Creepshow 2 - The Raft

MichaelL says...

In the story, the 'creature' is more of a pure black smooth thing IIRC. When I first saw this version I just laughed. Pretty sure it's just a bunch of industrial Glad garbage bags strung together.

Also, the scene in the story where the creature drags the dude through the dock slats ends with a geyser of blood literally exploding from the guy as he's forced through the small opening.

Probably it's the ominous music that makes the movie version seem more threatening than it is.

Spoony vs. XCOM - Betrayal

Fletch says...

"Luckily Firaxis has come to save the day."

We'll see. As I mentioned on BN, every developer who has made an X-Com game since TFTD have claimed to be "huge fans of the original", and they've all failed to capture what made EU and TFTD so good, or just outright sucked.

X-Com with updated graphics. That's all we want. Don't add a RTS component. Don't change the camera perspective. Don't change the genre. Don't need a multiplayer or online component. Don't add new "features" that change the gameplay and feel of the game. X-com with updated graphics. That's it. Turn-based, research tree, base building, fog of war, line-of-sight, destructable environment, a classic 50's sci-fi Forbidden Planet/This Island Earth vibe, and ominous, moody music. Why is that so hard?

They're on pirate bay, from memory. I'm in two minds about whether they're funnier than the US ones, but it was my favourite Australian comedy by a long margin. I haven't seen too much of the US version, but I think Elijah Wood does a pretty good job (the Aussie version of him was pretty weak).

The Aussie episodes seem a bit darker, but the real comedy is in Wilfred himself - he's so good. I've just secured the full US series, so will have a good compare. I expect it to be more tightly written and slightly less ominous, but hopefully retaining the charm of the original. I hear they had a full team of writers, when in the Oz version he pretty much wrote a first draft, filmed it, went onto the next one...

NO!!! I've tried to buy the DVD boxsets but you can't get them here yet, but I imagine that will change soon. That was as a present for my mate for christmas though, I'll just download them once season 1 US version is finished on TV. I'm sure it'll be funnier

Have you seen the original Aussie series, AC? Worth a look. I sifted the first scene from the first episode a while ago.

Sunday Night - Inside Australia's Chilling New Cult

Ryjkyj says...

"The idea that the group is coming together in a community, and that Miller is developing a compound, in my opinion, is ominous. Because only the most extreme cults isolate themselves in a compound: Jonestown, or Waco, Davidian Group"... Vatican City...

I love that the first part of his comment makes him sound afraid of people "coming together in a community".

Man, that sky makes the whole thing look so ominously evil. I'm not saying I'm smarter than anyone, but I think I would've gotten the hell out of there as soon as those clouds could be seen in the distance.

They're all good. The albums definitely get darker. A lot of his songs seem to be about death and loss as he's getting older - which suits me fine. My favorites on Morph the Cat are Brite Nightgown and Great Pagoda of Funn. The title track's good too - not sure what it means, but kind of ominous.

I did Kamakiriad and Nightfly back to back. I didn't know about Morph the Cat, so I'm downloading it right now.

In reply to this comment by dag:
Absolutely love the guy. Nightfly? Morph the Cat?

I'm rocking some Donald Fagen right now. Just thought you'd like to know.

Zero Punctuation: Portal 2

Croccydile says...

>> ^NetRunner:

I loved playing Portal 2, and I enjoyed it with the new pure-comedy tone, but I did kinda miss that creepy ominous vibe from the first game.

Since I was late to the Portal party (I admitted to having never played/seen the first game) I did manage to finish Portal 2 in both SP and Co-Op.

My biggest regret was first of all how easy the game was to me, and as Yahtzee states... there is practically zero replay value. Unless you are going for achivements or speed runs.

I'm usually quite poor at puzzle games and for this one to be easy to me (finished SP in 6 hours) it must have been a ummm... cakewalk... for everyone else.

EDIT: I should probably state that the game was still very enjoyable. I did not mean to intend that the game sucked because of said shortcomings.
