Choggie, if you argue that video games are a waste of time because they aren't productive then you have to follow that argument to its logical conclusion--all leisure activities are a waste of time. That would include sports, art, music--anything we do when not engaged in survival or propagating the species is basically non-productive.

You don't enjoy games. That's fine. Some people don't enjoy sports. You don't see them running around wishing that sports would suddenly disappear off the face of the earth. Not understanding the hostility.

Your examples of "meatbots" and dysfunctional families are not very compelling. Correlation does not equal causation. It seems much more likely that these people you describe were dysfunctional to begin with and were attracted to games as a way to deal with their dysfunction. I liken it to any addiction--not everyone who gambles or smokes or drinks is an addict. In the same way, not everyone who plays a video game is social misfit, although you will most certainly find social misfits who are gamers. The point is, for these people, even if games evaporated overnight they won't be cured. In all likelihood they'd just move along to some other hobby to support their dysfunction.
