Allow me to attempt to be dispassionately clearer.
I did not intend to be dismissive or disrespectful to YOU. I did intend to be dismissive and disrespectful to the beliefs the video was attempting to put forth as fact.
Others have provided factual links/info to support the position that this camp does not deserve respect or an ear any longer, and I would point to the video's obvious deficiencies in understanding statistics necessary to even make the claim it made, which was that the 'missing' data set COULD change the results. (perhaps they didn't say "would" change the results, only strongly implied it...either way would be wrong).
I am disrespectful of those that continue to further conspiracy theories about 'evil scientists' that 'fake/fudge/hide data and science' to further their careers (as scientists), as if that EVER happens in the scientific community. Peer review denies that possibility, and gets those people/theories removed from the 'scientific community', as has repeatedly happened with this issue. Even the 'scientist' that put forth this idea in the first place dismissed it as wrong well over a decade ago, but by then many people were so emotionally invested in the (now disproven) theory that they ignore anything that disputes their belief (it's a belief because new facts that dispute it are ALWAYS ignored). I get upset and insulted by the continued dismissal of all science to further ANY agenda, and that's what this video looked like to me.
I'm sorry you took such offence, but I still don't really understand why.
EDIT:Could it be the 'again' when I asked if it was a 'kneejerk reaction to someone who disagreed with you'? perhaps that was unwarranted. Sorry.

...it follows then that perhaps I mirror your predicament and do not properly understand your comment. Upon rereading yours I still find it oddly fragmented as you obviously do mine.

However, the references to deficiencies in my character and process appear clear.

I will reread my response and you may do so likewise with yours...or not.

In any case my opinion of you remains intact and as I would prefer it. However, I am always willing to learn.

Kids chorus singing "Still Alive" from PORTAL

RadHazG says...

The song is a good one, but it does sound a bit... odd coming from kids. I personally wouldn't care if my kid was up there and I would *hope* that any parent with half a brain who looked up the story behind it would think likewise.
Buuuuuut I can almost categorically guarantee that some parent is going to see this, hear "except the ones who are dead" and "and the science gets done and you make a neat gun for the people who are still alive" and instantly assume its about evil scientists murdering people with a new gun and how awful that these people are making children sing this! Or something equally supercilious overblown or silly.

Identical strangers; twins separated at birth

dgandhi says...

Was there a real pragmatic reason to separate them? Consider the possibility that they would have been relegating to playing foster home ping-pong their entire childhoods vs the supportive adoptive families they ended up with.

Since they say, in the interview, that it was not done expressly for the study it seems that the "evil scientist" argument fails.

I would like to know the variance in actual adoption placement numbers before and after they started this separation policy. And how the "siblings as a group" rules effect adoption placement since '85.

Hey! Somehow I missed your reply from, like, a month ago. Anyway, Yes! Great shows (no pun intended). I remember them very well. They also used the Bugs intro for the 90125 tour, which was the very first major concert I went to as a teenager. Cool stage, great sound and a great light and laser how. They were my absolute favorite band at the time, so it was a big deal (even though I was rather disappointed with the non-Howe albums and missed the Roger Dean graphics).

Rock on!

That was such an awesome concert, wasn't it?

Ha ha! I was also at one of those YES shows (at Meadowlands arena in New Jersey). Same enthusiastic reaction there (and here). For me, that is THE classic bugs episode. Just found it on YouTube and thought to submit it here, but too late...

It's one of everyone's favorites, JAPR.

Personal anecdote: Right before I went to bootcamp (Navy) in 1987 I saw Yes in concert during their 'Big Generator' tour. They had no opening act, but they ran a couple of cartoons before they started. They showed two cartoons...

Bugs Bunny and the Evil Scientist get high on ether

marinara says...

n Hair-Raising Hare, Bugs finds himself trapped in the castle of an "evil scientist", who this time is a caricature of Vincent Price....

The cartoon's title is a reference to the line "Water, water, everywhere / Nor any drop to drink" from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

How is fish's weight that Dora cat can carry?

maudlin says...

plastiquemonkey, is that cartoon the source for the "Dora cat" reference? I used exactly the same title that was used for the original YouTube post just because I loved the oddity of the translation, but I couldn't Google any reference to "Dora" and "cat" that made any sense in context.

ETA: Wait, I Googled the cartoon you named, found some leads, and finally found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doraemon

"The Mysterious Thief Dorapan - He is a mysterious thief from France. He has a wand with a jewel on it used to change the material of one object into another (eg. paper --> water, rock --> china, etc.). He fears the dark and dogs. He likes eating dorayaki with cheese. Though often misunderstood for a "villain", he always steals for a reason, espsecially to help the poor. He was originally an enemy of The Doraemons, but that was because an evil scientist ordered him to be one. The Mysterious Thief Dorapan later banded with The Doraemons to defeat the evil scientist."

So we've got the theme from one cartoon used in the show, and a loveable rogue from another cartoon used in the clip's title?
