Indiana State Fair stage collapses during storm, 4 dead.

shagen454 says...

Same thing happened at a Flaming Lips recently but no on died but caused a lot of damage to gear... I don't know maybe these contraptions should be built to withstand severe weather or not go up at all?

Indiana State Fair stage collapses during storm, 4 dead.

"Capt. Brad Weaver, commander of special operations for the Indiana State Police, said he took the stage at 8:45 p.m. to warn the audience of severe weather.

Ten minutes later, the wind gust blew through."

"Talking Tornado Sirens" - Seek Shelter Now

peggedbea says...

oh, i've also noticed that the sirens haven't used the word "tornado" for a while.
they're now saying "severe weather warning". i wonder if that's because tornado season hasn't really hit yet or if they made the decision to change the words.

'Fire Dave Letterman' Rally Draws Tens of People

kceaton1 says...

There are two wars, serious issues in Iran currently, the economy is in the crapper depending which company you work for, North Korea is apparently trying to see if Japan and the U.S. can shoot down medium range missiles or rather create fire works that could lead to a confrontation, lots of severe weather recently across the U.S., the Republican Party will soon be ordering massive amounts of Lithium for their' Senators, Congressmen, and the party's supporters; Rush already has his stuff - it's not Lithium though; and the LA Lakers won the NBA Championship...

Yet, Republicans are worried about some joke, that they never even saw; *but they did get the email from their cousin Jeremy who had talked a week ago to an old friend from college that was in the "young republicans student organization" with him, and his friend told him that the GOP fundraising committee in Florida had sent out an email to contributors (he's one) that linked them to Rush Limbaugh's page which then showed him the current liberal attack and he started spreading it to his contact list; he also made sure that every single person in his list forwarded it to everyone in their contact list (He also wrote up a small summary so nobody had to go look up the information which is hard to do with computers in their current form. Hell, if you leave MSN or Excite you always go to a German scat site with midget porn, or a page talking about Obama's and Clinton's accomplishments.) . SO, let it be known, David Letterman rapes people with his mouth.

Let's Talk Global Warming (Nature Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

Ohh GoogleFu!

On CATO Insitute:

The Institute's work on global warming has been a particular source of controversy. The Institute has held a number of briefings on global warming with global warming skeptics as panelists. In December 2003, panelists included Patrick Michaels, Robert Balling and John Christy. Balling and Christy have since made statements indicating that global warming is, in fact, related at least some degree to anthropogenic activity:

No known mechanism can stop global warming in the near term. International agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, would have no detectable effect on average temperature within any reasonable policy time frame (i.e., 50 years or so), even with full compliance.

In response to the World Watch Report in May 2003 that linked climate change and severe weather events, Jerry Taylor said:

It's false. There is absolutely no evidence that extreme weather events are on the increase. None. The argument that more and more dollar damages accrue is a reflection of the greater amount of wealth we've created."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cato_Institute#On_environmental_policy

On Kyoto's CBA:
"Economists have been trying to analyze the overall net benefit of Kyoto Protocol through cost-benefit analysis. There is disagreement due to large uncertainties in economic variables. Some of the estimates indicate either that observing the Kyoto Protocol is more expensive than not observing the Kyoto Protocol or that the Kyoto Protocol has a marginal net benefit which exceeds the cost of simply adjusting to global warming.[citation needed] However, a study in Nature found that "accounting only for local external costs, together with production costs, to identify energy strategies, compliance with the Kyoto Protocol would imply lower, not higher, overall costs."

The recent Copenhagen consensus project found that the Kyoto Protocol would slow down the process of global warming, but have a superficial overall benefit. Defenders of the Kyoto Protocol argue, however, that while the initial greenhouse gas cuts may have little effect, they set the political precedent for bigger (and more effective) cuts in the future. They also advocate commitment to the precautionary principle. Critics point out that additional higher curbs on carbon emission are likely to cause significantly higher increase in cost, making such defense moot. Moreover, the precautionary principle could apply to any political, social, economic or environmental consequence, which might have equally devastating effect in terms of poverty and environment, making the precautionary argument irrelevant. The Stern Review (a UK government sponsored report into the economic impacts of climate change) concluded that one percent of global GDP is required to be invested in order to mitigate the effects of climate change, and that failure to do so could risk a recession worth up to twenty percent of global GDP."

Curbing climate change is going to incur costs, however production costs increasing is a short term goal that is recoverable over the longer term. Our planet and climate is not recoverable if the extremes are met.

I mean the argument is like saying there is no point to quit smoking or even say you are planning to quit smoking because the cots of me being more nervous and edgy is too much.

Kyoto represents political commitment, something that we can hold governments to and build on to more issues. Saying its going to incur costs is a moot point. Of course it will cost, what do you expect? You can have something for nothing. But yeah I would pay more to have a normal weather system.

F-5 Tornado in Canada

atara says...

I remember that storm; we live in Winnipeg. They just revised the damage estimates from it to $4million (astonishing for how small of a populated area it affected), and declared it the very first confirmed F5 tornado in Canada.

It's also because of this storm that they're finally getting moving on an emergency notification system for severe weather. I grew up in Tornado Alley, so finding out that Winnipeg has no tornado sirens is a bit of a psychological blow for me.

Also, it looks (and sounds!) like the people who took the video are members of the Hutterite colony right by Elie, which is why it sounds like they're speaking German - they are! (Low/Old German, anyway).

The Red Tent - Intro

Farhad2000 says...

Disclosure : I ripped and uploaded this small scene from the start of the film. Because me, and my pet rock only seem to know about it.

This is a severely underrated cinema classic.

Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. Among his most famous and most important films are his four final features: Letyat zhuravli (The Cranes Are Flying, 1957); Neotpravlennoye pismo (The Unsent Letter, 1959); Ya Kuba (I Am Cuba, 1964); and Krasnaya palatka (The Red Tent, 1969). These are marked by very long, complex takes filled with startling, often surreal images and among the most virtuosic camerawork of that or any other era.

I can't recommend this movie enough - a mixture of real life drama with philosophical lessons about leadership, guilt and moving on. It is based on the story of Umberto Nobile, on May 23, 1928, Nobile set out to land on the North Pole. Severe weather and problems forced delays, during such an attempt, Nobile's airship crashed with it's crew on the ice on May 25th, close to 81° 14' latitude north, 28° 14' longitude east.

The crew managed to salvage several items from the crashed airship, including food, a radio transmitter and, famously, a red tent. The drifting sea ice later took the survivors towards Foyn and Broch islands. Incompetence on the part of Captain Romagna meant that the survivors' distress signals were not picked up for several weeks, and despite the presence of Italian ski-troops on board in case of just such an emergency, no effort was made by the Italian authorities to mount a search, let alone a rescue effort.

The film stars Peter Finch, Sean Connery, Claudia Cardinale and Hardy Krüger. The soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone.
