There's a reason that people have been trying to find a replacement for chain drive since the earliest days of bicycles, people: chains suck. This is the most promising replacement I've seen yet. There's an internal-geared 8 speed version that looks pretty nice for a commuter bike:

wasn't a hotel room. i'm fairly certain it was his apartment in soho. He wasn't alone -- his maid was there when the masseuse arrived.
