Sexualization vs Objectification

dannym3141 says...

I'd just like to say that this does go both ways though..

I know a couple of different guys with Asperger's and some other kinds of developmental issues from where i go swimming, and several times in the past i've seen a female react towards those guys like they've been weird or creepy when all they did was say "Hello" like i've seen them do a hundred times before to all types of people. I've even met women there who have spoken to me, been quite happy and talkative, what-have-you, even flirty, and then either said to me "some weird creepy guy <one of my friends> was trying to talk to me in the jacuzzi", or they might give me an "oh my god" look if one of them says hello to her. Body language, facial expression, how they talk all changes when they address them... I feel my skin crawl when i come across someone like that.

I only say this because i think that if we all try to be nicer and kinder to everyone, to be happy and interested in people, we can not only solve the issues raised by the video and in your comment, but also the ones raised in my comment, the ones not even mentioned here, like racism, facism and homophobia.

I think we need feminism, masculism, the LGBT, NAACP and god knows what else to all come together and realise that everyone is tackling the same problem which simply manifests itself in different proportions to different peoples - we're all here for one single life-time, so if we spend it being nicer and friendlier and more courteous and generous we can make life much more enjoyable all round, and no one will have to worry about cat-calling, bitchiness, homophobia or racism.

because they're inundated with dudes calling them sexy as if they are a sex object. being able to differentiate between you saying someone is sexy but also meaning they're a rad human and you saying someone is sexy but just meaning you wanna fuck them is pretty much impossible if they don't know you. generally speaking calling someone sexy should be reserved until after you've established that you're not a dickhead.

Ok, i think i'll take your advice this time round I've not even read his reply so i think i'll not even bother.

At the moment, i'm sceptical that he's even got that qualification if that's what he's said. Even in a basket weaving subject, i'd expect a better ability to reason and identify bad sources from good. Sadly, because of subjects like that, we have a lot of highly qualified idiots who have been encouraged to speak their mind like experts.

I think your efforts are commendable, but doomed to fail. Trance is not interested in learning, and when you teach him something he can't find a crazed, wrong link to discount your knowledge with, he'll simply ignore it and move on to more and more infantile argument. He recently became my second ignore.
I am glad you called him out on his doctorate in underwater basket weaving, unfortunately for us all it does not help him understand science in the least, or the scientific method, but somehow convinces him that it does.
EDIT: Oh, "doctorate in Social 'science'", which he must mistakenly believe is a true science and not a misnomer.
I see he continues with his intentional miss-reading and/or miss-quoting, claiming you said purely consensus is the ONLY way science progresses, not that it's the way that progression is accepted by the scientific community. Me thinks this miss-understanding is an intentional miss-statement in order to continue his 'debate' by constantly changing either his own, or your stance on the subject.
I also noted the passive aggressive (and terrible English) statement " the manner in which I posted the links may not have been "fair," ", to me implying you just couldn't assimilate that much information, not conceding that it was all an attempt at an overwhelming avalanche of BS propaganda.
Kudos on your reasoned, patient approach. I ran out of patience with the kindergarten argument style and quit him.

What a 'real image' from a concave mirror can do is demoed

I was a bit disappointed with the second trick and the reaction to the second trick. "Hey, you see how light reflects from the mirror to where things are? Look, i can use this torch to make light reflect from the mirror to where things are!"

Misconceptions About the Universe - Veritasium

dannym3141 says...

It is simplified.

Some of the concepts are actually pretty hard to put into words and just are how they are. And for each cosmologist you speak to you will encounter a different opinion of the standard cosmological model or parts of its construction.

There are parts of it i don't like because i can't follow and feel comfortable with each step. The maths makes sense, but there's nothing logical and connected in my understanding. At first i didn't like that, but then i realised that we all accept quantum mechanics where charged particles accelerate without radiating, and "instantaneously" move between distinct energy levels.......

In other words, every physical law we've got is just our primitive way of understanding the signals sent from our senses to our brain. Things seem to make sense to us the more experience we have with it happening. We don't understand why matter moves towards other matter via "gravity" - a word which we accept and go 'ahhh gravity - i understand now' but why the hell should it and/or why should it exist in the first place merely to move towards one another?!

So gravity attracts things (why?!) and time only runs in one direction (why!?) and energy is quantized according to the planck constant (WHY!?) and ... the universe is more or less like it's shown in the video! But why why why!? Well, that's a question for a philosopher.

The REAL Reason You're Circumcised

dannym3141 says...

Circumcision of a person without consent and without immediate medical reason should be made illegal. It's unbelievable in this day and age that it occurs and is seemed as normal, and yet people scream foul play over female circumcision.

Barbaric practice, needs to go. We don't accept unnecessary female circumcision, there is no reason to accept male. It offers significant drawbacks and no benefits to a healthy baby born into a western civilised country.

If you're likely to live and have sex with members of a population in which HIV is rife, i could see it being used to save a couple of lives out of every few hundred thousand. However if you live in a country where HIV is uncommon, circumcision is not any kind of protection - the child is not going to grow up using circumcision as a defence against STDs especially when trivial solutions exist that provide 99.999% protection. So you've taken away a wealth of nerve endings in the skin and furthermore deadened the sensitivity of the tip by exposing it to 'rough' surfaces, but there's no benefit.

That "prevention" method (above) only works in the same way as pre-emptive breast removal works. You'd only recommend it to those massively at risk.

Barbaric definitely is the word. And archaic. And the words "improper use of statistics and research to come to a poor conclusion". A bit like the fallacy of autism/immunisation that people bang on about to this very day despite it being bollocks of the highest order. Christ, even if it were true (which it categorically isn't), i'd rather my kid have ASD than die from polio or any of the other countless diseases that literally killed millions before being eradicated through immunisation.

It's to do with angular momentum. The explanation begins with rotational mechanics and ends a few months later so i'll leave you to it from there

hyperphysics is a fantastic resource for any level of physics.

There must be a formula for this, that calculates downward pressure (weight I guess) depending on rate of rotation, mass, length of lever and circumference of the spinning object?

DISTORTIONS (vsauce)

dannym3141 says...

To be fair, there are a few good reasons as to why you can make a good case for it being a universal speed limit - time dilation from light's perspective effectively makes travel time over any distance instantaneous so at the speed of light you can travel any distance instantly, making it effectively infinitely fast. Any faster and you could "arrive before you got there." Mass energy relation indicates you'd need an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed. Loads more.

I'd love it all to be wrong though.

Quantum Computing Explained

dannym3141 says...

This is no good explanation at all. The only explanation about quantum computing that he gives is that we can have bits that are in a) multiple states at the same time and b) more than just two states. I accept that some people didn't know that so it might be new information, but it doesn't tell us anything about how quantum computing works.

It explains the quantum, but doesn't even begin to explain the computing.

Lawrence O'Donnell - What Constitution says about treason

If a german soldier had stood against the system in WW2, we'd have called that soldier a hero.

Today, we call people like that "traitors" by media (read: government) appointment.

Everything with power in the world these days is utterly corrupt. We need a people power revolution.

Hi, don't know if you're satisfied about this video yet but;

If you accept purely gravitational motion, then the kinetic energy gained from lowering any individual card segment must be paid back in full when you raise it back up on the other side. Now factor in resistances (the pen cartridge axle, air resistance, and it's making noise which is a form of energy) and you quickly realise that for the whole thing to spin there must be an external application of energy.

Even consider how accurately he would have had to cut all those cardboard pieces to make them the exact same weight so that heavier ones didn't cause the contraption to slow. I can attest that i've made these types of things as a kid, as soon as you start building one you start to feel why it can't work; you can kinda feel the principle of conservation of energy yourself.

I have references if you need

Comments on YouTube claim that this is somehow fake - that there is a fan somehow blowing on it.

I see no fan in the one direction they show and his body blocks it from any wind on the other side while he is filming so..

Any takers...?

How to open a can without a can opener

dannym3141 says...

>> ^wraith:

Aha. That is the guy who has sanded off all the curbstones in our neighbourhood. Gotcha.
1. Great idea (if you don't mind the fine metal dust in your food).
2. He says he opens his lunch that way?
3. His eats canned stuff for lunch?

Spose it depends where and when you work, or what you work as. And if you have a can opener or not

Hey deano, this is probably my favourite channel. I've never even had a favourite channel before, because they never provided me with what i wanted.

So is it specifically for demonstrations of skill? As in, a video of the mona lisa is not skillful, but someone drawing the mona lisa, that's being skillful. But also, couldn't certain music videos be included then? Break dancing, body popping? Does it have to be practical skill? Could mental skill be involved? A game of chess, or perhaps Richard Feynmann videos? Oratory skill perhaps? What about world records and stuff?

Or is it like an overall feeling - if you feel like wow, they just did something incredible then it's skillful? But then i'd still need to know where you stand on mental skill.

Sorry to pepper you with questions, but it's the first time a channel has held any interest for me.
