Buena Vista Social Club - Chan Chan (Havana, Cuba)

Farhad2000 says...

I love this song and video, especially the footage from Havana. Enjoy!

The Buena Vista Social Club was the name of a members-only music club in Havana, Cuba that was at its height during the 1940s. In the late 1990s Wim Wenders made a movie upon the initiative of Ry Cooder called Buena Vista Social Club about some of the musicians who had performed there and their involvement in the production of an album released in 1997 also called Buena Vista Social Club. Both movie and album were highly successful, and started a craze for Cuban music in the United States and Europe. A number of subsequent albums featuring the same musicians have been released, with the title "Buena Vista Social Club" being used as something like a brand to link them.

* Juan de Marcos González
* Ibrahim Ferrer
* Rubén González
* Compay Segundo
* Ry Cooder
* Pío Leyva
* Manuel "Puntillita" Licea
* Orlando "Cachaito" López
* Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal
* Eliades Ochoa
* Omara Portuondo
* Barbarito Torres
* Amadito Valdés
* Joachim Cooder
* Nick Gold - Producer for World Circuit

Siboney by Ernesto Lecuona: Cuban Masterpieces (piano)

rickegee says...

Still struggling for that vote.

A good Ruben Gonzalez story:

Gonzalez had thought he had retired in 1996, when US guitarist Ry Cooder asked him to join in the Buena Vista Social Club recordings. Despite suffering from arthritis and being too poor to own a piano at the time, he was said to be overjoyed, and every morning waited outside the studio before it opened. The pianist so impressed Cooder and co-producer Nick Gold that he was persuaded to record the solo album Introducing Ruben Gonzalez.

Guitar Duel from Crossroads

sfjocko says...

Yesterday I submitted Dueling Banjos, and now I'm following up with dueling guitars.

This is from "Crossroads", based on an updated version of the old Robert Johnson legend -- here, the devil's guitarist is Steve Vai, while Ralph Maccio plays to defend his mentor (and it's really Ry Cooder's playing).

Hannes Coetzee playing slide guitar with teaspoon.

I came across this video a while back- from memory I recall that the guitarist is an "aloe tapper"- he taps the large aloe plants for their juice- you can see the plants behind him. The site claimed that Coetzee is the only known guitarist known to use this technique. I tell you, I'd buy this on CD in a heartbeat. Maybe we can send Ry Cooder down to South Africa to get Coetzee and some of his buddies to cut an album! It worked for cuban music!
