Welles' meandering 1976 film focuses on notorious art forger Elmyr de Hory, and author/fraudster Clifford Irving, in engaging several philosophical questions. If the forged painting is as beautiful as the original, then what afterall is forged? Is it the signature that makes the artwork?

These questions culminate in this riveting monologue on Chartres, the epic cathedral whose authorship is unknown.
