Tampopo (1985) - The Ramen Master

Tampopo (1985) - The Ramen Master

kagenin says...

Tampopo is one of my favorite Japanese films too. Legacy, you need to see the whole movie to appreciate the scene. Its supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek.

As a side note, the best places I know for Ramen are in San Francisco's Nihon-Machi (Japantown). Iroha is pretty good, but the best joint I know is just up the street. I think its called Tan Popo. Really wide selection of Ramen bowls, great prices, and cold Japanese beer on tap. It doesn't get much better than that. *sigh*

Cars nostalgia (Wheels Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

My first car was a 1993 Saturn SL1, which I loved dearly...right up 'till I totaled it in a snowstorm.

Then I moved on up *cough* to a 1989 Ford Escort Wagon. No air conditioning, no power anything, and a wonderful AM/FM radio. Went well with the ramen noodles I was subsisting on at the time, too.

Eventually I managed to talk my dad into letting me have his 1991 Integra in 1998, rather than trade it in for the peanuts they were offering him at dealerships. I only just got rid of that car last year. It was quite the warhorse -- sold it with 180,000 miles, and though it did have quite a few serious repairs around 120,000 miles, it was still running fine.

Transplanting the Human Head

RhesusMonk says...

I think issues here are being conflated. Culture is an outgrowth of the process of chemical evolution; it cannot be considered alongside it. All cultures are systems of behaviors resulting from the nature of chemicals. Culture as it stands is a solution--developed by trial and error--to a problem. The problem WE have comes from the coexistence of two conflicting facts: 1) humans must in be the same places for extended periods of time in order to procreate at the maximum sustainable rate (we are an altricial species who invest much in offspring); and 2) humans have developed a subsistence strategy to maintain survival to a reproductive age that requires management of limited resources. Getting to the point, our brains/minds spend more and more time on aesthetic pursuits because we've come to a point where the products of these pursuits benefit the cohesion of societies, keeping us sanely together, sharing resources, making babies and not killing each other at rates that would destroy the genes our bodies so dutifully protect. The best use for the brain, I think we all agree, is to uncover the hidden keys each brain holds to unlock the answer of how to keep us all alive, making babies, for ever and ever, RAmen.

Well apparently eating apples isn't the popular thing to do.

"Withdrawing from cyberspace" is why I downvoted. I thought that in order to post comments on the internet at all, you have to be a pasty faced hermit. And you can NEVER eat something as healthy as an apple! Try Top Ramen and Jolt.

Our pasta, who art in a colander, draining be your noodles. Thy noodle come, Thy sauce be yum, on top some grated Parmesan. Give us this day our garlic bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trample on our lawns. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us some pizza, for thine is the meatball, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever. RAmen.

I really appreciate the compliments.

And yes, I have. My very first concert was when they played at the Ogden Theater in Denver, Colorado. That was back in 1995-96ish, and The Suicide Machines opened for them. I then saw them again a few years later when they opened for Bad Religion in the DU Arena in Denver.

The Ogden Theater was really cool because the place was just so small. And this was back in the day when they had the skeletal masked guy touring with them, and during their encore, he'd breathe fire across the stage, and the whole place would just go nuts. In a tiny, ridiculously hot room like that, the whole experience was just unreal. Definitely one of my best concert experiences to say the least.

How about you?

I give you props for writing something that long without spelling errors or unintelligent dribble. You belong here on videosift. And your totally right their more recent albums, they lost their upbeat bounce that they had going.
Ever been to one of their shows?

I've been a fan of Less Than Jake since I was in elementary school (not exaggerating, I'm 21 now).

Less Than Jake's sound comes from their magical ability to bring the crazy energy that you'd get from going to a ska/punk concert, and somehow expressing it to perfection on a studio album. A good example of this would be their album "Hello Rockview!".

The band's drummer, Vinnie, is also rather well known for being the co-founder of what is probably today's biggest pop-rock label, Fueled By Ramen (FBR) Records, who has signed and made such bands as Panic! At the Disco, Paramore, and FallOut Boy. After the label obviously became more about 'Style over Substance', and less focused on the music, Vinnie dropped out of it and went his own way, creating a new record label, of which he is now re-releasing all of Less Than Jake's old albums on.

This song is on their second most recent album (if you exclude their b-sides album that released afterwards), "Anthem". It pains me to say that the album following Anthem, and their most recent, "In With the Out Crowd" is a horrible abomination of everything that Less Than Jake is. It's so bad, that even Vinnie (The drummer) has spoken out saying that the album just 'didn't work'. It lacked the energy that was so excellently portrayed in the earlier efforts of the band, and came out flat, with a very cliche 'radio-pop rock', unoriginal sound.

They're currently in studios working on their new album, promising the great things that made their band original and unique to begin with.

All in all- outstanding band, with a very personal and unique lyricist in Vinnie, and a very fun, bouncy sound.
