Faceswapping, Unethical Videos, and Future Shock

I was going to tell a science fiction story about faceswapping, and mass blackmail. Then the news broke about unethical faceswapping videos, and software designed and marketed for creating them: and I realised the future had arrived faster than I thought.

The Nick Cage clip he pointed to looked like some sort of rubber mask or something, sort-of okay, but the facial expressions just didn't work somehow. We're not at the point where you can fake a tape and experts can't tell the difference.

I remember seeing on the sift not too long ago an After Effects presentation on some magic they have in the next version which completely removed some element in a moving shot with birds and shit all around it with ease. This sort of thing will be the norm in no time.

Unless of course it was blurrier, like from a security camera. Forensics would likely still be able to determine it's a fake, but it could well be that a damning clip could have a huge impact before that happens. I could absolutely envision scenarios where this sort of tech could easily ruin a person's life.

With all the trial by social media things these days, the damage is done long before forensics are even required, and retractions get very little traffic. Think about SWAT'ing with zero evidence and a person still ended up dead.

My personal prediction is that it will in the next 10 years get good enough to fool casual viewers. But society will adapt by recognizing that video needs to be verified, and any trustworthy media outlet will need to employ forensic video experts to verify clips.

We already do this with photos. No one thinks that even good photoshops of celebrity heads on porn stars are real. Or that photographic evidence that Hillary Clinton is a lizard person is likely to check out. I mean other than Alex Jones.
