I saw you were the only one that upvoted the Rainmaker's tunes. Bob Walkenhorst and the boys are Kansas City natives. They came so close to really hitting it big. Their first album, The Rainmakers, was critically acclaimed, but the follow-up album sputtered and ruined their chances. I love their lyrics,

The story of KP's handle?

Way back when I first started using the internet I came up with the screen name "neptunetitan". You see, I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd, and the first song (Astronomy Domine) on their first album (Piper At The Gates Of Dawn) has a lyric at the end of the first verse that goes:

Neptune, Titan
Stars can frighten

So that's where neptunetitan came from. As I started opening up more accounts on various sites over the years, I discovered that other completely unoriginal assholes had stolen "neptunetitan". Therefore I sort of Greekified the Roman names, converting Neptune to Poseidon, and the generic Titan to the king of the Titans, Kronos. Plus if you substitute "Neptune, Titan" with "Kronos, Poseidon", the verse still sort of rhymes in the song.

And you thought it was going to be an interesting story, didn't you?

An excellent band, with a strange history. Supposedly, they scored porn films while recording a good portion of their first album, under a Soho lingerie shop.

Such a great song, and one that I've taken for granted for a while ... in reading up on it, I learned that this whole (first) album was recorded in ten days (as Dylan was about to leave on a tour)!? Such talent.

Got to see him live a few years- great voice and great presence, but you'd think he might get up and dance or something... I mean geez, the guy just sat there through his whole performance!

Dude, I love her voice too, but like I said, that first album was really hard to top.....every song is wonderful-I got Blind, and it was a letdown....their songwriting I suppose....kinna fell off....are they still together???

Loved their first album, then their songwriting bit the big one, and all they had left was whasserfaces, whiny, lilting, swallow some more anti-depressants voice.....

Thank you for posting this. Sugarcubes was one of the first albums to make me realize that there were better things than what was typically being played on the radio back then. Thanks for the memories.

i'll go along with the general idea that it will get easier to link things and there will be new ways of finding relevant stuff.

but when people say "imagine a world of web X.0" i get suspicious.

I think the problem is, the human brain has certain hardwired limits (that take thousands of years to change) and computers are just too powerful. Also, the last thing I want is to tell my friends exactly where I am all the time, and I probably don't need to tell future employers exactly what I think about politics and religion.

Also, real life is still more interesting, and if you don't lead a real life you end up outputting boring stuff that there's no point linking to. Internet dreamers never really talk about how this stuff gets created in the first place.

Good example: musicians do a great first album, drawn from their whole life experience, and then spend 12 months on the road having no experiences other than the tour bus and some parties, then they write second album, and it sucks a bit.
