GOP Handmaid’s Tale

BSR says...

Why do you make this a woman thing when a man thing was involved? That sure is pretty convenient for you I would imagine. Takes two to tango.

bobknight33 said:

I don't understand republicans. Trying to stop the killing of unborn children because the mom finds "it" inconvenient is nonsense .

Woman should be able to kill their child for any reason. Let the DR snip the limbs off, the spinal cord and puree the child in the womb. After all it just a blob isn't it?

Man In The Women's Locker Room Is Now The Norm

JiggaJonson says...

Yes the manner she's complaining is there to draw attention and hopefully embarrassed the person. As I said above this, she's not complaining about something happening, she's just complaining that the person exists.

On your second question, I was taking a pee when my kid was in and let me be brutally honest here. I thought she was still infantile enough to file things like this into 'I don't remember ' but she piped up very articulately "daddy, let me see your body" and I swear on my grandfather's grave it's the only time I've felt genuinely self conscious around my kid. I shut the curtain to the tub and explained to her that there are boys and girls, etc. But...and don't get me wrong, I'm not wanting to wander around just naked all the time, however, I see my wife on occasion interact with her like that and I wish I didn't have to feel like worried that my own kid is going to see me naked. If she does it's not the end of the world, but I guess when I'm not doing anything wrong - I wish I didn't have to worry about it. Yes.

I know different cultures have more nuanced views of nudity. Not all nudity is inherently sexual.

Moreover, the woman never even made it clear that they saw anything. She never says they saw it

Double checking

No, she says a lot of variations of "I see" or "he has" those verb forms fit with the other hypotheticals that she lays out to make them sound as close to something happening as possible.

Note - she doesn't say "I saw" or "(s)he showed" or "(s)he had" the way one would if an event happened in the past. She's talking in present tense.

But let's assume someone saw something in a flash of a towel to garment transition. For sayings sake. Yeah... I don't think it's too much to ask that parents sit their kids down and explain "well, you know Elton John? That guy is WAYYYY more manly than these people ever want to be. These people hate manly things so much they have decided they want to be women." Or something like that.

bcglorf said:

Honest question for everyone really angry at the lady in the video. Is the problem her manner and attitude alone? That is to ask a second question, do you think it is unreasonable for a parent to not want their young daughter seeing naked penises?

Joe Biden Burns Out In His Corvette Stingray

Jesusismypilot says...

I love how people are trying so hard to show how virile and with it VP Biden is by showing old clips of him doing manly things. Sadly, it only shows how far mentally he has fallen so quickly. This appears to be from Oct of '16. I feel badly for the guy, Joe has always been ok with me.

Brett Kavanaugh Is a Terrible Judge & a Liar...

Asmo says...

You wouldn't be a Spartan... While all the men would be doing manly things, you'd be whining about how no one cares about your feelings and how oppressed you were. Fuck, even the women would be more manly than you. And the children. Possibly also the domesticated animals (seriously, Spartan chickens would be badass...)

But I like where you're going with the whole "caring, tolerant leftist advocates mass infanticide" shtick. Really gives you tonnes of moral high ground to ride that high horse around on. X D

Heroic River Boarder Rescues Drowning Squirrel

korsair_13 says...

Heroic? So, some river boarder sees a squirrel on a rock and thinks: "awww, how cute. I'm going to go over there and see if he needs help, because clearly he couldn't have gotten there on his own by swimming. Hey little buddy, you want a ride on my extremely non-natural looking piece of flotation device, something which doesn't exist in your environment."

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH. Terrifying man-thing. It's going to eat me. I just came out to this rock to wait while I gathered up my energy to swim the rest of the way across the river and some monster slithered down the river and emerged, all yellow and black and hairy looking. Leave me alone, vile beast! Curse you!"

"You look scared little squirrel, are you afraid of the water? Here, get on my board. Come on. I'll move a little closer to you to make sure you get on. Stop backing away."

"OH NO! He is moving in for the kill, quick, where can I run! Ha, the silly monster can't swim up river, I shall go there! I shall jump to that rock with the fast moving water on it and show this evil monster how squirrels swim. That will show him not to mess with my kind!"

*JUMP*

"Glub Glub. Blargh, this is turning out to be much harder than I thought. Ahhhh, glub glub."

"Oh no, the little guy jumped in the river again. I'll just swim over and save him from his ultimate demise. Silly guy, why did he do that? I was offering him a ride, why didn't he understand that was what I was doing?"

"Glub glub; AAAAAHH, it's coming closer. I am doomed. Farewell cruel world, I knew thee not long but I loved thee so well."

"Gotcha. Here, take a ride on my board. That's better, isn't it little guy? Here, I'll bring you to shore."

"Wah! You have trapped me! Are you going to take me back to your friends to feast on me together? Wait. What is this thing? What magics be this? How does this trap float so well. It must be made of some sort of advanced tree structure that only the giants know how to grow. I am tempted to jump back in the river but I am certain you will catch me again and my energy will have been wasted. No, I will play the possum and wait for my moment. Yes, just when you think you have got me, I shall spring away to safety. Silly giants, they do not know anything. You are bringing me closer to shore, yes. Closer. Closer. *Jump* Hahahahhahaha. Silly giant, now I am up a tree, you will never catch me. Of course, you could have avoided all of this by leaving me alone! Next time, don't waste both of our time and energy by trying to catch a squirrel, we are too smart for you giant monsters!"

"There you go little buddy, now you are safe. Shouldn't have jumped in the river like that, though. Next time you see a human, expect them to be trying to help you, man. Now I will go and cover myself in patchouli oil and smoke some weed."

Moral of the story: Leave wild animals the fuck alone.

How our society fails its men and boys -- the trailer

shatterdrose says...

To say we haven't hyper masculinized our culture is just plain ignorant. If you look throughout history, you can see the gradual progression towards an ungodly amount of "manliness". Same goes for women too. A lot simply comes down to advertising and commercialization, the segmentation of the have's and have not's and so forth.

You want to have respect? Be a man! Want money? Be a man! But what IS being a man? Is it punching some dude in the face for "disrespecting" you? Or if it laughing it off knowing the other guy is just a loser?

In reality, it comes down to money. To people who are poor, violence is usually the solution. There is no question about that; statistically speaking poorer men are more likely to lash out violently than those with more. Mostly because the poor man only has his respect. The rich man, well, he could get sued, lose his job, get hurt, lose his house and fancy car etc.

Knowing this, how do you advertise to the male with little? You tell him if he wants to be anything, he needs to be a man! Like James Bond or something. 6-pack abs (despite a long history of that not being the ideal form, i.e. early black and white movies or dress makers changing the sizes of their clothes from a size 12 being "average" to a size 6.)

I know we love to say men are being feminized and turning into "wussies." Fox news loves talking about how the NFL is worried about brain injuries (despite all the evidence showing clearly there is a ton of it) and Christian groups claiming bullying is GOOD for society because it weeds out the gays. For a "man" to, I have no idea actually, whatever it is the Fox News thinks men should be . . . Are "men" supposed to always be violent? They should always resort to shooting each other over trivial things?

What exactly is "being a man" all about anyway? Not being gay? Not being like a woman? And why is being a woman, or gay, so terrible? Why is it that high heels and make up were originally a "man" thing? Or frilly clothes . . . Why is it that 100 years ago, little boys and girls wore the same clothes, which were usually dresses? Hell, Ernest Hemmingway (a man's man) wore a dress as a child. There are plenty of pictures of him in it, and it's even on display at his house in Key West. So is he less of a man now?

And if wearing a skirt is so not manly, why are Scot's so manly then? Or is it manly to say fuck society, I'll do what I want? Is it manly to go against the flow? Stand up for what you believe? For instance, the story of the father who wore dresses because his son wanted to wear a dress, and the father didn't want his son to feel ashamed for being who he is? I'm pretty sure that father, as some say, has some pretty big brass balls. Would you do that for your kid? Or would you bow to societal pressure instead?

A worthy topic of discussion . . . I mean, right after ending the pointless wars and stopping the NSA from finding out whether or not you wear your wife's panties . . .

Hollywood actor Ben Affleck defends Arabs

ulysses1904 says...

The actual exchange was:
Woman - ...I can't trust Obama. I have read about him and he's not, he's not..he's a...um..he's an Arab.
McCain - no ma'am. He's a decent family man citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is all about.

I don't hear it as McCain saying Obama is either Arab or decent man thing. I hear it as McCain responding to HER use of the word "Arab" as a pejorative.

Bradley Manning Trial, with Dan Choi - Countdown

westy says...

LOL SO STUPID Keith Olbermann is so shit at "news" or "reporting"

Just wish people reported things properly or did Unbiased interviews on both sides.

The whole manning thing is mental and its amusing how USA ultimately acts in many ways similar to Russia , Its hard to have respect for the american legal system when its so obvouse that the ritchest and most powerful people are exempt from it.

Its baffaling how many people on the ground have this illusion of "democracy" and accountably for all people under the american flag , its all bullshit.

cnt believe people join the army to fight for america , although I guess they join more to make money to pay for food and basic life style.

Justice: What's a Fair Start? What Do We Deserve?

mgittle says...

@chilaxe

For one, saying Netrunner's rsponse is "interesting" sort of indicates you didn't pay a lot of attention to the video, because that's exactly what was discussed in the lectures.

You're still missing the argument, I think, and it seems that is because you don't respect the dignity of those people you see as "STD-collecting hippies". That's your right, but I'm willing to bet that's based on a vast misunderstanding of those people rather than any facts or moral judgement. Yeah they seem like crazies, and yes I'm sure you've seen some videos, but you're generalizing and stereotyping, which is annoying as hell in moral arguments because it obfuscates the issue with subjective crap. You're also making the assumption that the people who attend the burning man thing do nothing the rest of the year.

Also, the whole "I pay more taxes" thing doesn't hold water. If you own a business and your taxes pay for a bus system you don't use, someone who works for you might use that bus system. If you own a business that has a fleet of 100 trucks, you're using up the roads a lot faster than the average person. There are a ton more examples that apply to all sorts of situations. Your success is built upon the people who make less than you, and you benefit from their existence whether you think they're lazy scum or not. Not to mention, they purchase products as well, which increases demand for things.

I mean, why do you think cheap credit has been such a problem in the US/UK? Real wages haven't increased for most people in decades, but cheap credit and rising home prices allowed people to keep buying things. But, the credit bubble just burst and people are trying to live within their means...hello recession. So, keep on with your philosophy, but realize it bites everyone in the ass.

As for "unequal contributions", that was discussed in the lecture as well. Your "contribution" to society depends on your skill set. Which skills are valued depends on the society and local culture. So, in a given society (especially one where success is defined by profit), some skills will be inherently valued more than others. Therefore, some people will gain more money than others. But, if you eliminate people and/or their ways of thinking from your society, what happens when a new demand arises for their skills in some unforeseen way?

What happens when a company like Lehman Bros. fires people who say things like, "Housing prices can't always go up!" and replaces them with more people who go with the flow? We know the answer to that. ...and your brain control comment, that's just awful. Are you suggesting those people will be eliminated from society through some sort of forced brain manipulation? Where will the money for that come from?
