Crocodile Hunter's (2nd) most dangerous encounter

The Amazing Cataglyphis Ant

The Amazing Cataglyphis Ant

I saw a Steve Irwin documentary that included these ants. The reason the heat isn't as bad for them is because their legs lift them high off the surface and because they are not touching the sand with all of their legs at once. Just some random information.

My kids begged me to stay up last night to watch the memorial. It broke my heart. They cried so. I didn't realise they liked him so much. Guess a lot of kids did. There were many children there dressed in khaki with tears flowing down their cheeks.

That says alot about Steve Irwin.

The whole situation seems so Australian. I never heard a good word about Steve Irwin from an Australian before he died. "A joke", "an embarrassment" "an idiot" were the terms used to describe him. Now the holy trinity has been expanded to a quadrilateral.

I do think this should stay for the reasons already mentioned. There is a distinct qualitative difference between something like this and "Watch Man Eaten By Alligator!" or the eventual "Watch Steve Irwin Get Stung!"

Earlier this year, there was a similar controversy about a haunting documentary called "The Bridge" which is based, in part, on a New Yorker article about people who commit suicide from the Golden Gate bridge. I considered posting the trailer on VS, but it is a very blurry line between understanding the pain that motivates such an act and exploiting the images of the suicides themselves.

Yeah, the format of the bit is short clips of various people and since a bunch of people here are super interested in seeing Steve Irwin footage I thought I'd let you guys know that he was on here and what time.

Didn't mean to make it look like a bunch of Steve Irwin clips.

I see, but I'm still not sure if his choice of approach was a sagacious one. Getting up close and personal is one thing, doing it in a dangerous manner and taking risks (ie. upsetting the animal) is another.

My fear is that this: Now that Irwin is dead he has attained a certian god-hood. Kids want to imitate people they admire and love. One might try to agitate a wild animal to "be like Steve Irwin" and get hurt.

I think Jeff Corwin's approach is ideal...but he's too tame for the viral video generation. People like the Jerry Springer-style because it shocks them. Irwin was the Jerry Springer of the animal world.

To be fair it does feature Steve Irwin, in the same way that Superman featured Marlon Brando: Briefly.

It gets my vote because it's funny, with or without the unfortunate antipodean zoologist.
