The Legacy of Bruce McLaren
Wow. Gorgeous film. The old cars used to be so beautiful. The new ones have their charm as well, but now it's all technical precision and computer-controlled mechanics. Nothing like back in those days where everything was up to the skill of the driver.
You were more connected with the car. You didn't have computer-controlled systems. It was your foot to the road. These days, there are 30 layers of computerized systems between that road and your foot.
Sure, they may be safer, and more reliable; but really, the man-and-machine relationship has been slightly lessened in recent years, especially with regulators making the cars slower, and changing the qualifying specs to make it more "fair" for everyone.
There were huge battles waged by auto makers to make the most powerful beast they could. And for a while, one would come out that just KILLED the competition. And now we have these limits imposed to prevent such a thing. That's another story though.
I miss the old days, even though it was before my time. What a wondrous time of innovation and highly skilled drivers who went on to become legends, just like Bruce McLaren, Ayrton Senna, Schumacher, etc. I'm sure a whole new generation of legends will be born to the sport going forward, but it will never be the same raw, powerful, compassionate, skill-dependent sport that it once was.
Top Gear: Bugatti Veyron vs. McLaren F1.
Horsepower... The Veyron has very little of that . Not as much as a Corvette, that's for sure.
Incorrect, sir.
A Veyron from the factory boasts 1001 HP at the rear wheels. The motor is essentially two 4.0 liter V8's wound together through a lot of engineering genius & electronic wizardry.
A stock Corvette ZR1 puts out 638hp at the rear wheels using a supercharged 6.2 liter LS9.
The Z06 model is rated at 505bhp with a 7.0 liter LS7.
A race-prepped C6.R Corvette is the lesser motor, putting out around 500bhp with the LS7.
A Callaway C16 tweaks the LS7 in different ways to jack the output to as much as 700hp.
In general, the smaller motor is preferred by road racers for the more usable powerband. The bigger motor is preferred by drag racers for the sheer displacement, but requires additional modifications to bump the HP, usually through turbocharging or supercharging.
It it possible that you were trying to drip sarcasm on us, but I saw nothing to indicate that this is nothing more than pure misinformation.
For those that care, the rating on the McLaren F1:
6.1 liter BMW S70/2 12 cylinder race motor capable of 627bhp.
They are all beasts of automobiles, to be certain. I'd gladly drive any or all of them, given the opportunity.
And yes, I registered as a sifter just for this!
Top Gear: Bugatti Veyron vs. McLaren F1.
>> ^TickleMyElmo:
A 1 mile drag race is just a horsepower competition. Any number of $150K cars (modified turbo Corvettes, Vipers, Supras, etc.) could show up and hand the Veyron its ass in such a race.
I'd be more interested in a road course race.

look at all the high-tech gear - F1 teams must have higher budgets than the european space program
Unbelievably, the budgets of all the teams put together is pretty close to the ESA's.

Interesting side comment. One of the developers of the McLaren super-road car has turned his attention to making conventional road vehicles more effective. His claim to fame is that modern cars are to heavy. Engine technology is a Red Herring and the real problem is that you need a square of the weight in energy to move an object. So that goes to say that a 1/3 reduction in weight would cause a direct 50% increase in effectiveness! His idea is to rethink the automobile from start to finish. And from start, he means the even most basic elements like how does one acquire materials and what components of a car needed in the fist place, and is there a way to change the basic concept of how we do certain things...is there only one way to do suspension or braking?
Anyway, interesting stuff, and if anyone have the technological know how, its McLuaren.

Another fine Malcolm Mclaren creation! There's a lyric from "Press Darlings" (from Kings of the Wild Frontier) that I always liked:
Brilliant!

Thanks for the enhancement. I love watching a good double dutch team. The Rukui team, eh, hard to get past the middle class- psuedo gangster stuff, but the TV station was indeed interesting, who knew you could mis-match flower arrangements?

^D'oh, my comment also had a "double meaning", sorry for that.
I had my Double Dutch post (and doubleposting comments) in mind
http://www.videosift.com/video/Malcolm-McLaren-Double-Dutch-1983
also by Malcolm McLaren (you just posted Buffalo Girls, so I guess you'll like it)
Unfortunately I don't have a version of Ladyflash with better music quality.
I have tried to find another double Dutch video..but, I couldn't find anything siftable..I found this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvKlRDwRUL0
interesting, as I was having quite mixed opinions about this clip (US style, dance/jump/ropeskip/athletics of mixed quality?)..but I found the TV studio at the end of the clip quite charming:)

How fast is a Formula 1 Car?
I'd love to see them do the same thing with an F1 car and the latest generation of supercars- McLaren, Koenigsegg, Zonda Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Bugatti.
The Bugatti Veyron, for one, is just as quick accelerating and faster at the top-end, but would be left far behind on the track. Even knowing the outcome would still make for really exciting TV.

The McLaren F1 was giving her a nice vibratey feeling all through her guttiwuts.
I'm sure she was enjoying herself, it sounded that way.
