F-18 Super Hornet bursts into flame on landing.

jmd says...

That fire did not want to go out! That aside, I am pretty sure everyone on deck is trained and prepared for this on every single landing. The deck of a ship is not the best place for an out of control fire. Also the place is small, a general fire alarm with emergency crews to deck pretty much nets you a tidy fireman force in seconds. I kinda wonder why the fire truck stopped, it shoulda kept going along the side and blasted that huge sucker up the hind end of the plane and not sit there washing the windows. Trust me, if that thing blows, you arnt saving the pilot from where you are now.

Firemen and Police in Sweden attacked by Immigrant Youth

Kreegath says...

I wouldn't describe the parts of the city heavy in immigrant residents as a ghetto. It's a poorer area no doubt, with lots of unemployment and higher in crime. But at the same time, immigrants aren't confined there, nor are they placed there against their will.

There's of course the cold reality that the cheap rental prices of apartments in the area along with the relative closeness to others of their respective native culture makes it much more attractive to reside in than other places. However, the welfare agency who supplies people with welfare money does regularly hold free-of-charge courses on language, traditions, integration and society, aswell as doing regular followups on job searches and further education. The bureau also works with the employment service to get people jobs, and the employment service in turn holds courses in interview techniques, CV writing, job searching and starting ones own business, for all who are interested. Also free of charge. They also try to help people get into various different educational bodies or start their own business if that's their perogative.

So the help is there. It's a matter of taking it into ones own hands and actually take the trouble of accepting the help that is offered. It's the apathy that comes with unemployment, initial feelings of alienation and not venturing out into the discomfort zone outside ones apartment that breaks the integration chain for the vast majority of families who turn out the way these people in the video did. The government can't force them to take that step, it can only supply the tools necessary to take it. At some point there has to be some form of initiative on the part of the person, and the majority of immigrants handle it exceptionally, which is why I don't believe closing our borders further would do any good. These might have had some very bad experiences that made them so bitter and hostile, but eventually they will have to rise above that and actually become part of the society that has made their life possible, otherwise I don't want them here. Not because they claim to be muslim and not because they're second generation immigrants, but because they're vandalising, robbing and generally scorning productive citizens who've done nothing against these people.
Also, attacking the fire department and police officials for no other reason than coming to help put out a fire or stop gang fights in gradeschool doesn't help their case.

Situation Critical - Hollywood Shootout

NordlichReiter says...

Inaccurate, all guns cannot fire non stop. Over heating, and bore temperature will cause warping. Eventually the gun will not be able to fire any more.

This does not diminish they're effectiveness, but their accuracy.

School Bus Driver Chokes Mentally Disabled Child

alizarin says...

Throwing a can at the back of a drivers head could easily cause a crash and kill a bunch of people. Am I wrong or did she just get the attention of a violent kid so he wouldn't do it again? I wonder if she would have been fired for stopping the bus instead.

The lowest person in the organization always pays the highest price =(

Ohh, there's a whole lot of SOPs to go through on that one. If you really want to know, I can point you to the technical manual (it's not hard to understand) and it will tell you exactly what needs to be done. (do a search for misfire in the pdf document)

but basically it depends on how hot the tube is. It will get hot from constant firing, and isn't really much of a problem to worry about unless you're in some deep shit and have been firing non-stop. The thermal indicator is green, yellow and red for cold, warm and hot. I've never seen it past low warm.

So basically what happens after you pull the string and nothing happens is that you pull it three more times. If still nothing happens, you try another primer. If still nothing happens, it's the firing mechanism or the firing pin. those need to be replaced. If they do need to be replaced, you just take the powder out of the tube (considering a cold tube) and replace it and fire away.

What do you do with an arty misfire anyway -- wait 60 seconds and then open the breech and slide the shell back out?

In reply to this comment by MarineGunrock:
Ha! "Hangfire" - I haven't heard that in a while.

Building the World Trade Center Towers (18:11)

Par says...

Well, let's take this one point at a time. I will address your subsequent statements (the fact that the towers were designed to withstand an airliner impact; the claim that the fires had stopped burning; etc.) in due course.

Before that though, given that no one's claiming that fire alone caused the collapses, pointing out that fire alone was unlikely to have been sufficient cause is simply a straw man argument. So, do you now acknowledge that the claim is not that fire alone was the cause, but instead that the cause was a combination of airliner/debris damage and fire?
