#1 ranked in the world...I'll be Kasparov could come outa retirement and destroy this kid. Young whipper snappers. Also the FIDE rating is sort of messed up in certain ways. This guy though can play 10 games at once not looking at the board, that's a special sort of autism right there, pretty neat.

He has played Kasparov before, as he mentions at the end of the clip. They played two matches in 2004. One was a draw and Kasparov won the other one. Of course, Carlsen was only 13 back then, so I think he'd have a considerably better shot now. Anyway, very few chess players can hold a candle to Kasparov in his prime, but Carlsen is one of them, even though their playing styles are very different. Whether his career will be as impressive as Kasparov's remains to be seen, but he's definitely had a good start: youngest world number 1 ever, second highest FIDE ranking ever. He needs to win the World Championship now, but I'm sure that's coming. Incidentally, Kasparov actually coached Carlsen for a little while.

Fuck off with all this helpful information! Anyways Kasparov has been retired for a long time, so yeah Carlsen would probably take him. I still think FIDE rankings are bullshit, the best chess master ever as Fischer dammit!

Fischer was ridiculously dominant in his heyday, but comparing players across eras is difficult. Chess has become so much more professionalized now. The players train a lot harder, and more importantly they have computers to help them train, so in general players at the top levels now have a much tighter game than their counterparts in the 70s. It's kind of like tennis: if you judge based on dominance over his peers, Rod Laver is the greatest tennis player of all time, but I'm sure Federer, Nadal or Djokovic could absolutely spank Laver in his prime.

Still, you'll get no argument from me if you believe Fischer is a strong contender for the "greatest ever" title. I still prefer Kasparov, but I might be biased because Kasparov isn't a racist lunatic. It's good to know that it's possible for a person to be a transcendent chess genius and still be a functional human being.

So Is America/Israel/Etc... Going Into Iran? (Military Talk Post)

I made changes to the Sift Talk to help make it more "on-topic" for the 'Sift-Talk'. I could have done more, but this is what I will settle on for this Talk post. I hope you appreciate that I decided to actively take the demanded advice for what I thought VERY incorrectly was a topical forum with strong multimedia applications.

I was wrong! I learned. I changed and added, so please re-look over some of it; the videos are VERY much worth your time and will help inform you of the whole time table in periods of two years at a time. BTW, if someone can find me a very good 2012 documentary PLEASE post it so I may add it so it can be complete!

I hope you appreciate what I've done and that I went against my own comment, went off-topic (yes, I know that post had a razor's edge to it, but it was supposed to).

Here is to getting back on topic and to satisfying some of the demands required; next time I will aim it much better so that it targets our community yet still asks these hard questions.

It really would be nice to have a general board/forum on the Sift to stop the miscommunication. Sorry to those offended, if you read this anyway, you can now un-ignore me now...

It's Time ... (Sift Talk Post)

Fletch says...

I'm late to this thread and didn't read all the comments. Sorry.

Only a couple things:

- When assigning channels for a submitted video, it would be REALLY nice if hovering over a channel for a second or so brought up a COMPLETE and SPECIFIC description of EXACTLY what kind of video warrants said channel flag. Also, when "nochannel" is invoked, the subsequent siftbot comment links to the applicable section of the FAQ which contains NO HELPFUL INFORMATION on proper channel assignments. A complete list somewhere WITH DESCRIPTIONS would also be helpful.

- Sift Lounge. I want to be able to see who is present without having to join. Hovering over the Sift Lounge link should bring up a list of current... loungers. Also, it would be awesome to be able to have a private conversation within the lounge (if this is already possible... nm). Multiple rooms would be cool, but private conversations/rooms should be limited to two members as a clique countermeasure.

Omit needless words (Blog Entry by jwray)

The written language needn't be identical to that which is spoken. Redundancy helps information transfer. We are not very good listeners- by adding redundancy we give context to the other parts of speech. So much the better if in doing so, our speech might turn into poetry.

There is beauty to be found both in Hemingway's economy of language and in Shakespeare's purple prose.

Maddow: "GOP Platform is to Decrease American Workers Pay"

volumptuous says...

>> ^blankfist:
She's an idiot.
[edit] She's the Democrat's Bill O'Reilly.

Except that she doesn't knowingly lie, nor does she tell her guests to shut-up, nor cut their microphone's off. She also doesn't have interest in the "culture war", the "war on xmas", and she doesn't believe in torture. She also happens to like our constitution and bill of rights.

So yeah, other than those minor discrepancies, she's EXACTLY like Bill-O.

And Blanky: How is she an "idiot"? She's shining a spotlight on the lies these senators are spewing. She's busting them for lying, and making plenty of money in the process. She is actually helping inform the citizenry of this country about the dark, dangerous and nefarious deeds of certain senators who are milking us of billions and billions of taxpayers cash.

These are the "estate tax" folks. These are the "PATRIOT ACT" fools. These are the torturers of citizens, the cheerleaders of the NSA, and the mongers of war.

And Maddow is the "idiot"??????

Absolutely. One of the best ones is dead. I'll go through them all more thoroughly, but you should put this into your playlist to replace the discarded dupe.

Any video in the brain channel should provide some info about how brains or minds work. Basically, the idea is to filter out demonstrations of mental behavior and include explanations of it. I didn't want the channel to be a collection of card tricks, optical illusions, and Derren Brown style mind tricks. Manipulating a sensory system (however wonderfully surprising), doesn't necessarily help describe the system. Of course, certain demonstrations of mental or neurological activity do help define their function. A behavioral change arising after some specific neuropatholgy, for instance, at the very least gives some indication of how that neural system is organized.

Any vid describing animal, or synthetic, minds and brains is welcome, so long as it helps inform the viewer about how such systems work.

Just wondering if there's anything in http://www.videosift.com/playlists/schmawy/Animal-Intelligence that would qualify for your channel?
