The Russian Rocket

Zifnab says...

Gotta admire Bure's skill and play style. He did everything at full speed, which then led to an early end to his career after some nasty knee injuries. He was definitely the most exciting Canuck ever. The Canucks could sure use a game breaker like him in their current series against the Anaheim Ducks. So in the current playoff spirit *promote!

GO CANUCKS GO!

Every Day is Earth Day

Fedquip says...

er.. I don't know why you wanted to be a part of this collective Choggie? Considering a recycling box is part of the logo... I have always encouraged the appreciation of Nature here.

It's nice to see that you are worked up about this, but I think it doesn't really lead to any progression on the subject. I am far beyond debating whether Global Warming is real or not.

THEN SHOULDN'T THE BULK OF FOCUS BE SHIFTED TO THIS INSANITY, and not how imporrrrrtantit is that we should recycle, buy fuel-efficient cars and re-newable crap, and use bicycles and skateboards to go to work????

Probably, but do you think average Joe Canadian has an ounce of influence when it comes to the oil industry.

I have been watching the hockey playoffs and every 2nd commercial is for an automobile. Yet I have not seen one commercial for a fuel efficient car. I believe we will see progress once we see average Joe Canadian being more environmental and if that means recycling or biking to work then yes it is important.

FUCK FUCK BULLSHIT FUCK (just trying to speak your language)

I am not sure we're you are from or how you were raised, maybe you think the world would be better if we didn't worry about the Environment. I come from Southern Ontario and in my lifetime it seems the air is more polluted (it is). More importantly our forests are covered in garbage and our water is full of crap, crap thats worst then pooh, I'm talking about toxins and garbage and shit like that.

Maybe it takes a scare tactic like "Global Warming" to get people interested in the Environment. Thats fine with me, as long as we don't have to go to war with anybody. I can see through obvious scare tactics, Global Warming is in the same category as the "war on terror".

Awesome Canadian National Anthem: Stanley Cup finals

Zifnab says...

Edmonton didn't make the playoffs this year but this is atmosphere is found at the Arena's of the other Canadian teams in the playoffs.

With the Vancouver Canucks and the Ottawa Senators each holding a 3-1 series lead and hopefully moving on to the second round of the playoffs I thought this deserved a *promote. Hopefully the Calgary Flames can stage a comeback now that they are only down 2-1 in their series. Gotta love the Stanley Cup Playoffs!

GO CANUCKS GO!

Hockey player hit right through the glass! (13 sec)

Zifnab says...

I was actually at this game sitting on the opposite side of the arena in the upper bowl. I saw the hit and then the players seemed to disappear, I was a bit baffled then I saw Linden pulling Norton back off the laps of the fans in the front rows. I couldn't wait to get home after the game to catch the highlights on the late night sports.

If I remember correctly this was during the first round of the 1995 playoffs. Vancouver went on to win the series 4-3.

Kerry Wood Strikes Out Twenty

NordlichReiter says...

I didn't get to play with this guy, but he was on my high school baseball team. I think he graduated a year or two before hand.

I also played football with the former quarterback or OU or the great bob stoops school.

Any way Kerry Wood played at mac Arthur before he went to Grand Prairie. That area of schools produced a lot of good athletes, but alas there is always politics. The thing to do then was to hold your sons back a year so that they would be physically ahead of all the other male children in the district.

So any rumors you may have heard about football or baseball in texas they are probably true. Midland Odessa, Odessa Permian, Abeline Cooper, Collyville Heritage. Those are some of the big named schools that are known for their sports, and their lopsided Jock Mentality. Collyville Heritage was barred from the playoffs because they were caught with about 45% of their athletes using a anabolic steriods. Now the big school is in Irving, the next to largest district in the metroplex.

For me highschool ruined American Sports for me, and that is why i took up martial arts. BUT! I love Hockey! Because they didn't offer that at my School! I think about it now and i wished i would have had a chance to play.

Wayne Gretzky - Legend

silvercord says...

By Kind Permission of Michie's discard:

Identified as a hockey prodigy at a very young age, Gretzky regularly played at a level far above his peers. He became a full professional at the age of 17 in the World Hockey Association, leading to a long career in the NHL. He set 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, 6 All-Star records, won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, and won 9 MVP awards and 10 scoring titles. He is the only player ever to total over 200 points in a season (a feat that he accomplished four times in his career). In addition, he tallied over 100 points a season for 15 NHL seasons, 13 of them consecutively.

Moment of peace in NHL

Oatmeal says...

AARRRggg. I wish I had a friggin gold star so I could *save! This is so great. Its so unexpected, especially if one knows about the rivalry between Buffalo and Ottawa. Throughout their whole playoff series last year, both teams wanted to kill each other and the night of this game, their goalies fought eachother. This is probably the most humourous moment I have ever witnessed in hockey. This better make it out of the queue.

American Football's Hardest Tackles EVER

supersaiyan93 says...

how about the hit Reggie Bush took in the one of the first drives by New Orleans in the N.O./Bears playoff game this past season? I didn't think he would get up after that one. Ran in an 85+ yard carry later in the game though.

American Football's Hardest Tackles EVER

Deano says...

None of this is snuff.

My football knowledge is rusty now but there are a couple of hits that stick in my incomplete memory which should have been in this collection.

A playoff game in the 90s with Buffalo/Miami. Steve Tasker nailed the Miami safety from the side on a special teams play. The guy not only got up but then made a big play, I think an interception.

A regular season game, San Franciso against somebody. Wide receiver John Taylor scored but was walloped in the chest with a helmet. It was one of those hits that took him off his feet and looked really bad and borderline illegal but I don't think they called it.

Classiest National Anthem Ever - Mo Cheeks to the Rescue

silvercord says...

I noticed that the National Anthem was on the Sift again and it reminded me of class act Maurice Cheeks helping out a singer who forgot the lyrics. I think he understands a great truth: there is nobody among us who couldn't be made to look stupid, given the right circumstances. Cheeks wasn't going to allow this young girl to lose her dignity. Go Mo!

Here's a bit more back story:

Former Portland Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks, helps Natalie Gilbert, sing National Anthem before the start of Game 4 of the first round of the playoff against the Dallas Mavericks. The Blazers were down 3 games to none, before this, then tied up the series before losing in game seven

The Zombies - Time of the Season

silvercord says...

This is from Wikipedia:

"Time of the Season" is a song by The Zombies, featured on the 1968 album Odessey and Oracle. The song was written by keyboard player Rod Argent and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in August 1967. Its breakthrough, however, did not occur before 1969, after the band had split up.

The song's characteristics include the unique voice of lead singer Colin Blunstone, the memorable bass riff, and Rod Argent's fast-paced psychedelic improvisation. The lyrics are an archetypical depiction of the emotions surrounding the Summer of Love. It is famous for its call-and-response verses "What's your name? (What's your name?)/Who's your daddy? (Who's your daddy?)/(Is he rich?) Is he rich like me?".

Pop culture occurrences

* The song is the source of the widespread provocative use of the phrase "Who's your daddy?", as popularized in the late 1980's and early 90's by syndicated radio shock jock "The Greaseman".
* This song was played in the background in an episode of The Simpsons, more specifically episode AABF02 ("D'oh-in In the Wind") in which Homer briefly becomes a hippie.

* It featured in one scene of Shanghai Knights.
* It featured in one scene of NBC's miniseries "The '60's" (1999), albeit anachronistically, in a scene dated to late 1965.
* In 2006, C&C used the song in an ad campaign for Bulmers Original Cider.
* In Sprite's 2006 Sublymonal advertising campaign, a chorus of flowers with human faces perform an a capella version of the song's opening.
* During the 2006 playoffs, the New York Mets played it in Shea Stadium as the team took the field.
