Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship Experiment Proves a Point

Well, do they "often" do better... meaning "whatever a surprising amount to Melinda Gates is" do better... or "often do better" meaning as a group they perform better and graduate more than un-aided white kids. Since we're talking stats, I'd sure like to clear up the ambiguous language!
90% seems great though.

How to save 51B lives for 68 cents with simple Engineering

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

It's from here:
This quote is attributed to Nobel laureate Baruch Blumberg. In a late 80s PBS documentary, he said half of all human deaths 'may' have been due to malaria.

While it sounds astounding, it's plausible when you think about it. 93% of all humans ever born are dead. But it's a highly speculative business starting from how many people have ever lived.

Prof Carl Haub has come up with an estimate of 108 billion people since 50,000 BC. And only 6.5% of these are alive today. How Many People Have Ever Lived on Earth?

So did malaria cause the death of roughly 54 billion people? We can speculate. More than 96 billion of these 108 billion lived between 8000 BC and 1900 AD. For malaria to have caused the death of 54 billion people, it should have kept up a phenomenal rate of 5.4 million deaths per year in the last 10,000 years.

WHO estimates of 650,000 deaths per year now seem wildly off the mark. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded a study to find out how many deaths occur due to malaria in today's day and age. The number was 1.24 million in 2010! http://www.bbc.com/news/health-1...

So it's certainly plausible that malaria could have killed five times as many in an age pre-dating modern medicine when most of the world lived as communes along with their cattle and herds.

Also, the longevity of the parasite plasmodium, which causes malaria. Studies have revealed that it's been around since the time of the dinosaurs. And certainly been around from the beginning of our story. http://www.malaria.com/questions...

Entirely plausible!

Why start out with these moronic claims? Half the population has definitely not died from malaria, that's just fucking idiotic, not to mention the 51 billion number....wtf.

IMPORTANT - Save The Day

iaui says...

They're not both terrible to the same degree, though.

Your country's right-wing media have had it out for the Clintons for over 20 years now. Ever since one of them became President.

And all they've been able to come up with is some controversy about the Benghazi embassy bombing. There were many 'Benghazi's' during Bush's tenure. And the problem with the e-mail servers. And again, the Cheney-Bush presidency sucessfully deleted over 30,000 e-mails pertaining to their conspiracy to send America to war in Iraq. Why doesn't the news cover that? Because their deletion of e-mails was wholly successful.

So despite all of that fear, uncertainty, and doubt being spread by the right-wing media in the past 20 years the Clinton Foundation has done incredible humanitarian work throughout the world. Apparently it's possible that Melinda Gates and a sultan of Brunei may have been able to speak to Hillary because of their sizable donations, but it's also possible that those people are already of necessary stature to speak to Hillary.

So, that's 3 things over 20 years that stuck. Hillary has fought her entire life to be where she is, even having to endure heckling by men when she was writing her Harvard Law acceptance test. To say that she's in the same basket as Trump is, at best, intellectually dishonest. You're just parroting your media's narrative.

If you think Hillary is bad then you must believe Trump to be truly deplorable. Then why would you equate the two?

Nancy Grace Ignores Trayvon Martin Case -- TYT

shang says...

Nancy Grace is a pathetic excuse for a "reporter"

she was disbarred in Georgia for illegal practices, the bar had enough of her and ran her out of practicing

she was a suspect in the murder of her husband, and there are still questions surrounding the case and many think she had something, or knew something was going to occur but didn't stop it.

she was successfully sued and forced into settlement by CNN over the Melinda Duckett suicide the day after her interview with Nancy.

she slandered and condemned the duke lacross team and daily insults and trash talking and never apologized when it was found out the girl lied from the beginning and instead of showing up, she took a week vacation when it was found the girl had lied about the rape. Therefore 'disappearing' till the story blew over.

Her latest crap is she's screaming at top of her lungs and adamantly stating that Whitney was murdered that someone drowned her. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/16/nancy-grace-whitney-houston-comments_n_1282410.html)

Repeatedly gave false info on air on the Caylee Anthony case, to the point of fabricating evidence that actually got her investigated by the team investigating the murder all to find out it was "fabricated for ratings" she was forced to take another week vacation this time from her bosses at CNN who owns HLN.

She was fired from her old tv spot on a local Atlanta station for slander.

the lists go on and on and on, heck even Wikipedia has a loooooong list of her offenses...

she's trash that should be done away with, it only proves that media cnn/hln are 1 step below trash jerry springer type television and there is no longer any news in america only sensationalism for ratings.

Warren Buffet: Increase Taxes on Mega-Rich

quantumushroom says...

When will he do this? On is death bed?

A tax-deductible foundation is not the federal mafia. Donating to a foundation is voluntary. Buffoon wants the fed mafia to shakedown more evil rich people.

FAIL. I mean, *coughFAIL*cough

Fortune reports that Buffett will donate 85 percent of his fortune amassed from stock in the Berkshire Hathaway company to five foundations.
The donations, which will come from Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway shares, would amount to about $37 billion, based on current values.
Five-sixths of the money reportedly will go to The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which specializes in finding cures for diseases that plague impoverished nations.

What's Warren Buffoon waiting for? A gun in his face like the rest of us get?

Why Batman Is Secretly Terrible for Gotham

JiggaJonson says...

I'm going to address some of this in no particular order

"You are essentially saying people are too irresponsible and stupid to live with freedom and self-reliance

That's exactly what I'm saying. I feel like our current system isn't ideal but it's much better than nothing. I would rather people participate in the regulatory process than plan their own retirement. And to ^GeeSussFreeK, No I'm not trying to spin it in any particular direction (like a magician, 'Watch THIS hand while THAT hand gives you retirement'). I feel like there is a genuine need for social security because I honestly believe people on the whole are irresponsible. And should those individuals be made to suffer? Probably, but I feel strongly that the other responsible people in their lives who have to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives should have less of a burden (this is one of many sundries).

"Private charity happens all the time."

A heavy handed tactless comment on my part. Yes of course I realize private charities like the Red Cross and others like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, etc. exist. Yes, as my two critics above mentioned, an array of fantastic private charities exist already despite government welfare. But notwithstanding both private and government programs, there are herds of families that find themselves starving, homeless or otherwise destitute. Why you want to do away with government welfare is beyond my current understanding of poverty in America.

--------------------------
"Cutting taxes by 50% is not nearly enough."

This is the one point I think there is some wiggle room on. I absolutely agree that military spending is often superfluous and I mean that in an egregious way. If anything though, I think the funds the government has need to be redirected instead of cut. Start investing in things like education, public transportation systems and green energy instead of spending millions on bombs and jets that don't work.

MSNBC Host Attacks Peter Schiff on The Ed Show - 8/6/09

jake says...

dag, I don't think they're a telethon, but the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation donates US$1.5bn a year.. I'm pretty sure they might have built a road or two..

you are joking. They did deregulate major laws which had been in place for years - google Glass Steagall act, for one.
In this country you had a financial services authority who turned a blind eye to the cdo's that were being traded, and/or didn't even know what these new banking derivatives were, not even the bank of England had a clue.

Removing Glass Steagall would have done nothing if the government had not set interest rates so low. Oh, and don't forget the government's implied guarantee of mortgages in Freddy and Fanny Mac.

It always intrigues me to see people claim that humans need government to provide services for them. I personally don't think either socialism or capitalism are perfect, but in the latter, at least you are free to choose what you want.

Fascinating the things that are set up... and 9 million dollars... that's a drop in the ocean to try and preserve our crop diversity.

Also, nice to hear Bill Gates using his money for good (I mean, I know about the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, but this is a nice, concrete example).
