So, what happens when the world doesn't end?

Mikus_Aurelius says...

Opposition to the slaughter of animals is an emotional reaction. Either you feel it or you don't. It may be that working in a slaughterhouse for a day would shock people into feeling differently about it. However I don't think we can embrace that as an omnivore hypocrisy test for two reasons.

1) If they stayed at the job for 6 months, they might get over their shock and resume their earlier belief that killing animals for food is perfectly acceptable. There was a time when 95% of the western population had killed an animal for meat, and there was no mass conversion to veganism.

2) More fundamentally, all humans are emotional beings. In a jarring situation, we can all be manipulated into feeling some way that we didn't feel 10 minutes earlier. Go watch some tough guys crying at the end of a romantic comedy. Do they believe Reese Witherspoon has found true love? No, but Hollywood has figured out that if you play swelling violin music, people get emotional, no matter how contrived the story is. I don't think we can consider the reactions to such shocks, particularly as a result of deliberate manipulation, as a true insight into a person's character. Instead, we should see how they feel when they've had time to step back and reflect on the experience.

The video author might decry this as "rationalizing" our emotional failings. However, emotions are beyond our control. It's impossible to feel the wrong way, because there is no choice in the matter. You feel how you feel. It's a good thing that humans have mechanisms to construct their identities apart from their emotional reactions. Otherwise we'd be even more enslaved to them and more easily manipulated than we are now. Is examining and selectively discarding our spur of the moment emotional reactions cognitive dissonance? If so, we should be putting cognitive dissonance in the water supply, like fluoride.

consider what the reaction of Sift omnivores would be if they were forced to slaughter their own meat. Even those claiming they feel no moral imperative to respect the suffering of other animals might wince just a bit as that calf calls for it's mother in its last moments of consciousness.

Epic Violin Girl

A Girl Plays DDR while playing the violin at the same time

I'd really like her to see her try this on a higher difficulty to a high RPM song like Max 300. Right now this as impressive as watching someone playing the violin while jogging, it's nice to see her play the notes according to the notes of the game though

How much of the population would u estimate treats their kids like this though?
The sad fact is the major determining factor in who will win the survival war is reproductive rates.

Agree with him... as a father of four, I agree with him.
Now... I'm not of the school of 'no tv, no video games, no fast food'... but I am of the school of IN MODERATION!
And any time one of the kids shows signs of being a little dependant on the video games, it's unplugged and put away for a week or more.
I fricken HATE the biscuits (BBQ shapes, pizza shapes, all that sort of thing) which you can just smell as soon as you open a box of them. The ridiculously overpowering smell of flavour enhancer 621, chemicals, chemicals, chemicals.
Our kids love fruit, there's always a bowl, we have 2 plum trees, an apple and a lemon tree and are growing our first crop of veggies in our veggie patch. Our kids always have a selection of raw vegetables with their meals.
When I see parents who always give their kids cordial or soft drink, or... oh this annoys me... if they give them milk they always add flavour to it, so it's strawberry or chocolate milk... ARGH! WATER and Milk are the two drinks our kids get at home.
But yeah, not militant on the TV or games etc, I have great fun sitting down with the kids to watch a movie, or playing a Wii game with them. I had those experiences as a kid, so why shouldn't they? But I also had time limits, as do they.

Oh, absolutely, he's bang on about the vast majority of parents, and it makes me very sad.

Also, I know I do let them watch too much tv and play too much Wii, even though we limit as much as we do... I still feel they need to be using them less. I have a friend who has a couple of young kids, and they have no TV in the house. Those kids are fricken amazing with what they can already do. One is just starting kindergarten and has already read the first two Harry Potter books and is attempting to compose things on her violin. The other hasn't even started kinder and is already writing such that you can actually work out what words they are supposed to be.

Just stunning stuff, and sure, I know that after a few years kids kind of all level out and catch up on those basic reading/writing things, but it's amazing how much further ahead kids can be when those things are really full on nurtured by the parents.

Still, in our house I completely refuse to give them Nintendo DS's... so many of their friends all have them, and they spend so much time on them... ALL the time. Man, it's just wrong. My kids have pestered us for them, but no, no way will they be getting anything like that until they are old enough to buy one for themselves. And they are also never getting TVs or computers in their rooms either.

The eldest of my kids is 7, and friends of his and younger have DS's and TVs/DVD players in their rooms etc. It's just so very, very unnecessary.

If there was only the option of what most kids have today and just cutting off TV/Video games, I'd be on the side of cutting them off entirely.

I see that moving your head like a retard directly corasponds to a better sound.

good song and sounded nice , I really hate the ritualistic pomp and bullshit latched onto this probably pushed onto the kids by there music teacher or parents.

to be clear im not against stupid faces people make when concentrating or ticks people have that are uncontrollable , its stuff that's perpusfuly done and passed on or encoraged because it "shows you have emotion when playing" ( which is bullshit they may or may not and even then I don't see how that matters so long as they are making the desired sound that individual wants to produce)

Why is it more classical instruments like piano , guitar , violin that you get more of this retarded acting a specific way shit ? its like people don't believe the instruments sound can stand up for itself and they have to attach a bunch of wankery to it as if that some how makes it better or more important or more valid than another human activity.

I mean juses Christ why stop at classical instrments lets inject some wankery into everything , want to pore a drink lets make over the top hand movments and add extra finishing tilt when you stop poring , Oh wait people do do that when they pore wine but not all drinks only drinks that are conciderd to be "posh" drinks what a load of shit.
