama is so ironic and so nice.

17% tax much? Behold: The Finnish taxes!

As an average Joe with no kids and single living in Helsinki and earning 33600€ a year you pay 24,5% in taxes.
Cap is at a friendly 60%. That includes Municipal tax, Progressive state tax, church tax and healthcare payment. (in order of hugeness)

On top of this 22% VAT on everything. And special taxation on tobacco and gas, which makes up about 75% of the 1,4€/liter price. but at least there aren't any road charges.

And no, all this doesn't give free health care, but it's capped at 600€/person per year. I guess it's free if you are broke tho, seeing as you are getting monies from the social anyways.

so whatever your doing, isnt working.

now, we have deer here, and i've no inclination to go kill them. If you said to protect against bear then maybe i could see the argument, but then a handgun isnt going to cut it anyhow. And arguming that why arnt knifves and blunt instruments banned ? why should they be ? their job isnt to kill. The floor will kill you if you hit it hard enough.

besides which (after anouther ten seconds of digging - right from your own doj.
