On Edward Snowden (Blog Entry by dag)

gorgonheap says...

The whole thing seems juvenile to me. It's not like it's news that the US government has been spying on it's own people. What angers me is that they keep trying to hide it. I think Snowden reminded us of what they were doing. And I sure hope it works as a wake-up call that the rules of the game have changed.

It's near impossible to hide anything anymore in this age where you can chat around the world in a matter of seconds. And that can be used to disrupt violent activity that harms others as well as unite the world to fight injustice (also you can order pizza too, which is pretty amazing.)

welcome to your indoctrination-have a seat

I can agree with the few first minutes, and that that the video portrays what definitely is the overall intent toward our education, but so much of this video is flawed it’s clearly made for those who are already inept at critical, independent thought.
As much as such a wake-up call is necessary for the populace of the world, I can't celebrate anything that just tries to manipulate the manipulable to their side.

One Pissed Off Democrat in Michigan Speaks Up

snoozedoctor says...

The "global economy" is the wake up call everybody in the US is thus far ignoring. You aren't competing, necessarily, with the guy down the street, or the workers in another State anymore. In the modern economy the US is competing against workers who are willing to work harder for less pay. You can ride your Hostess Twinkie Union to unemployment, or you can "work for less", as the mantra goes.
"All that corporations care about is the bottom line" is another mantra I love. These aren't charities. The term "corporation" is thrown around like it doesn't represent a person, or group of persons, that are trying to advance their lot in life. It's not out of a sense of altruism that the baker bakes his bread. All that being said, workers deserve a safe workplace. That should be accomplished through legislation, and it has been.

Mordhaus said:

I cannot speak to the laws in Canada, but in the US companies are required by law to provide as safe a work environment as possible. The unions did help to put these laws into place many years ago, but the laws are there now.

In your example, you clearly show that young, untrained people are able to make almost double the amount you did up until your recent job. In addition to this, they have very good job security and benefits. This is great for them, but as you said, if you don't want to support the union due to your own beliefs, you are going to be forced to work somewhere else. It does not matter if you are more skilled or a harder worker, simply because you are unwilling to join a union.

You also lay the blanket claim that the workers benefiting from these socialistic practices are not affecting the profit of the company in anyway, nor the output to the shareholders. You do not mention the costs passed along to the consumer of the final products, but lets overlook that for a second. You do not have the figures to show that the shareholders are making millions or billions, nor do you appear to have a basic understanding of what profits a shareholder gets from the net profit of a company. Typically the main profit a shareholder gets is the value of the stock increasing, not dividends paid to them from the net profit. Stock can increase in a union-based company, but it typically does so at a slower rate than a non-union company. This can also affect the solvency of the company, as it is harder to get loans or sell more stock when it is such a slow return.

Now to go back to the point I mentioned about the passing on of costs, the people primarily subsidizing your example employees are the people buying the products that they produce. Companies prefer to pass on these costs to the consumer if they can, simply because the nature of a corporation is to show a profit. No profit or small profits lead to the situation I mentioned above with the stock price and the desirability of the stock. So customers are paying for these extra wages, and may be forced to do so for some time, UNTIL products come in from non-union companies and undercut the price. Then you have a crashing stock price and or closing of the company, all because of an anachronistic union catering to unskilled or semi-skilled employees.

The simple point is, unions provide job security that should not exist in the type of jobs they typically are involved in. They provide wages and benefits far higher than those type of jobs should generally have. This is great for the people in the union, but not so great for everyone else. Nor is it sustainable in today's global economy, because unless your government closes it's economic borders to imports, there will be another country that will do the work for FAR less and undercut your product.

News Anchor Responds to Viewer Email Calling Her "Fat"

CaptainPlanet says...

hey scannex, i wish i'd been here to back u up through this, yikes! big props on the civility of your rhetoric - and for anyone who thinks mentioning a weight issue is out of line, i would suggest that this thread itself could yield a positive result in someones behavior. I know it's made me rethink my responsibility to my health.
the valuable thing here is the discourse, and valuable discourse isn't always easy to swallow. i see a lot of people on this thread getting heated, and have to wonder if theyr not just slinging their personal issues into the mix.
so, what we dont know is how this anchor has been working to fix her problem, but from the tone of the email it sounds as if she has not had much success of it. if on the one hand she Has been trying to improve, this may serve as a call to re-examine those efforts. if otherwise, i would consider it a wake-up call in the nicest sense.

also, please nobody assault anyone for suggesting positive lifestyle choices, Even if those suggestions are unsolicited.

One of these used to sound about every 4-6 months when I was growing up in L.A. in the 70's. Never knew where it was located but man was that fucking thing loud. If the guy wants to take it apart to see how it works, more power to him, but I really don't see the use of buying something like this other than to be a complete dick to your neighbors.

Did someone say complete dick to your neighbours ? ?

Wow, is he in for a wake up call when he blows out his back.

Yeah, to me it looked like he was trying to snap his fibula or tibia. Or, he was going all out and trying to take out his back. Maybe, he has one hell of work week in front of him and wants to just sit it out; forever.

The man clearly wears a shirt saying: "Don't PISS IN MY cereal! I AM A MOTHERFUCKER!!!"

how Jon Stewart would've handled the racist C-Span caller

burdturgler says...

I watched you do it.
My post was made. I refreshed the page. You weren't here.
I edited some grammar and spelling. Refreshed. You weren't here.
I was reading the post again and, after a couple minutes or so I refreshed again because I am an obsessive compulsive asshole and .. there you were. I re-read some of the shit that was said, refreshed again, and BAM .. basically a whole new post from you edited in to the original.

Whatever, nothing in your edit really changed anything. You still are saying the same racist shit even now.

Saying that black people in New York sound differently than white people in New York is racist. That's exactly what you said and it's exactly the premise behind the racist caller to c-span. Look, I'm done arguing with you. You continue to say that, just like the c-span caller, you could identify black people over the phone. Maybe you're one of those people that doesn't realize he's a racist. Well, here's your wake up call. Take a good look at the situation, and at yourself. You go out of your way to say you can identify them. No matter where you go, you will be able to identify black people just by hearing them speak. Most black people can be identified (as having blackness) by the sound of their voice.

"God forbid anything at all might correlate with skin color, especially something as trivial as an accent!
Skin color doesn't have an accent. Neither does poverty.
I've realized there are certain arguments on this site that, despite their worth, just go nowhere. So I'm done with this one.
I am quoting you this time though.
>> ^jwray:

1. I made all my edits BEFORE your response was posted, less than 20 minutes after the original post. So try refreshing the page and giving it a minute. No one writes a perfect post the first time through. It's always better to improve a post than to leave a shitty post be.
2. Acknowledging the obvious fact that there are different accents that tend to connote race, class, education, social cohort, or country of origin does NOT in any way make someone a racist or an asshole. I never said or implied ALL or even 95%+ of black people speak in any particular way. But there are some accents whose speakers seem to be 95%+ black. There are many black people who cannot be identified as such by their voice. But most can. There also a few percent of white people who might be misidentified as black by their voice, as well.
3. There is a test of the proposition. Gather MP3s of random white and black people from streets all across the country, and see who can identify the skin colors of the speakers correctly, just by listening to the MP3s. I bet I could do 90% accuracy.
5. I am not in any way, and never was, defending the caller. I'm merely pointing out where your ideological conviction flies in the face of reality -- God forbid anything at all might correlate with skin color, especially something as trivial as an accent!
6. I am not a racist and never have been.

The girl who silenced the world for 6 minutes

Don_Juan says...

Yeah!! What fostertron said 1 year 6 months ago!!! Wake-up call!! Conscious, awake exposure of reality!! Are we truly proud of our species? Will we successfully evolve beyond our present primitive state?? Will we eventually identify ourselves as a species we respect?? I, for one, hope we will grow up, begin to tottle, and stop crawling. Personally, I believe Jesus was gay! I am NOT gay, but if a woman is involved, I CAN be Bi. Is this wrong? Does this have anything to do with the initial subject?
