22 basic logical fallacies (ie. what are logical fallacies?)

jwray says...

I taught logic for a couple of years at a university. His idea of rhetorical tautology should be called "circular reasoning" to distinguish it from the useful concept of a tautology in formal logic. Any boolean identity is a tautology. Those are very useful and not fallacious. Those include modus ponens, hypothetical syllogism, DeMorgan's laws, distributive laws, and much more. Every semester some students didn't have enough life experience to reinvent DeMorgan's, and they wrote blatantly wrong things like not(A or B) = (not A) or (not B).

I have the opinion that logic should be drilled into all children in elementary school, because without some understanding of it they can't be relied on to form valid opinions about anything else. They should be rescued with logic before they enter a rut. Boolean algebra and quantifiers should be taught before high school, alongside formal geometry.

How to pay for anything with blank paper

westy says...

its a mixture of stratagies. first of all you have to get sumone into a fame of mind thay are not notmaly in. this is realy easy if you are doing it to sumone who is doing a tedouse job. as thay are normaly set in a stedy mental frequency when you brake that frequency there is the opertunity to imput new data into the brain and it will bypass manny of the brains checks. he uses a fairly complex stroy to get the shop ceapers mind out of its useual rut thinking about directoins is quite a complex activity. then he hands over the fake mony but reasuers the shop keeper that its ok. the shop keepers mind is not doing the checks it would be normaly and so compleaty misses that its fake mony.

allso to pull this off you have to be realy well traind at controling how you say words interms of the speed you deliver them and the tone of voice. aditoinaly you need to lern how to structure words that sound like other words into sentences. this all works becuse the subconchouse brain takes in pritty mutch all informatoin and only sifts variouse parts of it to the conchouse.

Yeps, fun and ever energizing to observe the responses and interaction in a community of more than one.
Here's my personal modus-opers checklist:

!. Energizing Mantra-A healhty, re-affirmation, to remind the ol' ego, that he's yer punk-ass bitch, and not yer command center-
"Everything I know is wrong", or somethin' like that, a good start like toast and Marmite....say this 100 times before you brush yer teeth in the morning. Get s' one ready for the real.

2. Wonder as you did at the world as a tot, while spending 3 hours watching bees, or learning the rule for silent letters, or hearing new music, etc., at EVERTHING you encounter during the day. Not like some Californian flakeazoid, but with the process youv'e developed, beyond the rut youv'e allowed yourself to sink into, you pathetic piece of human garbage...

3. Learn something new everyday, that is practical!! Not some trivial pursuit soundbite, but a practical skill, device, or talent, which you can pass on to someone else....like a garnet stitch, or how to make an improvized incidn, inceedn, incidenary device. This shows yourself, and your fellow man, that you are a healthy, well-rounded actualized induvidual, and not some chump government employee, or worse, doctor lawyer or banker......

Cheers to self-exploration, "The mind, is aterrible thing, to waisssssss!"

i have gone to maountain bike trails before, and they are massive rutted mud pits in perfectly good forest, and im suprized, that even how popular this place is, it still manages to be somewhat nice to the forest, it jumps over the bushes, not through them!

CNN: Some Christians Preparing for Apocalypse

This isn't new. Evangelical Christians have seen "signs" of rapture at any moment for over a hundred years.
But the reason they're stuck in the rapture rut, is because of dispensational theology becoming doctrine in Evangelical Christianity.
According to this "doctrine" if-you-will, the "rapture" is the last thing to happen. It also explains their prophetic sensitivity of the middle east.

The sad thing I believe about these folks, is that most of them don't even know what dispensationalism means, they've just listened to their pastors, read their Left Behind series and watched Fox news for signs of the Rapture.

Ok, off my soapbox.. I'll go back to posting Shatner, dog tricks and commercials.
