I confess i didn't watch the entire debate... how did Dr. Paul do in relation to the other *shivers* 'candidates'?
I have a great deal of respect for him... but try as i might i just can't get behind some of what he is saying... i just don't believe a lot of it... For example: Its the government and it's regulations that have made health care what it is. I just see absolutely no evidence that is in any way accurate... On the other hand i completely agree on other issues.... First election i am going to be able to actually vote in and i can't decide if i'd rather vote for someone i disagree with but actually think is doing what they believe is the best for the country... or... gezzz practically any of the others who seem to be more interested in business as usual...
His stance on marriage tends to rattle my Democratic friends. They believe the monolithic Federal Government should really be the only law of the land... except when California legalize medical marijuana and the Feds stepped in, then it was all "state's rights!" but I digress.
I personally think the problem is that government gives too much legitimization to marriage and incentivizes people to seek it out with the benefits they offer to married couples. If you're single, you pay a lot more taxes. If you're married, you pay less. That's the incentive.
So when the G&L community wants these benefits (sure they want to also marry for love, but a lot of this is about equality as well!), the government creates civil unions. They have the same benefits but just without the title of "marriage". It's just not equal. It's just not fair.
I doubt VERY much that is what 'they' believe... but then they are your friends. I'm really ok with his personal believe in marriage being between a man and a woman because i believe he makes it fairly clear that it's simply his personal belief... I have a hard time seeing him doing anything to preventing Gay or Lesbian couples from marrying or obtaining a civil union.
When it comes to Ron Paul what always really turns me off is the idea that regulation is the cause of all our woes... and that the free market cures all.
For everything i love to hear him say... ending wars... foreign occupations... basses overseas... etc... there is something that just makes me go... Yikes... really?...

Think about it this way. If he was elected, he'd have the executive power to end all the wars. He'd have a hard time affecting the market in any profound way. To me it's about priorities. And I think cutting defense spending is the most important step in the right direction.
I'd love him as secretary of state or defense. As long as he does not touch domestic policy.
too bad blanky, he's not singing a tune your corporate masters can get behind. so. he. will. not. win. the. primary.
no, honestly it is too bad.
if we're going to be a nation of jesus kissing, climate change denialists, environment raping, broke ass, impoverished, unhealthy, uneducated fucktards.... at least we can be all of those things without the perpetual fucking wars.
I was very impressed by his exchange with Sick Santorum. So many people are unfamiliar with Iran and its history.
I have read an excellant book on the US overthrow, All the Shah's Men, which goes a little into the after-effects to the present day, including the hostage crisis.
I tried to explain this to a friend once, but it is so far from the narrative taught in schools and by the media, he thought I was spouting a conspiracy theory. Very frustrating.
Ron Paul issues I disagree with: abortion, faith and immigration.
Ron Paul issues I agree with: cutting defense spending, ending wars, bringing military back to US, end the Fed, civil liberties, government out of marriage, end the drug war, etc.
Obama issues I disagree with: extended wars, increasing military actions and spending, bailing out wall street and banks, etc.
Obama issues I agree with: he seems like he's a cool guy. I like that he plays basketball. He's in great shape.
