The Top 10 Movie Weapons of All Time (Cinema Talk Post)

Ryjkyj says...

More food for thought. I'm leaving the ones I don't like out. Like the dumb-ass rail gun from Eraser.

The quad rocket launcher from Commando.
The laser whip from Johnny Mnemonic.
Rambo's survival knife and bow.
The frisbee things from Tron.
Inigo Montoya's sword from The Princess Bride.
Charles Bronson's .44 Magnum from Death Wish.
Travis Bickle's quickdraw gun Mechanism from Taxi Driver.
Dirty Harry's .357 Magnum
Bullet Tooth Tony's Desert Eagle .50 from snatch.
Freddy Kruger's glove
Jason's Machette

This isn't over yet!

MINK, jonny, nazdorvia, deathcow, all hit it-to musicians, this guy lacks the quality that developing a sound of one's own produces, but plays the manic, wreckless noodling card off, quite well....like everyone fawning over a guy like buckethead, or Stanley Jordan who can make dreamy sounds, and has an initial presence appeal, but the technical grace can only carry you so far.

Cobain? His tortured, fast-burning flame of soul, wash a white-washed cry for help, and for me, that over-shadows any potential for greatness of merit....just look at the ilk that treat Kurt like a god-buncha manic-depression candidates, coffee addicted and screaming for help in their own way, 20-somethings, with a fried internal navigation system....

another one really gets me pissed-Dave Matthews and his College Cult Crooning, ....that man's shit, runs together like a Jackson Pollock mural-and the kids who worship him wouldn't know good music if it collided with their flavor-of-the-week, world views.....

Doc Watson, Django Reinhardt, Merle Travis-
Jeff Beck, Zappa, Ronnie Montrose, yes, the Winter Bros., hell....Angus Young....whaddya know, most of these guys are either still alive, or lived long lives with smiles on their faces...not needles in their arms, or booze in their livvers.....

Merle Travis is great. He wrote that great drinking song "Dark as the Dungeon" that Johnny Cash had a hit with. And he fathered Randy Travis, who has an incredible voice. RT's version of the Beatles "Nowhere Man" is beautiful. I'll post it.

ETA: Merle Travis and Randy Travis. Not related. Carry on.

As you may know Ive created a playlist of many of the dead videos on the sift. As its been there for awhile, and there have been quite a few views of it, very few vids have been fixed or discarded. I thought a list just of yours might be of some help. The list below are all your videos on my playlist. There may be a few errors, but I gave it my best shot.

Lindsey Buckingham: Big Love

His style has always been cool, that no-pick holdin', turkey-claw, thumb index and middle, like Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Django....lotsa cats with insane crazy styles they have developed with that right hand....FM puts on a great show....high energy, thanks mostly to LB.

This reminds me of 'Frankly Mr Shankly' by the smiths, in which, Morrissey sets about to ridicule Jeff Travis (the owner of rough trade). The line in that song 'oh I didn't realise that you wrote poetry, I didn't realise you wrote such bloody aweful poetry. Mr Shankly' Is a direct reference to Travis reading his verse to the great man. Bad idea I think. Couldn't find any good link for this song though

Oh yeah, cheers deputy dog

Cobra Starship - "Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)"

theo47 says...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakes_on_a_Plane_%28Bring_It%29

"Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)" is the first single from Cobra Starship, the alter ego of Midtown's Gabe Saporta. The song also features William Beckett of The Academy Is..., Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, and Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds. The song gets its title from the 2006 film Snakes on a Plane, and was featured on the film's soundtrack and during the end credits of the film. The music video premiered in the summer of 2006, aptly in time for the premiere of the movie. The video was a quick hit on both the internet and mainstream media, and is featured in the television commercials promoting the film.

The video shows Cobra Starship (Gabe Saporta) walking through Honolulu International Airport, acting as if they were villains sneaking snakes on board in their suitcase and guitar case. Peter Wentz of Fall Out Boy makes a cameo appearance at the 1 minute and 45 seconds mark, talking on the phone nervously as the band members pass ominously. Samuel L. Jackson also makes a cameo appearance at the 2 minutes 16 seconds mark, lowering his shades and eyeing the band members as they pass, then returning to his 100 Bullets comic. He is also seen wearing the unofficial Snakes on a Plane T-shirt designed by webcomic artist Jeffrey Rowland (with snakes flying an airplane) here. The video ends with a sign for South Pacific Airlines Flight 121 as the band boards the plane, the same flight as in the film.

You talkin to me?

Farhad2000 says...

Travis Bickle (De Niro) is an alienated, isolated, depressed and sexually frustrated young man of 26 from the Midwest, who says he was a Marine. He suffers from chronic insomnia and consequently takes a job as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City. Travis spends his spare time watching pornography in seedy porn theaters and driving around aimlessly through the shadiest neighborhoods of Manhattan.

In this scene we clearly see how his isolation has reached levels where his only communication is with himself in the mirror.

Taxi Driver is a 1976 American film drama directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader. It is widely considered one of the greatest, but also one of the most controversial films in the history of American cinema and is frequently praised for its strong performances and gritty realism. The film is also notable for making stars out of both its leading actors, Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster; the latter was only thirteen years old when the movie was released. It was also the last film on which the legendary composer Bernard Herrmann (famed for his work with Alfred Hitchcock, especially Psycho) completed work on, and Taxi Driver is dedicated to his memory.
