Hurt Locker Takes Flack from Iraq Vets Amid Critical Praise

cybrbeast says...

I really did not like this movie. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief. I'm not an army guy but this movie was clearly ridiculous.

*spoilers*
First, them casually walking up to the bombs, they have those robots for a reason. But this is far from the worst.
They meet a special forces team and come under attack from an enemy sniper, presumably using a low tech sniper gun. The special ops fire back with a Barret 50 cal and miss. Then the special ops guy is killed by the enemy sniper. Now the guy from the EOD takes over the sniper rifle and sits in exactly the same place. He can't fire because there's blood on his bullets so he casually waits there (in the sight of the enemy sniper) till the bullets are cleaned. He misses a few shots and then finally gets the sniper. Then suddenly his skills increase tenfold because he hits a running Iraqi in one shot. EOD are not snipers!
Then there is the part in the city to a bomb site, and then run into a random city block looking for the bombers. And then they split up. WTF?
I'm sure there was more crap that I can't think of at the moment.

The movie tries to convey this gritty realism but then fails big time. I really can't understand all the praise it gets.

Very valid points as to why they may want to keep the electronics off the gun itself. But both the weather device and the targeting computer are run by the second man.>> ^Drax:

I'm sorry, you have a weather device, the output of which you manually input into the targeting device? This is evidence of the wastefulness of the military industrial complex. Take the weather device, stick it on the targeting device. There, I just saved you 2 very important minutes.

At a guess part of the reason for this is the gun's recoil could damage the sensitive equipment, plus the gun could at times be camouflaged under some form of light cover and not in a good position (to low) to take an accurate wind reading.

The main reason I do not play FPS on PC.
Hacking, and Glitching ruins the game. Because of it legit players who just happen to have a useless talent for the game get accused of hacking.

Maybe the lack of dedicated servers has something to do with it. In most pc fps games, cheaters and hackers get detected and banned, exploits are patched, and having favorite server list makes cheating a non-issue. And I doubt you were ever good enough to get confused for a cheater everywhere you go, since if you're that good, why are you wasting your time on random pub matches in the first place.

I'm not very good either, so being confused for a cheater is never a problem for me. I have a few friends who are that good though, but for them, being confused for a cheater is a non issue because these players play competitive league matches and spend their time on clan servers most of the time anyways.

For me, cheating on pc games have never been bothersome because programs like punkbuster and VAC keep away the casual cheaters, and it doesn't take long to develop a list of servers which are friendly, reliable, and good at banning cheaters.

I never said I was good. Other than that I agree with your statement.

The gun is a TAC50, but at about 0:40 you can see him using the same device for windage (and a rangefinder and micro-adjustments to the scope within the video)...

..this is ArmA 2 with the ACE 2 mod. A game where you can actually make good use of a sniper rifle.

^Man, half the time he's not aiming anywhere close to the guy, and he one-shot-kills him? Glad I never played this game.

he is in fact aiming at them, its just that when your using a sniper rifle on mw2 you have no reticule. so it becomes a matter of mentally memorizing where it would be in the center of your screen. I've seen alot of hackers in that game, no doubt. This however, is not one of them.
oh it does also take a fair amount of luck no scoping a sniper rifle. what? you think he would put in kill shots where he lost? comon its his video

Not saying he's hacking, they just have auto-aim/really loose hitboxes. When he scopes in, he's literally aiming half a bodylength away from the guy.

In MW2, the sniper possibly only has an edge on the consoles because of the 1 hit kill factor. As you can see from the video he frequently misses, more than enough time for a pc player to line up his sights and kill you. Anything you can see and shoot at using a sniper rifle, you can see and shoot at with another gun (except for pistols).

Reload time + time to line up reticle during sway = death. I use the barrett in-game for fun, have the fall camo on it (250+ headshots) - but when I want a higher K:D I go for the other guns.

The Hurt Locker - Sniper Fight!

sepatown says...

just before this clip, Ralph Fiennes' character gets shot right near the sniper rifle. it doesn't make any sense that a soldier would crawl up there when he knows the opposing sniper has his sights trained right on that spot. it also doesn't make sense that when he does crawl up there, he isn't killed immediately. what the fuck was the other sniper doing? it nearly ruins the whole film for me.

can someone point out some of the hacks and the times of them

You're not really meant to be carrying around 50 caliber sniper rifles and using them as from-the-hip assault rifles, and those weapons don't perform that way. Toward the end for sure, he's using various snipers and their rate of fire is obviously enhanced. Look for the distinctive hammerhead at the front of the barrel and the folded up bipod, you can see it pretty easily. You can also tell from the exaggerated recoil of each shot. To the victims watching their killcam, this would have been maddeningly obvious.

Wow, Rachel really shot herself in the foot there at the end. You can't rant about how totally useless a piece of equipment is then be all afraid of how it might be used against us... that's a Republican tactic. Bad, Rachel, bad.

actually not really.
this would be a useful tool if the U.S. picked a fight with a country that had a chance to fight on equal ground.
these things were made to win the modern fighters.. unfortunately they never get the chance unless the U.S. either attacks or sells them to a first world country to use against another first world country.

much like a sniper rifle is a fine weapon, but if you're hunting for mice in your house it's useless.. use mouse traps and poisoned cheese instead.
