These symbols make sense only after they are explained to you. I don't think you can actually "figure out" what's written based on the provided knowledge.

The idea is that knowing the radicals and how the words relate to each other helps learning and makes it easier to remember, check out the BBC new article above. Also, we are generally good at remembering stories, so the stories help too.
