Vox: Why Puerto Rico is not a US state

greatgooglymoogly says...

It's hard to complain about representation if you can't even get a vote from the people asking for it. Congress should recognize any decision they make, let self-determination win.

If the economy stays bad though, people will continue to leave and it will just become a death-spiral with no end except a bailout.

Colbert To Trump: 'Doing Nothing Is Cowardice'

greatgooglymoogly says...

I think everybody advocating for even more gun control needs to put a nice 24" sign on their yard saying "This home not protected by firearms." For some reason most people hesitate to do that. It's like herd immunity for viruses. General gun ownership keeps everybody safer even if they don't own one, criminals don't like to confront armed people.

"By comparing criminal victimization surveys from Britain and the Netherlands (countries having low levels of gun ownership) with the U.S., Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck determined that if the U.S. were to have similar rates of "hot" burglaries as these other nations, there would be more than 450,000 additional burglaries per year where the victim was threatened or assaulted. (Britain and the Netherlands have a "hot" burglary rate near 45% versus just under 13% for the U.S., and in the U.S. a victim is threatened or attacked 30% of the time during a "hot" burglary.)"

Making Solar Panels With A Particle Accelerator

Oh god, they've invaded Videosift! I get ads for this company all the time on facebook, begging me to invest in their company. Their technology seems neat but it's still waaaay to early to know if they will be a viable player in solar.

Rotary Jails and Accidental Amputations

greatgooglymoogly says...

Strange that a hand crank would have the power to amputate someone's limb. Especially since the gear reduction doesn't seem to be all that high, there's just not that much friction in the system to overcome.

Why Switzerland is the Safest Place if WW3 Ever Begins

Yea, I thought that was going to be the point of the video. When I started reading about bunkers in the comments, I knew the video would be worthless. Nobody goes to war without permission of the bankers.

Shear Pins are Smart (They're Mechanical Fuses)

greatgooglymoogly says...

I don't think the inertia of the blades have anything to do with breaking the pin, rather the inertia of the motor/pto continuing to drive the shaft after the blades have seized. Same principle though.

Alan Dershowitz Says Trump Cannot Be Guilty of Obstruction

greatgooglymoogly says...

I think what Alan is trying to say is that every prosecutor has discretion. Comey isn't guilty of obstructing justice because he decided Clinton wasn't guilty with her email server. He's not guilty of obstruction because he didn't investigate Seth Rich's murder as it related to the DNC and wikileaks. These are all judgement calls. And he's saying as President, Trump has the ultimate authority in judgement calls in what to investigate, and it's completely legal to say investigate this, don't investigate that, or fire someone to stop an investigation. Furthermore, congress has the unilateral power to impeach him if they think any behavior of his is improper. It doesn't need to be illegal and isn't reviewable by a court. They could impeach him for putting katsup on his steak and that would be legal.

Basically you don't need any codified legal basis for impeaching a President.

So Much CO2 That Trees Can't Save Us

It likely is too late, as soon as these short-lived but potent gases are released it will get unpleasant very quickly. I know dumping iron in the ocean to stimulate algae growth which then sinks as acts as a carbon sink has been discussed. Also, spraying aerosols into the upper atmosphere constantly can decrease warming, but that doesn't reduce the CO2.

AHCA: A Republican Response to The Affordable Care Act

No reason at all for a healthy young person to get insurance under this plan, even with the lower 1:5 premium ration allowed. I think this is the plan, make it destined to fail so it can be scrapped entirely in 3 years.

The Brachistochrone Problem

The Snail-Smashing, Fish-Spearing, Eye-Popping Mantis Shrimp

greatgooglymoogly says...

That bit about the shrimp able to reflect a photon of light with rotating polarity is wrong I think. They were probably trying to say reflecting polarized light and also able to vary the angle of polarization. So for one photon, no matter how far away you are when you detect it, it will always have the same polarization. And the photon .1sec later will have a different angle.

Deepwater Horizon Blowout Animation

greatgooglymoogly says...

I would imagine checking the function of the BOP would be standard procedure after it is built or prior to putting in the field. I don't imagine it was mis-wired on the rig itself. The video seems to say that wouldn't have mattered anyway because the previously unknown problem causing the pipe to buckle.
