8-bit godzilla squirrel running around with a chainsaw

rich_magnet says...

More than 8 independent sprites. Though clever programmers were able to reassign sprite registers in the h-blanks. And what was the resolution? I seem to recall the C64 had half the lateral resolution (something like 192) when colour sprites were used.

Starcraft 2 Cracktro by Razor 1911

>> ^Croccydile:

This brings back some old memories... common for these kinds of intros on certain C64, Amiga, PC releases back in the day. Razor1911 is one of the originals! You can find alot of these on YouTube as well since finding them individually in original form now is exceptionally difficult. Was this specific to Starcraft 2 or simply an updated .nfo viewer?
On a semi-related note, its good to see that the 64k intros are (amazingly) still being made today as well. Rather difficult to believe its possible to do that anymore, especially in 3D without all the bloat from libraries.
One of the best, and it still works on modern OS/PCs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkEsP9H2HGM
Unfortunately some of the productions are false positives in modern virus scanners, thinking because of the .exe packer its a trojan (Not the case here)

I believe this was written specifically for SC2 but I am not sure they might use old stuff and just update the text in it. Dunno.

As for C64 and Amiga intros/demos I agree.
Another great 4k PC demo is: http://videosift.com/video/Elevated-Procedural-realtime-terrain-demo (elevated - RGBA & TBC) Winner of 2009 Breakpoint.

Thanks for the link. It really is awe inspiring.

Windows 95 "Start Me Up" Commercial (1995)

westy says...

windows 95 was actualy exciting.

to some exstent windows 7 had a degree of the same excitment , but windows 5 was where it was at having used windows 3.1 and other OS's such as the one on the atari ST and C64 , win 95 was pritty cool. allso i think when your yonger everything seems way more cool and not just a fractul repititoin of the same thing over and over again.

saying all that xp was good as well , but it was not realy exciting it was more of the same sort of thing as when getting win 7 , just a upgrade that was necaccery.

i think my first fully owned pc was win 98 with a voodoo 2 300mhz lol !

History Of The Commodore Amiga

jmd says...

Wonderful stuff here. I was a c64 user but pretty much jumped off it to a 486 pc, I knew about the amiga and used it in school a few times but never really owned or "used" it. My only time in really abusing one was we were supposed to make a slide show animation in school on amiga 500's, and we had a normal paint utilitie as well as the ability to digitize to black and white using video toster that was setup on an amiga 2000.

Well I digitized so many objects and people that I had to export my project from the 500 to the 2000 cause I ran out of memory.

Its a shame this video didn't show to much of the programs that run on the amiga.

The Chipophone - Homemade 8-bit synthesizer

Croccydile says...

Whoa. The arpeggiator really makes this one. It would not sound C64-like without one. Having a program mode is pretty damn nifty as well.

His website says it uses an 8-bit (heh) microcontroller programmed to synthesize 8 channels in realtime. I guess this makes sense since using real hardware would have required alot more circuity and complexity. Apparently it generates samples off a 38khz interrupt so that probably greatly simplifies timing (for correct tuning) on such a thing as well.

Duh. You make a very good point there. But at least none of those people think they belong to a "community" or "culture"

Oh, man... yeah they do...

Here in Australia the two largest versions of this are Ford vs Holden (now owned by GM), people will seriously beat the hell out of others based on liking the wrong car brand.

I completely don't get it... my first real car that I bought when I was 20 or so was a Holden Commodore, and then the first car my wife and I bought when we became a serious 'family' as such was a Ford Falcon

So, yeah, not limited to Apple whatsoever. People like to show that they are 'Apple' overtly as a 'sticking it to the man' against MS I would say. And the fierce arguments between both sides is very similar to the fights between people with different consoles. A lot of it comes down to fear that you've backed the wrong horse... at least I reackon when I was a kid with a ZX Spectrum it was... 'Nah, the Spectrum is better than the C64... yeah... is... nerrr'

My distaste for Apple as a company is their smarmy fricken attitude and those vs ads predominantly. IF they had been doing ads about how great their machines are all this time without the bullshit pissing on MS then I'd be far more happy for them.

Oh... I know another thing that gets me riled up... the users themselves. We have a couple in our company, and they're forever trying to convert you over to Apple... Argh. Shuttup. Be happy with your Apple, and I'll be happy with my PC.

So that's where my bleating comes from, others trying to tell me how wrong I am to like Windows.

Hell, I LIKE Macs. Last two laptops I bought I wanted them to BE Macs but could not come at the huge price difference.

Still... that doesn't mean I can see the point in the iPad still Useless lump that it is

4-bit colour is a maximum of 16 colours.

>> ^jmd:

The C64 wasnt 4 bit color, its limit was just 16 colors, which is more then this game used. This game looks more like the atari 2600.

Truckchase says...

That is awesome. Any experts know if that is SID (c64) "rendered" or if it's a different platform? My old roommate used to compose music with a card that had 4 c64 SID units on it. He had to pull them from old dead c64s. It was really cool.

you only play online if you subscribe to gold, and odds are they're not going to do that.
Besides, it's up to the parents to decide that. I was playing Tenchu when I was like 10/11, and that's one of the goriest videogames of the era, and (As far as you're all concerned) i'm not a mass murderer.
Now.. as for getting a PC, there's a lot less for a kid his age to do on a PC really. There's games for like 3-10 year olds, and then games for 16+ year olds, but not a lot in between. A console is a great starter platform for any gamer of any age. Complete content control by the parents, it's got a built in feature that you can set to only allow your kids to play X-amount of time a day, and, for the most part, they've got a lot more kid friendly games (Viva pinata, Marvel games, all the lego games etc.)
This kid.. Seeing him warms my heart. That's one appreciative little guy. and from the sounds of it, he's earned it. Sounds like he's had some hospital trouble in the past, and who knows, maybe that's why he's so concerned they bought it, because they probably had to pay medical expenses in the past and he'd know how much it would cost. Power to the kid, Enjoy it
>> ^westy:
surly he is to young to be playing a game that involves blowing the shit out of everything and swearing at people online?
also although im sure an x box is gr8 fun he would have done so better having a pc, that way he can play games but also learn with it and not just have his brain fall out.

I started on an Atari and c64 when i was under 10 years old , from 13 i had a pc , maby if i had had a game console i would have lernt far less .

on pc there are a plithora of games that fit all age ranges plenty of very good games , the only stuff a console has for games over pc are third person platform/ shooter games / arcade racing games.

consoles are really good in terms of shove it on and it works , but it wont really contribute to making you understand things better.

It would be interesting if you had a non brain washed kid and had a Pc and 360/ps3 infront of them for cuple of years which one they would use the most .

I think a console is good to have if you already have a pc , but if you only had to have one id have a pc every time.

Its far more enjoyable watching videos, making music , making games , making art , editing photographs , playing casual games , playing flahs games , playing hl games , playing driving , flight sims.

than grinding through the majorty of console games that are for the most part recycled garbage.
dont get me wrong plenty of good console games out there that are not on pc , i just think the lack of bing able to be creative and only play games on it.
