Who knew metal milling machine could be such fun?

vex says...

I work in a CNC machine shop programming lathes. That isn't aluminum they are machining. It's definitely steel, probably 4340.

Carbide inserts are more than capable of cutting metal without coolant. Well formed chips absorb and carry most of the heat away. You start to run into problems with gummy materials (like aluminum) that form a built up edge on the cutter. In this case high pressure coolant can be used to help break the long stringy chips and keep them from sticking to the insert.

One case where using coolant can be detrimental to tool life is when machining a part with an interrupted cut. Think of sliding your finger over a surface with a bunch of holes in it. Your finger switches back and forth between making contact with the surface and gliding over empty space. In the machining world, this motion would cause abrupt transient temperature changes, and coolant can sometimes exacerbate the problem and cause the carbide insert to crack or chip.

(pedantry) I would hesitate to call that machine a mill. You can see the machine switching freely between rotating the part to provide the cutting force (turning) to rotating the tool (milling). It's more akin to a horizontal turning center with a milling spindle built in as well. Pretty awesome stuff! (/pedantry)

Pacific Sun Cruise Liner in Heavy Seas - CCTV Footage

Porksandwich says...

I don't understand why the industrial section of the ship is not secured. I can understand the forklift not being secured...but big metal cabinets and cages? I mean I doubt they are moving that shit around during the cruise...they might unload it when they dock at which time they can release them.

The tables and chairs....that could be turned into a dance floor maybe, so I can understand not wanting a bunch of holes in the floors and mounted tables/chairs. However, there was only maybe 2 people I saw on the video that looked like they were crew and looked like they had any experience with how to handle that situation...by which I mean they seemed to have "sea legs" and didn't stumble around and braced when appropriate. So given there's a general lack of experience when things get bad, you'd think they would focus more on making sure things were bolted down and when appropriate have smaller sections where stuff couldn't move as much and people could actually get from one wall to another before the ship tilted back.

Wonder if anyone died during this, it'd be pretty easy to crack your head on a counter top. I mean it's nice to see a fancy boat and all, but I think you could give up a little to not have your face bashed in on a pole when the boat begins to rock.

Putting faith in its place

>> ^Nithern:How do you make this narrator tell others he's full of crap? Simple: Violence. You make anyone believe they are going to die, and die painfully, most will do and say what you wish. If you torture someone by any of the number of things we've seen in human history (including the last 8 by Mr. Bush), they will do and say what you wish. So, go ahead and make your logical arguement all you want, but without wisdom, you may soon find the flawed thinking in your mind. Funny how the concept of 'wisdom' comes from religion, eh?

So, threatening people with a violent death if they don't believe is somehow irrefutable proof that you're right and your god does exist?

Wow, I'm convinced thank you! </sarcasm>

Or, are you simply saying the maker of this video should be brutally murdered because he doesn't agree with you and he just punched a bunch of holes in your beliefs? Yeah, that's reasonable... and WISE! Thank you religion! Someone should update Oxford on this whole wisdom is due to religious viewpoint...
