North Korean Television Announces Death Of Kim Jong Il

Bradaphraser says...

I had totally expected a report about how Kim Jong Il had seen a meteor heading for his train, jumped from it, caught it and redirected it, giving his life to save everyone on the train. Since they claim he just died of "fatigue," it makes me wonder if he was assassinated or something. North Korean journalism is of the quality of Baghdad Bob.

At least Kim Jong died never having to take more than one swing at a golf ball to get it in the hole...

Myron the blind dog plays fetch!

What the heck would require you to remove a dog's eyes at four months?
Upvote for the overcoming challenges bit, but geez, poor dog and stuff.

Blind since birth, the talented dog found a forever home four years ago with 41-year-old Wood and her husband, Terry. After Wood lost a previous dog to cancer, a friend told her about a "dumped dog" that had just given birth, so Wood decided to rescue a puppy and picked Myron "because he looked cross-eyed."

But after just two weeks of getting to know her new guy, Wood learned that Myron was blind. Within three months, Myron developed glaucoma and his eyes began to swell to the size of golf balls; surgery to remove his eyeballs was Myron's only option to alleviate his pain.

After the operation, "he was very happy," Wood says. "His confidence came back tenfold."

Hail Storm Destroys Roof on University of Calgary Greenhouse

Tingles says...

That hail storm a couple weeks ago caused so much damage to cars that all repair shops are booked solid through September. The hail were the size of golf balls. Damage estimates for these cars range anywhere from $300 to several thousand dollars.

Physics: Neat little demonstration of relative motion

at what point does height have a negative effect on the situation ?

Probably when sufficient air resistance is introduced.
timeshift

I think the greater concern is the friction slowing down the cart (which is likely much more significant than the drag on the golf ball from wind resistance). Notice that the ball already lands towards the leading edge of the cup because the cart has slowed down a little bit.

If the golfball left the cart at high enough velocity then it would never come back.
but if it left at an even higher velocity, then it might just come back before it left.
Basically, conducting science is always about making sure that you materialise an equal amount of golfballs to the ones you lose...or there will be TERRIBLE consequences for the time space continuum...and thats why this is demonstrated at MIT.

It's when the golf ball is on the tee as WELL as in the hole that fucks me up.

Golf ball deformation at 70,000 fps (!)

csnel3 says...

This is ridiculous, it's clearly not a real golf ball. If you put a golf ball in a hydraulic press and apply tonnage it will pop like a grape before it gets this flat. Just smashing it real fast will not change the outcome. Cool effect in the vid. though.

Now think that two cars both going 75 mph hitting each other head on would do pretty much the same thing to the humans inside! Yay for safety!
actually 2 cars both going 75mps hitting each other is equal to one car hitting a wall at 75mph. mythbusters did an episode on this very thing like a week or two ago

shot at a target at 61 m/s (which is about 150 Mph?) (Americans should start using the metric system.. )

More like 136 mph. I don't think that sequence shows slightly less deformation, I think that's vastly less. Makes me doubt this video actually.

indeed, these picture sequences show, what i would expect, a more realistic ball deformation. golf balls don't feel soft and bouncy enough to flatten out like in the video.
