Well, "confronted the shooter" is way over-stating what happened. The guy was standing behind a pillar, trying to decide whether to shoot or not as the killer struggled with his jammed gun. He claims the killer saw him. But did he? This young man doesn't seem to be making it up, he seems genuinely distressed by what happened, not posturing. But I don't know. I'd like to hear from someone other than this young man about what happened.

If it did go down as he says, then I applaud him for not going all testosterone and shooting up the place.

It's all just so much political theatre.

Anyways, I'm not foolish enough to defend either data retention or the internet filtering crap. Did internet filtering actually happen? I thought is was just a waste of time.

Not great policy, but hardly what I'd call 'gigantic fuck-ups' or taking Australia 'so far backwards'. I think the NBN is far more substantive policy that will make far more difference to far more lives. But that's just me.

This Government has been bagged pillar to post, but in the end I think it's got a fair record of achievement under incredibly trying times. I think if Abbott had tried to form a minority government it would have lasted five minutes.

You won't get much of an argument from me. If having high productivity and a lean economy means mirroring the US's diminishing middle class - I'll take Australia.

I do worry though. The Australian economy seems to be built on two pillars - resources and government employment. That's not a very diversified basis for country building. Where are the Apples, Nokias and Hondas of Australia?

What you have described anecdotally is a small price to pay for Australia's remarkable economic success - a price any country north of the equator would be happy to pay.
