I found out through two incidents in as many days (back-to-back) which happened while working on a contract job on a state highway outside of Newton, Kansas back in the summer of 2002 of an imprinted and innate capacity to "switch-on" in the most dire of circumstances while others on the crew either went into pre-shock or became completely functionless.

Two accidents. two days inna row during our road closures on a dangerous highway fulla truckers trying to beat tolls on the interstate and take the short cut:...both days, 18-wheelers in cruise control blew thorough the closures and caused major fatalities. I was one of 4 people on the crew to switch into rescue and control-mode, when the rest of the world nutted-up. Had state police thinking I was EMS already on the scene...(in my flagman uniform)....Did not know I had it in me, it simply happened. Exhausted me but I had no post-traumatic inabilities the next days, went back to work after the first accident when a couple of guys burned to death with no jaws of life there to save them...did all i could for the victims and my fellow crewmen after.

Next day, assumed flagman position (after having worked on on the main crew having handed my fagging position over to a greenhorn) and another accident, fully-loaded gravel truck was struck by a another 18-wheeler hauling two butane trucks...commanded the scene and kept a woman form going into shock by taking control...5 fatalities when the truck simply compacted two car-fulls of peeps into the back of a fully-loaded gravel truck in the front of the flag line.

I was one of the only people there with my wits about me-Guess I was there for a reason.

I have been in a lot of accidents i simply walked-away from-God works in mysterious ways with the damnedest of sorts.

My observations as someone who drives pretty much all the time but has spent some time on a bike (all being in the San Francisco bay area in Calif.)
In general people who are incompetent asshole drivers (ones who don't obey the law and drive in a dangerous manner) also tend to be incompetent asshole cyclist. Assholes are assholes regardless of mode of transportation. I also think that when a driver sees a cyclist do something unsafe it makes an impression that they dont forget as conflicts are a rare occurrence (compared to conflict with other automobiles)and tends to stand out in ones mind. However I find that every time i drive across town or down to the local market I see multiple people (in cars) tailgating ,driving to fast, running lights, not using signals, generally being unsafe. Thing is we accept this as being pretty normal so it doesn't make as much of an impression. Just business as usual.
Being on a bike for me makes me hyper aware of my surroundings as I realize one mistake by an automobile can cost me dearly. When driving in my comfortable bubble of an automobile not so much.
Also in MY(exclusive to my personal experience) many years of being on this planet ive not once irl known a cyclist who condemn motorist for driving automobiles. Thinking they are somehow better for riding a bike(its always drivers who say that about cyclists). Most peeps i know that ride bikes do so because they love it and don't give two shits about what you do.

True enough regarding peeps wanting that "feel-good" response continually-Superficial adjustments anchored in emotion are short-lived.
To address ant's question, one's outer world (physical presentation, expression, habits, interests, etc.) manifests as a window into one's inner world -A dishevled appearance reflects internal conflict, chaos. The steps taken to adjust by creating one or several new habits (grooming, healthy diet, etc.), while at the same time discarding deleterious habits (addictions, shit-think, harmful associations), will alter a human forever. The hardest thing for this man to deal with are his routines that brought him to this point of rescue. Adjusting them radically at this stage in the spiral may be the jolt needed.

Definitely, he'd benefit greatly from he support of others who have made similar journeys.
