Russian volunteer to have world's 1st head transplant

Drachen_Jager says...

Most 'spare parts' in China come from the political prisons the prisoners are executed for their crimes and harvested for parts.

Why else would this operation happen in China?

Gunther von Hagens does an exhibit of plastinated humans, Body World, where most of the specimins are Chinese political prisoners killed to order (he literally communicates things like, shoot this one in the heart, I need an intact skull).

@newtboy
told ya he was pissed.
i admire this mans passion.
in fact,i applaud it.

while i do not agree with his attack therapy tactics and do not subscribe to his over-all conclusions.i absolutely ADORE how he calls out the cognitive dissonance of the american voter.

because he is right.

how can you subscribe to a law that makes prostitution illegal, yet porn legal?
or the guy who deals crack or meth as being a criminal? yet opiates are,by far,the leading cause of death in regards to controlled substances.so who is the bigger criminal?

and what, exactly,IS a criminal?is it because the state says so?if you subscribe to that, then i am a criminal.

i found his condemnation of the christian church to be the most delicious.
jesus christ was an insurrectionist,a radical,a dissident and a dissenter.a zealot in the face of the powered elite.

so how can you fight a war of aggression in jesus christs name?
how can you state that god blesses america with over 2.4 million people incarcerated?or to categorize and demonize those who may be different i.e:gay, lesbian or atheist and yet still call yourself a christian?

i giggled with delight when he pointed out that the very same people who are championing those insurrectionists, dissidents and agitators of the past as somehow being representative of their morals and ethics, are the very same people they are demonizing today for breaking the rules.

this man is so pissed off and i love it.
he says things that will make conformists extremely uncomfortable, and we NEED to be a bit uncomfortable.if only to shake off the apathy and lethargy.

as for the taxes argument..meh..i dont subscribe to the "privatize everything" ,because some things should not be profit driven, but i also do not subscribe to the 'taxes pay for essential services",unless wars of aggression, corporate welfare and big-agribusiness subsidies are considered "essential".

our democracy is broken, our government dysfunctional and serves only to keep the balance of the status quo on top..and fuck the regular dude.

can you REALLY say your government represents you?
ok,go ahead and vote.here are your choices:chocolate or vanilla but both are made by hagen daaz.

you really should watch to the end..he just gets madder and madder.
truths can often be uncomfortable, but that never changes the fact that they are truths.

and goddamn i love your optimism! just cant share it on this issue, though if you could bottle it up i am betting you would make a fortune.

ill have three bottles of newt please...to go.

That's Gunther von Hagens in the background and at the end of the video, the guy who does the artworks with cadavers. This leads me to believe that this has come from one of his Channel 4 live autopsies or biological documentaries on UK TV. They use nude models (male and female) to illustrate key things to the audience at different points throughout the show.

Correct

I'm not sure why she's naked either it doesn't really make any sense. As to the audience acting so calm its probably because its a British program (programme!) and surprising to most americans, in europe a womans body is just a body. While we in america go nuts and riot over janet jacksons brief half second patsy covered blurry tit, in europe nudity is no big deal, nor is sexuality in general. At least its not nearly as big a deal as it is here.

I dunno about that, you wouldn't see this programme before 9pm I think.
Why is she naked? Errrrrrrr...not 100%, but I think the comment above is correct. The corpses weren't clothed, so why would the living ones be either. Frankly I'm a little disappointed the Red Cross instructor was clothed and didn't check to see if the tongue had fallen into the girls throat with her own tongue.

I used demonstrator models for CPR in a water rescue course, the models will be naked as it's easier to see the rib structure and determine the the point of the sternum. It's vital that you're compressing the correct area for CPR to work effectively, giving the visual aid of being able to see where on the body to place your hands for resuscitation is a useful way of making sure first time learners (quite a few of the audience I'd imagine) will have a clearer idea of what to do and how to do it properly. Learning basic anatomy in situations like this are key, as you can apply what you know to all sizes and shapes of body rather than a guess of 'about there is good'.

Comprehensible, in depth modern particle physics lecture

Clayton says...

An interesting article about Peter Higgs, a humble guy who says:

"Most of what has been attached to my name should not have been," he replies, "but probably the Higgs boson is correctly attached because I was probably the person who drew attention to it most in my papers. However, as far as the mechanism of generating vector boson masses is concerned, I usually write down a whole string of names, starting with Anderson and including Englert and Brout, Gerald Guralnik, Dick Hagen and Tom Kibble, and also Gerard 't Hooft."
http://physicsweb.org/articles/world/17/7/6

The physicist in the video, Kim Griest, says the typical theoretical upper bound for mass of higgs boson is around 1 TeV. He, personally thinks around "1000 GeV" is where it should be, "maybe up to 2000 GeV". Yet, Jos Engelen, CERN's chief scientific officer, who's been at CERN since 1971, say's "LEP showed that the Higgs was heavier than 114.4 GeV, and we can also guess its mass from other experiments. Within the Standard Model we know that it is not heavier than 240 GeV at the 95% confidence level." Engelen says that the LHC will only be able to produce pairs of Higgs bosons if the Higgs mass is less than 500 GeV. Hmmm, I remain thoroughly confused
http://physicsweb.org/articles/world/17/9/7

The New York Times has a suprisingly good, and lenghty, article about the LHC with nice multimedia:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/15/science/15cern.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

CERN has a metric shitload of media and info here:
http://press.web.cern.ch/press/
- It kinda bugs me that they have such a strict copyright on their media. Isn't it predominantly publicly funded?

Perspective on collision energies:
The LEP, the predicessor to LHC, prior to going offline in 2000, topped out at --- 104 GeV.
The Tevatron at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is running at ---------------- 1.96 TeV.
The LHC will initially be capable of colliding beams of protons at an energy of -- 14 TeV.
The abandoned SSC project here in the US would have been capable of --------- 40 TeV.
